When I was 14 I had Rush posters all over my room. The walls, the ceiling, my closet. everywhere full of Rush posters, I always wondered who took those photos. How did they get so CLOSE!? Well, I'm 50 now and a professional concert photographer who shoots 75-100 bands a year live. I got to stand 10 feet away from RUSH a couple years ago and photograph them live and in person for the first time. Even though I photograph popular bands all the time, I nearly had a heart attack from sheer joy shooting RUSH. Now I have my own Rush posters hanging in my office that I shot personally. Full Circle. The best part about RUSH is it was always ALL about making great music, not overdone stage sets or dance routines, just the music. They genuinely cared about each other, too. After Neil was devastated by the deaths of his wife and daughter in separate instances, they put the band aside for two years and made sure he had time to recover. They tracked his progress the whole time then eagerly welcomed him back. Pretty down to earth people.

There were a lot of great bands in the 70's! I've seen so many in my youth. Zeppelin, Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Pink Floyd, Boston, the Eagles, Skynyrd... I could go on and on but there was one band that I saw live for the first time in 1977 that just blew me away and that was these guys. It was remarkable and I'll never forget it! They were just so different and LOUD! I couldn't hear right for a few days after that concert! These guys and so many other original "arena" bands were the soundtrack to my youth and what a great time it was. I miss those days and think about them all the time. I had friends back then and we'd go to whatever concerts we could afford to go to. I'd work 60 hrs a week just so I could afford tickets to a Stones concert or to take my girlfriend to go see KISS! The last concert I went to was to see the Zack Brown Band in Charlotte, NC and those guys played for two and a half hours in 98 degree blistering heat and humidity and they didn't miss a beat the whole time! The younger generation just doesn't understand and I feel bad for them because they'll never get to experience what we did growing up.

The 'greatest'...really? It is great, but the 'greatest'? Have you (or I or others for that matter) heard all possible 'contenders'? I suspect not, and that is not me being derogatory but rather acknowledging that it is probably an impossibility to have heard ALL alternatives great pieces.. It is also in my view that the 'greatest' is quite a subjective determination so I have come to realize that because I have not heard all possible alternatives AND because my tastes are somewhat eclectic then I am unable to state that one piece in particular is the greatest. All I could reasonably state perhaps is that one particular piece is the greatest that I have heard. For my part there are plenty of great pieces, ranging from some of Neil Young and Crazy Horse's masterful performances (Cortez, Down by the River, Cinammon Girl etc) to Yes (with Starship/Yours is No Disgrace/Wurm) to Humble Pie's I don't need no Doctor and then on to Richard Thompson's nearly 14-min Calvary Cross (my personal favourite). I just enjoy as many of these musical gems as I can before my time is up.

One of the best thing about Rush to me is that they never stopped evolving or trying new things. They never restricted themselves to one sound or style. The words "Rush doesn't do that" weren't in their vocabulary. They dabbled in metal, prog, reggae, new wave, synth rock, and anything else that tickled their fancy, and somehow made all of it sound like Rush. Not everyone liked everything they did, but few other bands had their curiosity or versatility, and because of that, their catalog is one of the most diverse in recorded music.

What I love about Rush is that they did things their way regardless of pressures from record labels, fans, agents or anyone else. That is the way to live your life.

Cream, Hendricks, Rush and The Police, trios are always best. Rhythm guitars, keyboard players, window dressing. 3 people, each fighting for their own corner = the magic for great music.

Rush is the "cool uncle" that everyone has and cant wait to hang out with as a kid. He plays the best music, tosses ya a beer, maybe even a smoke and says "dont tell your mom lol". RIP Neil

Great analogy! I tried to be that uncle with my nephew.., I think I succeeded. We're still close, but he has his own family now, and we don't get to hang out like we used to.

In 1974 RUSH played at our high school and I was hooked. This group gave us so much great music and so many albums and for that I'm thankful! 2112 FOREVER R.I.P Neal Peart.

Neil is so methodical and surgical when playing his drums. You can see how he's so focused during each beat of every song. Absolutely amazing drummer.

What amazed me back in highschool was a guy with a 360 degree drum set. Neil was one of a kind. The rest also great band. Sorry to dwell on Neil I always wanted to play drums and my parents wouldn't let me.

How about Russia's first album when it came out and I still have it to this day November 2024. I saw Rush live at the Omni in Atlanta in 1991 and it's always like God how can 3 guys put out this much beautiful Rock n Roll. Incredible and ZZ top is another band that can always put out incredible sound..

Is Neil even a real human ? His timing and 'exactness' is overwhelming ... my God these guys are great !
@jimiknowsbest50995 жыл бұрын
@Oregon Patriot No OP ... these three musicians will ALWAYS be great... few can say that ... I've seen them perform 20+ times live ... been a fan for 40+ years... and sadly your right about the band hanging up thier spurs ... Neil can no longer play due to his health issues... at least not at the level HE requires of himself... Alex has issues as well...but I would bet my last dollar that they could still out perform 85% of what's out there calling themselves musicians...... Gonna miss these guys and thier great talent.
@jimiknowsbest50995 жыл бұрын
@Oregon Patriot Well put OP ... even seeing them that one time, I can tell you have an ear for music... and what is good... seen them all around the country, every chance I could...1st time seeing them live was 1981.... San Diego.... and there were plenty of drugs....lol. Last time was thier last show in Los Angeles.... man, I'm gonna miss them....but your right, they've left a trail of great albums and videos.... at least we have that..... Rock On my friend ....👍
