This truly is an isolated track. No bleed through of other tracks whatsoever. I should crank this up on my massive sound system and open the windows and have people in the neighborhood thinking 'wow, somebody in this area is one hell of a drummer!'

Amen, brother. It sounded great on the album. And now to hear the isolated track...it's like a whole new level of, "Wow, that snare is UNREAL!" Super production. Of course, I know nothing about the production process, but...man, the entire album is so crisp and clean.

It does sound pretty great, but I think Metallica's self titled album is the gold standard of production for me, and I don't even like that album.

@@Mike-zb7ts I think a lot of the great sound of this record is due to the original SSL mixing desk at Le Studio with it's BIG fat, warm, punchy analog sound going through great outboard gear and onto two synchro'd Studer 24 track analog reel to reel tape machines! You just can't beat the warmth of analog! I love the big reverb on the snare and the dry toms that really punch through the mix and feel "in your face and personal", it just makes his drum sound on this record sound so dynamic and GOOD! They sound the best on this album IMO more than any other.

Yep. Hes said himself that he is such a compositional drummer. Not an improvisational drummer. He tried to do a little improv in his solos but thats just not his forte. I remember in the game of snakes and arrows vid when the producer nick asked him to do all new parts for all the verses of the way the wind blows, neil freaked out and looked nervous and very uncomfortable about it. I realized then that he REALLY was not an improv drummer and was definitely his weak side. His only weak side. Some guys like carter beauford from dave matthews band is a seriously excellent drummer, to me about as good as neil, but he is the opposite of neil. He is very much an improv guy and not so much about writing very specific parts that he always plays the same. He changes their parts of songs a decent amount almost show to show. My 2 favorite drummers, carter and neil.

This is what every drummer in the 80s tried to play perfectly and the other drummers would be jealous if you could learnto play it the right way all the way through. I didn't. Keepingit real. But I was good. And kept the main verse best but organizedthe chorus to fit me.. I joined drum Corp and worked on my hands to do diddles and paradiddles with great speed and efficiency but I was too A.D.D to learn drum charts so My influences of Rich. Peart, and Bonham mashed together and created my own style. I can't sit in the pocket all night. That's just giving the guitar all the power. FTHAT. He's gunna have to keep up.

Ok, I'm a guitar player , so please excuse anything that sounds like a dumb question here, but I've heard Neil say that this song was difficult for him to play. What makes this do difficult ( and I mean on his level), I've heard other stuff he's done that sounds more difficult to me at least. Either way, he's one of my favorite drummers.
@spite12962 жыл бұрын
Late comment, but as a drummer myself, I'd say a good portion of what makes this song so difficult is the endurance that it calls for. Constant speedy 16th hihat/ride notes throughout the track while having to nail down fairly complex fills at the same time with pretty much no breaks whatsoever. Not to mention the tricky bass drum quick-double patterns throughout the song, and of course, the odd time signature changes (which aren't too hard if you've got a decent grasp of them). All these factors mixed in make for one hell of a challenge, even if you know the song note for note.
@gnoogie Жыл бұрын
@@spite1296 that crazy polyrhythm shit he starts doing on the ride in the back half is what always mind fucks me. cant imagine how many hours he spent getting to the point where he could do it that cleanly and effortlessly, on top of everything you said. (that shit at around 3:00 idk if its just a cleverly placed rudiment or an actual polyrhythm or what)

His Ludwig kits were overall his best sounding, but the overall production of the drums on Moving Pictures is the best of any Rush albums. Those Superstars remain great sounding kits, but its just a shame none of their other albums got close to this level of iconic production. I think Presto is probably the closest, but was tempered by a thin sounding mix. Deserves a remix imho.

Gus Ganaden nope. Not best ever. Why does Keith moon get credit over Dave Weckl? Moon is probably the reason I play drums and all but come on!!! I love Bonham too, yet my tastes lean more towards Bill Ward, or better yet Michael Giles (who happens to be Peart’s biggest influence). I’m telling you... check out anything recent of Dave Weckl. You won’t know what the heck he’s doing. Most people that can’t even play drums could play this tune. It was one of those rites of passage songs. There has to be over 100 videos of 12 year old girls who cover this. Lastly, Weckl studied under Freddy Gruber. If you haven’t heard of him...then go ask Neil Peart. Neil was his student too.
@Jameskeith19726 жыл бұрын
kickstar1 I have to disagree. He’s important. Has some of the best recordings ever... but that’s owed to the producers and Jimmy Page. He beat the crap out of the Drums.. and was loud. He got most of his chops from growing up on Elvin Jones and Buddy Rich. Otherwise, he’s overrated compared to guys like Jeff Procaro who took Fool in the Rain and turned it into Rosanna. Classic. It’s all a part of a Tradition. It’s the evolution of modern drumming. Music sucks nowadays. Modern drummers are amazing though! I hope that they can breathe some life back into music like they did back during the swing era. No go study!
