I'm a drummer and Neil Peart's been my idol since I started playing drums. They don't call him the "Professor" for nothing. You need to watch a couple of his drum solos to see just how good he was. The best compliment I heard about him is "If he's not your favorite drummer, he's your favorite drummer's favorite drummer." Died of brain cancer in January 2020. A true virtuoso on the drums!

This concert was in 2002. About the washing machines, the band would wash some of the clothes from the audience during the concert. My shirt was washed. I don't know what detergent they used, but that shirt has smelled spring fresh ever since.
@wadesworld62504 жыл бұрын
Sorry to say it, but I'm pretty sure Rush never had washing machines on stage. They had dryers, which is what those machines are. Washing machines would require a water hookup and a drain. Water is seen as a bad thing around so much electrical equipment. It wouldn't be readily available and would be too much trouble to run lines for no value. Oh, and then they'd also have to have dryers too to dry the clothes once washed. Everything I've read says they only used dryers and those dryers were loaded with promotional shirts which were different than the shirts the public could buy,. Geddy and Alex would throw them out to the crowd at the end of the show. That certainly was what I saw at the show I attended during that era. I believe the dryers were run on the no-heat setting or the heating element was disabled for safety. Furthermore, the idea that they had staff collecting shirts from random people in the crowd and then made sure the right shirt got back to the right person doesn't seem at all likely. If you have some documentation showing that Rush actually washed clothes on stage, I'd love to see it.

Your comment that Neil was "at work" was accurate. As the years went by, his desire to endure the grind of touring reduced, plus with their music, he had to work like a dog. Rush plays a 2.5 - 3 hour show, covering 25-28 songs generally. He used to say playing their shows was "like running a marathon while solving mathematical equations". Very physically demanding, very mentally demanding.

Yes! Neil Peart and the band WORK! In fact, their first success in America came in 1974 with the song "Working Man". This was at the time, before Neil joined the band and they still had their old/original drummer (john Rutsey). When the song became famous and the band received an American record deal (with Mercury Records) they came to a cross roads with John Rutsey, as he was ill-prepared to go on a full National tour, due to health reasons. Therefore, the band had a little over 2 weeks to find a new drummer! They held auditions and met Neil Peart and the rest in history!! Neil's first album with the band was the 1975 release "Fly By Night". I highly recommend you two watch another live video from Rush, from their 2011 "Time Machine Tour", of the song "Working Man"!! It is totally amazing! And, this one's got lyrics! So look up Rush live Working Man, Time Machine Tour and let 'er rip!!! Great reaction , ladies! You are very pretty and fun to watch!

People who hate Rush often have little understanding of music. People are free to like what they like and hate what they don't, but the talent of Rush is undeniable. The most oft-cited reason for hating Rush is Geddy Lee's vocals, but the point remains that Geddy Lee was an excellent vocalist. Certainly not among the best in the world, but people FAR too often criticize his vocals for just the octave of his voice without understanding just how skilled he was. Hating Rush would be like hating the work of Michelangelo. One is free to not like his work, but one is a moron if they deny his talent.

YYZ is the airport code for Toronto International Airport, which is where the guitarist Alex Lifeson and bass player Geddy Lee are both from. The late Neil Peart (pronounced peert) is from Port Dalhousie, Ontario. When the boys were on the road for long stretches they were all happy to see the YYZ tags on their luggage because it meant they were heading home. As stated above, the opening/intro is the actual morse code for YYZ.
@TheFingerFrame4 жыл бұрын
The washing machines were a joke by the band. Behind the guitarist, Alex Lifeson, there was always a wall of amplifiers. But Geddy Lee, the bassist, usually went direct into the board with his bass, so there was a big visual “hole” behind him. Geddy decided to have some fun with that and put washers and dryers behind. The band would pull out freshly washed shirts to toss into the crowd at the end. Then it became a running gag: chicken rotisserie’s were my favourite.

More fun facts about this video: This is taken from their "Rush In Rio" DVD at the end of their 2002 Vapor Trails tour. Btw, this was their first tour in 5 years...coming back from a "hiatus" resulting from the tragedies in Neil Peart's life in the late 90's. They had never before played in Rio prior to this show and their fan base there is RABID as demonstrated in this video and throughout the entire concert. I saw this same show in Charlotte in July 2002 but would surely loved to have been there in Rio with that crowd, which is the largest they ever played to (around 60, 000 in Macarena stadium).

Rush did a whole lot of stuff all over the musical spectrum. They have the longer epics like "Xanadu," "2112," and "The Necromancer." They also have the 80s pop songs like "Territories," "Force Ten," and "Subdivisions" (and "Time Stand Still," whose 80s-tacular music video you saw). They also have instrumentals like this, "La Villa Strangiato," and "Leave That Thing Alone." In the 90's and 2000's they started to rock hard, with tunes like "Driven," "Earthshine," and "Ceiling Unlimited." They even rap on "Roll the Bones," to great cringe. Their last album is great. "BU2B," "The Wreckers," "Clockwork Angels," and "The Garden" are great songs. They wore many hats over their career and did a huge variety of stuff, some of which lost them fans along the way, but they were always looking for new sounds, new ways to make music. They never got static, never got comfortable. It's one of the best things about them.
@norwegianblue20174 жыл бұрын
A couple of things. Their last album was a live album called R40. They called it that because they had finished 40 years of music. Next, this live convert happened around the year 2000, not 1981.

Those aren't washing machines, they're dryers. As technology improved, Geddy began routing his bass directly into the arena PA system, rather than through a stack of amps behind him. With no need for the amps anymore, the stage was very unbalanced, because Alex still had his huge stack of amps. So as a joke, Geddy began placing his own large equipment on his side of the stage, starting with a refrigerator, then dryers, vending machines, and later, a chicken rotisserie (with plastic chickens). FYI, most bands these days go straight into the PA system and often the stacks of amps you see on stage are empty/fakes.

Two things (if they haven't been covered already down-thread): (1) the repetitive notes they play at the beginning of the song are played in the rhythm of the Morse-code signal for 'YYZ', and (2) the band eventually went to plugging their instruments directly into PA systems and they stopped using on-stage amps but they then found they had lots of empty space on stage with them without the amps, so they started putting silly stuff on stage with them to fill the space... they've used washing machines, vending machines, rotisserie chicken ovens, etc. etc. on-stage with them over the years.

You are going to be swarmed over with Rush requests. The interruption of your reaction by your little orange buddy gave me a flashback to an incident in my house 16 or 17 years ago. I had a Siamese mix boy named Buddy, who tried to investigate a plastic shopping bag that was left on the floor. He got the handle loop around his neck, instantly when into panic mode, did a couple orbits around the living room then shot down into the basement. I found him hiding in a corner, where I was able to get it off of him. The funniest thing was my other Siamese mix boy got scared by the commotion, and he ended up hiding with Buddy in the same corner. And yes, I did enjoy your reaction and gave a thumbs up.

About the washing machines. The guitarist would have his half of the stage with speakers and amplifiers stacked up. You have about 50,000 people singing along to an instrumental released nearly 20 years before. YYZ is a Canadian airport so it's pronounced why why zed. When Geddy switched to patching directly into the venue's PA system and got rid of the big cabinet speakers that his bass used to feed into, he thought his side of the stage looked empty. He started populating it with various big items... in this case washing machines.
