It's pretty common in the history of warfare. Unlike the average cowardly Umerican who wants to squeeze every minute of life out of their 70's and 80's, a lot of older people of courage have already acknowledged to themselves that they've already lived a full life (maybe even survived a previous war, when they were younger). They wouldn't know of any other place to live, anyway. Kind of analogous to the elderly couple recently in Pacific Palisades who fought the fire for their house, which they already considered their own heaven. It was save the house, or die trying.
