Peter Jackson has said Casting LOTR was super important because he didn't want known actors and big block buster attention being focused on the characters. In doing so it would ruin the whole atmosphere of the film and detract form the characters themselves and not allow the audience to fully believe what we were seeing on screen. So hats off to Russel for picking up the sublet silence PJ gave him as his way of saying a polite no thank you.

Gladiator is one of the best movies. Everything about it, the music, actors, scenery was so right. Hero or villain amazingly performed so well. The fight scenes with the animals was spectacular. No wonder it won so many OSCARS!!! 🏆❤️

It was my understanding that, because of the exquisite level of authenticity, "Master & Commander" was too prohibitively expensive for the studios to make a sequel. It's authenticity was both its genius AND its downfall.

The actual truth of gladiators and how much closer they were to professional wrestlers than duelists to the death (most of the time) is very interesting to get into. The way they were split into different "classes" based on their body type and given specific kinds of gear, and matched up to each other very specific ways. Very RPG like in a way. Plus the fact the best known ones were essentially larger than life celebrities, endorsements, all that stuff.

Russell’s come a long way from Roger mooning people in Grease through roles in numerous movie genres, directing and then taking to the musical stage. Keep it all coming, Russell.

I once had lunch with Russ. Well, he was at the table next to mine in a cafe once. That's my exciting celebrity story. In all seriousness, though, it was pretty cool how little anyone cared. He lives around here, so it's not uncommon to see him around. Everyone in the cafe barely seemed to notice him, he was just there with his family having a nice lunch.

Horrible Histories did a 'Maximus' advertising olive oil. Loved Master and Commander, and the Water Diviner, bloody near cried through so much of that. When the young Turkish widow asked him if he is British, and he says Australian... tears. Nice bit of tidy riding in it too, nice tidy horseman is Russell Crowe.

That's so cool that he was able to read between the lines in his conversation with Peter Jackson and not be pushy. Couldn't have been easy if he was a Tolkien fan. He must really have a lot of respect for the art form. I hope he enjoyed the final vision as much as the rest of us did. 👏👏👏

Met him in New Orleans at his concert for his band. Nice guy, got to hug him. Didn’t get a chance to talk at length with him because of the rest of the people waiting to meet him before the show, but I made him genuinely smile with what I said to him about his music and how I related to his movie Land of Bad (I am retired military and all too familiar with toxic leadership). Everyone else seemed to want to talk about Gladiator and I guess that get’s old after a while. So it seems he appreciated me bringing up something else.
