As a boy in primary school in a small rural school ,the Vietnam War was constantly on the tele,papers etc. some boys from our town were over there...Our teacher Mr Flanagan suggested we write to some of the diggers doing their duty....to our delight as kids several troopers wrote back thanking us for our support....we wrote for many months...and some lads visited our little school after their tours....I have held a lifelong respect for our ADF who with honour serve and protect our nation and values....this is not being jingoistic...but merely a memory from a then 12 yo kid

My grandfather was badly injured fighting in Ypres his brother died six months after being wounded by 7 bullets from a Turkish shell on Gallipoli. Last year I received an email in NZ from the UK asking if I was related to Uncle Wally. A gentleman had picked up a ww1 photo album in an opshop. It had belonged to Uncle Wallys nurse at Walton on Thames. Having been hospitalized many times, nurses have my respect, admiration and love as no other profession or people.

I remember this beautiful song as a 12 year old. My younger brother (as he recently revealed to me) was terrified at the time that I would be called up as part of the television/government conscription lottery/orgy that was part of our lives in 1969. Ronnie Burn's "Smiley" gave a sadder Vietnam war tinge to the classic Australian movie icon. Less commonly known is Matt Taylor's song "Tweetie", about a childhood friend called up to serve, and then die in Vietnam. Matt was the key vocalist in Aussie blues band Chain. As a solo act, and as support act to Jethro Tull, he performed this song at the Sydney Opera House in 1973. His pain was most evident to us in the audience; though his mighty blues voice never wavered and was the most fitting tribute to his lost childhood friend.

A powerful Anti war song from the Vietnam era, from the point of view of one of God's Angels on Earth. There were then, and still today too many Rachels who sit and hold the hands of young men and women dying from war. They become whoever the dying soldier needs them to be at that time, as they comfort them and tell them they are not alone. God Bless you Rachel.

Why does this god of yours allow war, especially wars fought in his own name?
@davidbyrne9506
@davidbyrne9506 2 жыл бұрын
@@Rob-fc9wg The argument is God has given man free will. Evil men will use God's name to do all sorts of evil - wars in the "name of God", pedo priests, American televangelists ripping off the vulnerable. When we see what Put1n and his entourage of vodka guzzling barbarians are doing in Ukraine, they are not worthy of being called humans. In them you can see the deeds of Satan. In nurses like Rachel in this song, there is the work of God.

This was the song my grandad sung to my mum when she was little. She's called Rachel. Unfortunately he died by smoking when she was young. No wonder tears were pouring down her eyes when she found this song. They played this when he died. They kept him that night and all of his children cuddled up with him, playing all the songs of their memories. Now I play this for my mum every fathers day... She says thank you and starts crying. She misses him deeply and she had a really good connection with him. I never met him neither did my dad but I think he would have been a nice man. This song is one of the biggest connections my mum and grandad have. I think this song is very beautiful and I love it.

Some do. Some don't. Politicians and their managers treat us like shit. Our poor wages cost. Some few managers are fantastic. Anyway, have always been and will advocate for patients and families. Have been on several crosses and wanted to give up many times. Regardless, the good people keep us going. Nurses don't eat their own. Budgets chew us up. The job is about comfort for people. No awards, cash or trophies in this job. but some great memories. This song is how it is.

Australian musician, I pray to sing with him one day, when I was a girl I was in love with his spirit and to this day when I need some loving direction as Child Protection Officer; I am able to come to peace then. Thankyou Russel.

must be 40 years since I've heard this, I live in the UK now. I've got tears pouring down my face thinking of when the horror of that awful war was on the tv, in the papers, on the radio, and being protested in the streets of Melbourne - stark and real and black and white.

Thanks for your memories of an extraordinary time - it makes it seem more real for those of us not born in the era. This might be a tough question to answer, but if you had to guess, what do people of your generation think of the Jihad attacks targeting civilians in the UK, Australia, and the rest of the West in recent years, the need for concrete bollards in our cities, terrorist-response units, heavily-armed guards at Christmas markets etc, and the continuing importation of people who believe in the ideology of Jihad against us? I get the sense maybe older people are outraged at the Jihad in a way we don't see in the media, from having lived in a time of more freedom of expression, and more disgust at war generally. Studies here in Australia show the majority of people want this war against us finished via permanent deportations of jihadis & their supporters, and a complete ban on immigration to them, but there are very few protests on the street against the Jihad war. Is it that people are intimidated by the threat of being smeared by the media, in a way that they weren't in the 60s? It seems to me a significant minority of people simply do what the globalist media tell them to do - close their eyes to this war on us in our own cities, don't protest in the streets against the war, don't worry about the piles of dead bodies and the more numerous injured, and the bereft families, just "keep calm and carry on" as if nothing's changed.

jontwest, Born in the 60’s. From this here standpoint, Western nations, on account of the patterns of hegemony and exploitation they/we have perpetrated upon the Middle East and beyond through the decades (more like, centuries), have unwittingly procreated and imported these reactionary ideologies and their resultant unspeakable atrocities. You won’t necessarily learn it in high school or in the mainstream media, but some immersion in research will be enough to inform you whence the loathing comes and why. Geez, it’s going on today in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen, Israel/Palestine, etc, and internally in many of the states in which The West has (or still does) unduly influenced the course of political affairs. Violence begets violence, and he who bashes the hornet’s nest will get stung in the end, so at last the West is reaping the wages of its own historical, atrocious sins. I am by no means telling you I either support or appreciate it, simply that I recognise well the genesis. The “Piano Player”, as Elton John would have it ....
