I am Canadian, having lived in the US for 18 years now, since I was 29. Exactly like him, it took me 10 years to begin hearing the Canadian accent Now it jumps out at me when I go back to visit. But I don't hear it in people I've known for many years, like family members. My own accent has become very neutral from having lived in different areas of Virginia and Florida for years. My Canadian friends and family tell me my accent doesn't sound Canadian anymore, but doesn't really sound American either. Just sort of - nothing.

Now you sound like Canarican 😝
@Poemi103042 жыл бұрын
Maybe cuz I’m American, but I think our standard accent sounds like nothing. Maybe your family just don’t recognize the accent you’ve gained? Interesting how you don’t notice the Canadian accent with your family. My mom is an immigrant, and I think her accent isn’t that strong, but I hear how some of my other relatives have really strong accents. Then I was told by a friend that my mom’s accent is really strong and she has a hard time understanding her! That was really surprising to me, but I guess we’re just used to hearing the people closest to us? 🤷🏻♀️

I'm canadian and the older i get the more i can pick it out, i really started noticing different canadian accents once i moved to alberta, even in some of the words that i say. There is a big difference between AB and BC than southern Ontario where i'm from. Someone picked out that i was from ontario right away. We can have more of a standard north american accent to full blown canadian hick letterkenny accent. It's all over the spectrum, It makes no sense

Its called the Canadian Shift in linguistic terms. We also have multiple accent groups depending on region. Ive lived across the country and as a result my accent has become muttled to the point where I receive "you have an accent of X place" in every place I go lol In Alberta I have a BC accent, in BC I had an ontario accent, and in Ontario I had an Alberta Accent. I think because I spend time with people from all those places and over time we absorb the mannerisms and linguistic patterns of the people around us.

I actually had a small chit chat with a guy from St.Catherines Ontario who sounded exactly the same way. My family and I went to the cottage for 2 nights at Kearney ON and went to a North Bay to see the Uni she went to. my wife and I immigrated to Canada (me in 91 and her in 88). this sure isn't city or even most town accent lol.

@oilersridersbluejays Жыл бұрын
Canada has four different accents: Prairie/Western accent, Ontario accent, Quebec accent, and Maritime/Newfoundland accents. I’m from Saskatchewan and if you said “cottage” instead of cabin, you would get strange looks. The Prairies were settled by mostly German, Slavic, and Scandinavian settlers and our accents reflect it. I can always tell if someone from Ontario or Eastern Canada is speaking and quite often I notice British Columbians as well although they sound mostly similar to us.

Accents vary depending on the region/province. Northern Ontario you get the trad Canadian accent but they don't swear as much. Southern Ontario is more or less Americanized but not entirely. Also Newfies, Quebecois etc. have very distinct accents.
@christhornycroft36865 ай бұрын
With the internet, movies, TV, etc, accents, especially in North America, have become a lot more mid Atlantic. Everyone sounds the same. Teenagers have had the Bill and Ted accent or the valley girl accent since the late 80s and sure, there are still differences, but they’re getting more subtle, especially among younger people, except in remote areas.
