All qbs in this league have their flaws. Utilizing the middle of the field has never been russ’s main game. This shouldn’t be conflated with the idea that he is incapable of doing so but that’s not where he’s at his best. However, he is great outside the numbers, an efficient passer, a beast in the 4th quarter, and a STELLAR all time deep ball passer. This makes it so that he succeeds in a play action offense where he can take shots and get rolling throws to the sidelines. Where my confusion comes in is why people believe that there is only ONE way to win in this league. Russ has already proven that he can win using his style of play. And for those who are going to point to the LOB news flash you NEED a good defense to win a championship (95% of the time). Tom Brady beat the Rams in the 2019 Super bowl scoring 13 points because his defense held them to a field goal. Von Miller and crew propped up the remains of Peyton Manning all season to win in 2016. Yet, we only criticize Russell because everyone was indoctrinated to believe that a qb should only play a particular way. He’s a trailblazer, the first true modern day dual threat qb to win the super bowl, second black qb to win, and he’s 5’11. So criticize all you want, he’s a made man and a proven commodity in this league.

It's not "He'S tOo ShOrT, hE cAn'T SEE tHe MiDdLe". Drew Brees is barely any taller and he worked the middle like a wizard, which would imply he could SEE over the line just fine. It's that Russ is generally cautious and INT averse. He's an anti-gunslinger. He doesn't look to throw over the middle because he prefers the generally safer throws closer to the sidelines. "Seeing" has little to do with it.
@t4d0W2 ай бұрын
Drew Brees was also an anomaly for a short guy who was barely seeing past his O-line man on his tippy toes and he was known as a middle field pass merchant most of his career. Throwing to the sideline for Russ is more a comfortable play style than a choice. Its just that Tomlin is willing to live with it given he has the receivers to make it work in a jump ball winner with Pickens. Along with the sacks Russ likes to eat up as a trade off for being INT averse.

@TheMelnTeam2 ай бұрын
If Wilson were that easy to stop, he'd have been out of the league a decade ago. He's a physically flawed player who's declined with age, so there will always be a ceiling to his performance, but he's still more effective than many QBs despite that. I can picture a world where the Steelers figure out the PA shot reads and call fewer concepts he can't see (or make adjustments like borderline cut blocking which lets him see, staying within the rules). I don't think he will ever return to "top 5 QB" conversation, but with the Steelers defense, he does not need to manage that. I think they're good enough to take games off of playoff teams this year, though it's hard to picture them getting past the Chiefs at arrowhead or the Bills. It also wouldn't surprise me if they lost in divisional round. Either way, I don't think they're way better or worse than the top of AFC South or good wildcard teams, and at least right now they're the best team in their own division.
@DontTakeThisSeriously6162 ай бұрын
@@TheMelnTeamFirst sentence is not necessarily true. It's easy to throw out blanket statements like that, but it's a copout. The reason he's still in the league is due to the circumstances. He and Pete Carroll had a parental type of relationship, so Pete obviously wanted to make him work and keep him around long after the Super Bowl success stopped. It's only after Russ' ego convinced him to try and get Pete Carroll fired that he was thrown out into the rest of the league where he'd no longer be protected the same way. Since fending for himself, he's had his stint at the Broncos for 2 awful years, where the only reason he was even kept at the team was because of the contract situation. And now his first year in Pittsburgh (who only took him because of that same contract situation, where he was available at the cheapest salary possible) where he didn't even play for half the season, and has had an obviously good start bc hes gone against almost all awful defenses. The thing keeping him in the league is not, and never has been, skill. It's pure circumstance and money. He was extremely lucky to have Pete Carroll and the Legion of Boom. I remember in 2019 "Let Russ cook" Defenses quickly figured out the simple offence that the Seahawks were stuck with and Russ was starting to lose his mobility. The second half of the season was not good. As a hawks fan we liked Wilson until his hubris got in his way and he thought the Hawks were limiting his success instead instead of working with what he had. So we enjoyed watching him crash in Denver. I would be happy to see him do well with the Steelers.

Russ didn't "cook" due to simple and conservative playcalling. No QB (except maybe Russ like we saw for a while) wouild thrive when the coach goes "ok, just drop back and throw it deep" without actually scheming for it. The reason they had one of the most predictable playcalling in the NFL was not because of Russ - it was because of the coach and culture. Russ had to bail them out so many damn times I lost count. Always behind late, never adjusting, keep running into wall..... and then "oh shit we're in trouble - Russ go do your thing" And when it didn' work Russ got all the blame. He was always held back in that offense. I used to be a Seattle fan, but watching the fanbase treat Russ like that was disgusting. You deserve to lose. You no longer have Russ magic to pull rabbits out of the hat late 4th quarter. Have fun being average, forgotten and irrelevant again.

@@hansbystrom9983 Maybe so, but he went to Denver and tried to play a more schemed up offense and could never throw on time, nor see open targets. I was with you until I saw how poorly he played in a different offense. The Steelers are scheming for Russ's strengths. just like the Hawks did.

The steelers kind of remind me of the 49ers. Cant run in the redzone, bad drop-back pass game. Also Brock modeled some of his game off of Russell Wilson(Drew Brees was another). And the first 3rd of the season Brock was throwing deep an awful lot. Maybe not as often as Russ but damned close. Brock is only 3"(?) taller than Russ, and I think D line know they can wreck a play by clogging the passing lanes even if the O-line is technically winning their one on ones. I see Niner fans complain he bails out too early, but I think he's partly trying to avoid tipped passes.

This was probably written and edited before the Browns game, but we saw Pittsburgh use Justin Fields for drives. The Steelers need both QBs to cover the other’s weaknesses (Fields can’t throw deep to help spread the field and open up the run but Russ isn’t as mobile and can’t consistently make short middle of the field shots). While interesting that they can hypothetically cover each one’s weaknesses, unfortunately the team tips it’s hand at what it’s going to do depending on if it rolls out number 2 or 3.

Yeah this isn’t a good video. You waited until he lost a game to talk about the fact that he doesn’t throw over the middle of the field, which fine, that’s cool. He never has. QBs have pros and cons, and his pro is he has the best deep ball in the NFL. If you look at his passing charts, he still passes over the middle, just not as frequently. The Steelers offense took the lead in the 4th q in the only game they lost, and still lost. It happens. He still outplayed and outgained the Browns, and losing one game isn’t the end of the world. If you were honestly talking about Wilson, you’d talk about the fact that he averaged 30PPG until the ravens game, in which he still made huge plays to win the game. He “can’t read the middle of the field,” yet has been playing better than Mahomes. Crazy.

That's so many words to say nothing. The fact that they happened to lose a game when this video released is likely coincidence and not relevant to the video. He has not been playing better than mahomes he has been leading a formulaic offense that hasn't been figured out yet.
@andreamaya16892 ай бұрын
He did NOT average 30ppg, it’s a team sport. He has not been passing over the middle of the field, when looking at his passing charts according to nfl next gen. Yea it’s never been a part of his game, that’s exactly why he’s making this video. You cannot make a deep playoff run playing “Russ ball” or relying on deep balls the entire time. Over time once defenses adjust, they’ll take the far ends away, and he’s forced to throw over the middle, he won’t be able to process the defense, because he can’t

Russ needs pieces around him to succeed. Brady and Mahomes are worth it because they can/could make other players better. They tailor the play to others. Russ needs the offense tailored to him. That’s the difference this year. Pit has a good run game and great defense to cover him. He could absolutely play for years like this. But if he gets greedy and wants another top 5 payday, he’ll end up the same way he did in denver. Russ is A piece. Not THE piece.

Yeah, when Mahomes had the "Russell Wilson experience" (zero protection, running for his life) in the SupeR Bowl, we all remember how he thrived and made everyone better. SO many touchdown passes!
