Russell Winfield | The Bomb Hole Episode 41

A true Icon of snowboarding Russell Winfield talks about preserving snowboard culture, being the first and only black snowboarder to have a pro model, the rockstar era of snowboarding, why reverse camber sucks, ice hockey, tweaking grabs in the 90’s, inclusivity, barrier to entry and so much more. Russell who dropped the quote “Im the Jackie Robinson of this shit” on the last cover of snowboarder magazine was crucial in the 1990’s to helping transform snowboard culture from racing and ski driven to the freestyle more skateboard influence vibe that it has today. Russell was part of Ride snowboards when it dropped, traveling the world with the Ride team offering kids a chance to bite into this new snowboard culture. Russell’s Fat Albert Pro Model art from that era is still sought after by collectors and he is working on a new pro model with ride for 2022. Uncle Russ tell’s it how it is in this week’s episode of The Bomb Hole!

So I'm at the Mt Baker Banked Slalom, the race is over and everybody is partying in the lodge getting ready for another Legendary Awards Ceremony. Always a highlight of the weekend. There is only one line for getting a beer , and everyone is in it and hanging out shooting the shit, laughing, getting faded, and generally having a good time. So I get up to the front of the line and the lady running the bar asks me which beer I want my point to the bottles and tells me all they have left are these 2 beers. Session Lager or Sessions Black. I look at her and say, "I'm not fond of the Blacks". (meaning I don't like Dark beers)All of a sudden hear a voice behind me say. "Oh yeah Benny, that's how it is, huh?" It was Russell, he starts busting my balls and laughing. Of all the times for him to be standing next to me! So fucking funny. We had a good laugh about that one.

Russell, Jake Blattner, Dale Rehberg, Rowan Rogers, Pat A ( I think??)and myself put on the Rollerblades at the tradeshow and played real hockey in the little demo area they had set up. They had stacks of sticks, plastic pucks and balls. Slap shots were flying out over the crowds. Full body checks, into the next booth. Russ schooled us all. They had 20- fifty five gallon cans full of water off to the side, to pour into the floor cleaner at night. Russell checked me so hard I rolled head first into all the water barrel's and got totally soaked. Roller Bros got super pissed and kicked us out. As we walked back to the Joyride and Ride booths laughing, I told people we were playing hockey and I fell through the ice and that's why I was wet. ( I'm only 2:13 into this and I had to stop to add a comment already. Yeah Russ!)

My son is 11 african american and adopted he has be snowboarding since he was 6 years old he loves it. I have shown him the old movies that I still have with Russell Winfield in them and I still have a bunch of Transworld and snowboard magazines from back in the day with Russell in them. My son's favorite rider is now Russell. He likes knowing him and his little brother aren't the only to African-Americans that ride. We mainly ride at Sundance resort some times we here people in lift line say stuff like black people can snowboard wow or well thats not something I expected to see. Love the covert racism.

So rad! Back at the 1993 US Open (Stratton), my buddy almost stole Russ' snowboard that was chilling inside of Syd and Dusty's. We were eyeing it, sizing up any possible resistance..had no idea it was Russell's. It was a prototype of the RJ model I believe, just white top sheet with a red Ride logo, and prototype aluminum bindings which looked like some next level tinker toys type deal. Sick, we had to have it. I was going to be the diversion, my buddy's job is to actually grab the board. Just about to commit to it and follow through, and this little kid of around 14 years old or something (typical shop grom) comes up and says "That's Russell Winfield's board". I immediately cancelled the planned thievery and told Fauch "Fuck, Russell is a badass..let's go"

Dude LOVE Russ' take on major figures giving back to snowboarding... The problem with Shaun is he probably he thinks his sheer fame is his contribution to snowboarding. Which is maybe true to a certain point, the 2006 Olympics was one of my main intros to snowboarding and I had a couple of his boards growing up. But while guys like Tony, Danny and Red are using their success to build parks, make snowboarding more fun and accessible to the masses, Shaun is using his to... get another Olympic medal for himself? I also think it's super important for the everyman snowboarder to uphold the culture.

To be fair the skate park foundation (formerly the Tony Hawk Foundation) provides some funding for the skate park projects. A majority of the funding comes from the individual municipalities that own them not from Tony, but yeah Shaun White should do way more for the snowboard community that has provided him with his life.

I was there, in the middle of it all. You are not the first black snowboarder to do it by profession, Trevor Snowden was the first. And you do not have the only pro model to go to a black rider either, trevor also had a model with Joel snowboards. When you mentioned watching your inspiration, new kids on the Twok, you forgot to mention that Trevor was in that movie. You’re leaving this dude out… And he paid dearly. He’s now a paraplegic as the result of an accident in a big air competition in 1997 as a professional. He’s part of the south shore posse… I was there dude. And I know that you know this…
