The weird thing about 'posh' protocol and etiquette is that the only people obsessed with doing things 'correctly' are class bigots (with no class), social climbers, and neurotic types who don't understand what really matters in life. What the royals get up to is simply not important to me. Meanwhile, back at the etiquette and snobbery: the really, really top British elite are so far beyond giving a toss what other people (including the royal family) think about them that they will happily wear scruffy clothes, sleep in a deck chair in a shed on the vegetable patch, sneak down to the pub for a sly pint and fish and chips on the way home, ride a rusty bicycle, and generally go about looking like tramps. It takes two thousand years of breeding to be so non-posh that you can look down on royalty.😁 I've met American peeps who are horrified by that. To them, the whole point of being rich is to live like Donny Trumphole or a drug baron or a Russian oligarch: servants, limousines, helicopters, mansions, superyachts, gold bathroom fittings... No! That's how trash behaves! Brits treat the nobility and the royals with disdain because it's traditional and life's just easier that way. Nobody cares about the landed gentry. But from what I've seen, US folk feel that wealth equals worth, and that the super-rich should be treated with the reverence due to gods or even A-list film stars... but that's not how it works over here. The English (and later on, the British) monarchy is a self-sustaining thing that doesn't require regular maintenance in the form of grovelling respect. It's based on who you are, not what you can do and, as a result, creates a system that no one gives two hoots about. That makes it incredibly strong. Its existence isn't threatened by irreverence or a lack of respect. We can say what we like about the royals; in some countries, Turkey, for instance, calling the president a tosser will get you a long prison sentence. Tut, tut. What a feeble and insecure system... Lighten up, guys. Learn to laugh at yourselves. A social gaffe isn't the end of the world.🤭
