Mines are horrible, indiscriminate weapons with long-term costs/effects, wide areas in the Huertgen Forest in Germany (WW2) are still impassable, but they are not per se illegal, the major military powers USA, Russia and China refused to oust them. However, Ukraine ratified the Ottawa Treaty whereas Russia did not hence it would be unlawful for Ukraine to use, stockpile etc anti-personnel mines whereas Russia is under no such constraint: shows once more that international law is mere fiction if shove comes to push.

I admit to being surprised that Russia did not attack Ukraine with a large scale missile and drone attack last night. Tactically speaking the only predictable aspect of Russian Military operations is their unpredictability. I can usually predict what the Ukrainians will do, not so much the Russians In my option attacking Ukraine with a few ballistic missiles is not a adequate response to the major west provocation of attacking Russia with NATO supplied and NATO operated cruise missiles and ATTCMs. Conclusion...The Russians are planning something. Let's hope the western leaders in the US France an Britain lose some sleep thinking about it. I am often astonished at the competence of the Russian leadership. They are methodical, calm, calculating and ultimately very deadly. A formidable opponent indeed. Contrast this with The Ukrainian leadership. I say this with a caviet. In my option the Ukrainian military decisions are mostly being made in Washington and London. These military decisions appear to be chaotic, short sighted and on the surface extremely ill conceived. Why the contrast? Perhaps the quality of the Western military leaders is very poor, or the political leaders are disregarding the military advice for their own political agenda. We will let history to decide. Given how the Russians appear to have vastly Superior tactical and strategic long range planning, I don't see how NATO can beat them.

This needs to be understood, front and central - the incumbent forces in control of NATO and western governments have at most 8 weeks to start WW3. At that point, no matter what anyone might think of him, Trump is to be inaugurated and a whole different set of priorities comes in with him that do not include Ukraine (other than to get the matter ended expeditiously). If, however, they get WW3 then they can declare emergency and martial law, halt the inauguration for "continuity of government" and cling on to power - at least in their minds. I visited the missile factory in Dniepro in December of 2003 as part of a DoD Nunn-Lugar inspection team. I am surprised that the factory still existed this late in the SMO. It's been that way with other obvious targets also. That factory produced the missiles that were transported to Cuba in the 1962 crisis. I'm assuming, of course, that the factory was targeted, which may be a leap on my part. I also wonder about the lack of information about NATO dead. Occasionally, there's a mention of a mercenary. Some people think that a global war would then just eliminate their duties and obligations to pay taxes. If you read the laws in place at least in the US law after 12 hours any remaining survivors automatically have to pay taxes.
