Russia Fumes At Canada's "Theft" As Trudeau Forfeits Cargo Plane For Ukraine On Kyiv Visit

Canada’s government has announced that it is seizing a giant Russian cargo plane, as part of sanctions against Moscow. The targeted Russian aircraft, an Antonov 124, is owned by Volga-Dnepr Airlines, which is part of the Canadian sanctions list. The plane has been grounded at Toronto Pearson Airport since Feb. 27, 2022, days after Russia launched its invasion in Ukraine. The large white and blue cargo jet had arrived in Canada on the same day sanctions were announced last February. According to Russian state media TASS, the plane was carrying a cargo of Covid tests from China. The aircraft had landed two hours before Canada closed its airspace to Russian aircraft, as per TASS. Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, who’s in Kyiv on a surprise visit, announced that Ottawa will send the assets of the plane to Ukraine. Watch this video to know more.

The logistics of launching half a million troops all the way across Russia, Across Siberia, then an amphibious operation across the Bering straight or across the arctic sea to reach Canada is well beyond Russia. We would have to either hold a national day of mourning for 500 000 crewmen lost at sea (from American submarines sniping them off) of be massively inconvenienced having to send humanitarian aid that far into the Canadian north so these people don't die from starvation or exposure to the elements. I've heard also that at the highest levels Putin was basically told by the Americans that should he fire a nuke into the west one of the first few retaliatory nukes would literally be aimed at his personal residence (wherever he happened to be) and that due to spy satellites we always know exactly where he is inside Russia

I passed by this plane a few times driving down the highway when it was first impounded at the airport in Toronto. It was like a mini attraction - people taking selfies with this giant on the other side of the airport fence in full view. That thing was gargantuan. Canada manages an export surplus, thus they can support Ukraine as long as it takes. The aircraft that was leased to Russian airline operators before the onset of the conflict was the equipment that was summarily seized by Russia, amounting to hundreds of billions worth of equipment, not money. Russia also destroyed the largest aircraft in the world in their airborne assault on Hostomel Airport, near Kyiv, the Mryia, another Antonov. Antonov is a Ukrainian aircraft builder. The managers at Antonov left Ukraine for Germany before the invasion and left behind the aircraft, which were destroyed by Russia. I don’t see any theft in particular. Spoils of war.

Considering that most did not fly for more than a year and its hard to believe that they got proper maintenance and the spare parts for repairs these might not be in the best condition. I have not heard much outcry over these planes and that the West desperately wants them back. Dunno if there is even a demand. I really have my doubts that Russia uses them often considering that many... if not most countries do not let Russian plans enter their airspace anymore.

That is misleading. Western planes were leased to Russian airlines. But EU sanctions stopped them from leaving Russia. Russia attempted to buy the planes which were privately leased, but the West decided to file an insurance claim for the planes negating any offers Russia was willing to make to purchase the planes which were grounded by the sanctions. The few planes not located in Russia were returned to the owners. The planes were not gifted to the Russian airlines... the western planes were abandoned due to them filing an insurance loss claim.

On July 17, 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed in eastern Ukraine. All 298 people on board were killed. Investigations showed that the plane was shot down by a Russian BUK missile. The Netherlands is doing everything it can to bring the suspects to justice. The Netherlands is conducting criminal investigations together with Belgium, Malaysia, Australia, and Ukraine. In May 2018, the Netherlands and Australia also held Russia liable for its part in the downing of the aircraft. The taking of an innocent life is of a different order than theft. Let's talk about that with the ambassador. I am curious about his answer.

Pearson Airport has a large infield terminal and several other areas where aircraft sit for long periods. Even on the east side where it was towed to. there is a lot of room but it is abundantly obvious that it was placed as close to the fence beside the busy highway 427 as possible as a show.
