Your explanation might explain both. Morale must be pretty miserable for these Russian tank crews. How many well-trained professional technically proficient people can there be left amongst these guys who have to climb into a T-72 and head towards this drone blizzard.

the Russians can't fully produce tanks. It can only repair old Soviet ones. And they can't replace Thales optics and other critical electronics. So the technological level of tanks will get worse day by day. Until they have to repair the t-34-85. If you open the elevation map of this region, you will see that initially Russia had positions much more favorable than Avdiivka since 2014. And to continue the offensive from Avdiivka = ruZzz will have to attack from the lowlands and Ukrainian positions will be on the heights. So basically the loss of Avdiivka is not critical. Russia lost 2 times more soldiers than the population of Avdiivka before the war.

​@ArcticWolf00Alpha0 the German, American and British tanks are designed to protect the crews but Russian tanks are designed to be cheap and easy to produce. Russian tanks are designed to be used in mass formations not in small attacks. The fact that Russia is only using 2 or 3 tanks shows that they either don't have many tanks left or that they don't have the trained leaders that know how to use them. The mass attack strategy is based on hundreds of tanks attacking a single point and the Apache helicopter and a10 were designed to counter that strategy. Basically the Russian military has no real command structure and the Russian soldiers are even forced to buy their own food and water while in the combat zone. At the start of the war Ukraine deliberately targeted the Russian supply vehicles especially fuel trucks which caused the Russian advance to halt short of their objectives due to a lack of fuel. Ukraine has been strategically destroying Russian supply depots which has caused Russian artillery use to drop by 80% while Russia is focused on taking towns and villages Ukraine is focused on destroying the Russian military infrastructure and equipment. If Ukraine wanted they could target Moscow and destroy civilian buildings but they have better targets that will have more of an impact on the outcome of the war.

I find it very noticeable how 'humane' this approach actually is. The charge of the kamikaze drones is not aiming to entirely blow such a machine up at first strike, but make it unusable and give the crew the chance to flee (and maybe surrender). I suspect Western nations are probably well advanced in neutralising the drone threat. So it will not be a tactic of use for long. Their vehicles will doubtless be fitted with some anti drone system. Be it electronic jamming or a small bullet sized ante aircraft device. Even some laser gun, easily melt the plastic little things. Certainly the west is using this as a testing and learning lab.

I'm actually impressed by how often the crews are able to escape. This is the downside (upside??) of current drone warfare; the damage is usually juuuust enough to disable the tank. The crew escapes but the tank is soon destroyed. In fights between main battle tanks, I don't think the losing crew often walks away.

Russia doesn't have the ability to make new and improved tanks. If it did, we would see squads of T-14 Armata tanks on the battlefield. They don't exist. Russia is running out of machines and men at a terrifying pace.
