Rockets, missiles, hypersonic glide vehicles: most modern airborne weapons have one thing in common - they’re fast. In Russia, however, a slow-moving threat from Ukraine is making an unexpected impact.

I love the honesty of actually admitting one knows only so much, but still feels it worth mentioning.

Ukraine has used cell phones mounted on pole to listen for drones, then relayed their positions to defenders who were told where and when the drones would arrive.

this stopped being a news report and started being a DoD industrial commercial less than 2 minutes into the video. Here are some questions I have for you on why you just blindly accepted these two guy's opinions as facts. Do you not see the daily weather reports when they go to the "Doppler Radar"? Is the weatherman pointing out flying debris and hailstones not registering in your brain that our 40+ yr old systems not only can and do see slow-moving objects, even small objects, but they also have a near blanket of coverage of the entire nation, unlike what is happening in Russia and Ukraine? Have you not read a single story since 2014 on investigations of drone violations of Federal Regulations? The Govt sees the slightly larger than palm-sized drones at 50' using standard Air Traffic Control equipment, and seems to be able to see them nearly anywhere in the US. Do you not read how horribly the Russian/Iranian drones are doing in Ukraine and Yemen? Imagine if the US had more airspace denial systems in Ukraine, the +90% shootdown rate would be even higher. The only danger is in what the Govt allows or responds to. While it is "young" in military doctrine, the Govt can be "forgiven" on failures it deems as being good for the ideological cause, be it party power or corrupt defense industry, or some other powerful donor. This article just opens that "forgiveness" door a bit further. Here are some weapons systems that are cheap (comparatively) and could easily be utilized to eliminate both the singularity threats, as well as the mass volume threats. CRAM Red Eye Stinger Laser Defensive Weapon System SHORAD RIM 114 rolling airframe Every one of those systems would take out every type of drone used by Ukraine, Turkey, Iran, and Russia. Scale, layering, and implementing would be done on the situation so that you don't use a $2M missile to take out a $1k drone, but also not eliminate such options if the situation deems it a valued addition to the defense against an incoming attack. Russia, and for the most part the world outside of Japan and the USA, problems are their systems were more for show than practical use since image and saber rattling is the most common defense employed by countries. The USA and their defense partner, Japan, have been actually developing working and effective systems against drone swarms, drone use, and anti-missile defense. They don't rely on the image of being capable, they go out of their way to demonstrate and test the limits of their capabilities.

Most weather radars aren't currently equipped to identify and track small aircraft. And yes, those effector systems could work... But they're hardly set up across the US/NATO nations in a way to offer wide protection. Also, a couple of former US military generals with multiple decades of experience aren't just "some guys"

@@BroadcastRyan22 no offense, but you are flat wrong. Those systems just don't show you that information because someone along the way has narrowed the scope of information that they distribute to you to be reflective of the subject/business that they are in and that you are a customer of, but make no mistake, normal Doppler radar can track small objects moving slow or fast, it just needs to be told to display that info instead of throwing it away, or not displaying it. As for NATO, supplemental services are being performed by planes and satellites for US Defense if not NATO specifically or even specific countries in Europe, that very much can track low-flying slow-moving objects, using a whole list of methods to include different bands of radar as well as light as well as thermal sensory. You can monitor the online webpages of public services showing planes with transponders on that show the flight paths of these planes with sensors, and then add in what isn't being shown, the flights with their transponders off, and stealth rules being observed, for which also have lots of sensory data showing such things as slow-moving low flying drones over NATO. Let me add this too, if it's in blue waters, the US is monitoring its movement and can "see/hear" the movement of a cast of crabs in the level of detail, as slow and small as they are. The issue with the US isn't about getting the data, it is about the distribution of that data to the right caches to be given a proper evaluation and assignment. The levels of how far ahead of the world we are at that, are so vast, saying the Grand Canyon for scale isn't adequate enough. Imagine if the Patriot systems in Ukraine were plugged into the network that gives them access to US DoD sources, they would know so much more and sooner than they do now, enabling them to better position the right assets in the right area to offer the best defense of what is possible from the known targets of interest. IE, showing what bombers and attack aircraft are loaded with before they taxi down the runway, what ship is preparing to get into a launch position, etc. It can not be understated the amount of data the US gathers and the amount of sensors they have deployed to get that data and the levels of their communication structures to do it it all and disseminate it all.

I think we're closer in agreement than you might think, especially considering you admit Doppler radar needs to be "told" to look for certain objects... I'm still not convinced the average weather radar would be able to tell the difference between types of craft though... Or that it's a craft at all...which is why the generals are advocating for more intricate systems. Also, never said the US doesn't have the kinds of effectors needed to stop slow moving drone planes. Clearly it does...but the systems aren't in wide deployment currently or even in development to go into wide deployment. Not in the US, and not in NATO countries. So, yes... The US and NATO have the tech to counter the threat... But it's not deployed as widely as it needs to be.
