Russia launches counter space weapons into orbit, threatens US satellite: Pentagon says

Russia is taking tensions with the United States into lower earth orbit.
The Pentagon confirmed during a press briefing on Tuesday that the Kremlin recently launched a counter-space weapon into the same path as a U.S. government satellite.

It's funny to hear this from the USA. The US and its allies rejected in the UN Security Council a draft resolution on the prevention of an arms race in outer space, which was introduced by Russia. During the vote, the document was supported by 7 of the 15 members of the Security Council, including China, but representatives of Britain, the US, France, Japan and several other countries rejected the document. Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, recalled that earlier the US and its allies "assured everyone of their commitment to peaceful outer space," but now "they have finally thrown off their masks." China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, also noted that China is very disappointed that the Security Council did not adopt the draft resolution. The resolution provided for a ban on the deployment of not only weapons of mass destruction in space (as previously proposed by the US and Japan), but also any weapons in general.
