Russians recruited around 30k - 35k troops per month this year. That means, 350k - over 400k troops this year. The number of russian troops in Ukraine just increased by 100k. So around 1/4 million, maybe more, up to nearly 350k, are casualities this year alone. That means, this year is the worst for Russia, in terms of losses, since 2022.

The other issues with thinner hulled ships is they are usually given a lifespan of 20 years. Most navies will do what they call a half life refit at20 years old, take the ship into drydock, replace the corroded and worn hull plates, and this can extend the life of the ship to 40 years. All of these Volgoneft class were built in the 1960s and early seventies so are all over 50 years of age, and shouldnt be in the water anymore. russia probably couldnt insure them, but still uses them to transfer oil to and from larger tankers.....but now.....they have lost these ships AND their oil. I suspect those ships would have been fine in the black sea when they were under 20 years old, but they are too weak from all the corrosion on the hull, bilges and superstructure now......(new edit),....not only that but, as these ships would have turned twenty during the late 1980s and early 1990s...when the soviet union collapsed....odds are they never went through a half life refit..so with over 50 years of rust and corrosion eating at the hulls, I will bet you could take a ball peen hammer and punch holes right through the side of the hull in places......good for sailing in calm water, but a storm is going to cause it to break up....as we are seeing here!

I work for a tanker ship company, and commercial standards are not like the navy (because quality is not military-grade and maintenance is far more regular). In the USA, oil tankers are double-hulled for environmental protection, and regulated to go into drydock every 2 years for maintenance and repairs. If Russia did not do maintenance for 10 years, much less 40, these things for sure would be sailing rust-buckets.

They are the river tankers that are built for shallow waters so they don't have thick reinforced hulls like the open ocean tankers. So the choppy water from the storm caused the hulls to bend and Crack and break apart because the ships were not designed to be sailed into open deep water. But the russians need parts for their open water tankers so they tried using the shallow water tankers in a way they were not supposed to be used.
