Russia - NTV Lashes Out At Kukly Criminal Case

Russia's largest independent television network, NTV, lashed out
Tuesday (18/7) at police for launching an investigation against a
satiric programme that features rubber caricatures of political
leaders. The head of NTV said the criminal case was a bid by the
State to frighten the free press before the upcoming elections.
NTV's weekly "Kukly" programme is accused of ridiculing and
belittling President Yeltsin and other top government officials by
portraying them as down and out tramp. At a Moscow news
conference on Tuesday, NTV President Igor Malashenko said the
moves against the programme were "an attempt to intimidate the
Russian mass media".
