A lot of places in the US incorporate native american names/words, including states, which is why you get some really weird stuff that you wouldn't normally see in English. Mississipi is a perfect example of this. Plus you also have some French and Spanish places thrown in with the English and voila! The names are a fustercluck of who knows how many cultures
