Russia's MiG-31 Foxhound Fighter jets Moscow's Old Mach 3 Monster - The Mikoyan MiG-31 Foxhound is a supersonic interceptor aircraft developed for use by the Soviet Air Forces. The aircraft was designed by the Mikoyan design bureau as a replacement for the earlier MiG-25 Foxbat. The MiG-31 is based on and shares design elements with the MiG-25. The MiG-31 has the distinction of being one of the fastest combat jets in the world. It continues to be operated by the Russian Air Force and the Kazakhstan Air Force following the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Russian Defence Ministry expects the MiG-31 to remain in service until 2030 or beyond.
A long-range supersonic interceptor aircraft, the MiG-31 Foxhound, a two-seat aircraft developed principally for the Russian and Kazakhstan Air Forces, was derived from MiG-25 Foxbat. The maiden flight of the MiG-31 took place in September 1975. Mikoyan is the designer and manufacturer of the MiG-31.
MiG-31 can work efficiently in all weather conditions while fulfilling visual flight rules (VFR) and instrument flight rules (IFR), day and night. It is equipped with state-of-the-art digital avionics. MiG-31 was the first soviet fighter aircraft to have true look-down and shoot-down capability.
Approximately 500 MiG-31 aircraft have been produced, out of which 370 were delivered to the Russian Air Force and 30 are in service with Kazakhstan Air Force. The remaining aircraft were upgraded to different variants under several upgrade programmes. Only some of the Russian MiG fleet have been upgraded to MiG-31BM standards under the upgrade programme.
The MiG-25 Foxbat was unable to fly at low altitudes. The installation of inefficient turbojet engines led to decrease in combat range at supersonic speeds and an increase in the speed gauge of the MiG-25 resulted in the destruction of the aircraft’s engine.
In an effort to overcome the drawbacks of the MiG-25 Foxbat, the MiG-31 was developed to fly at low altitudes with required supersonic speeds. MiG-31 is equipped with efficient low-bypass-ratio turbofan engines, which allow an increase in combat range.

@@teetar1751 the 30 mm A-10 gun isn't that impressive. Every russian fighter jet has 30 mm gun standard. yeah the a-10 fires faster ok but can only do very short burst otherwise the plane will stall and fall. The Frogfoot is much better ground attack plane overall.
@teetar1751

Sure russian jets Have a 30 mm cannon. With about 200 rounds. And Russian 30 mm isnt Us 30mm. Idk the ballistic stats for either. But I can guarantee, the GAU 8 can cut threw armor much better , I doubt the Russain standard 30mm Is using Depleted uranium, its likely using some kinda mine shell, for anti air use.. But comparing the 2 is Apples to Oranges. I'd say the 30mm 2a42, mounted on Ka 50s, Mi 28, and BMPs/BMDs is likely better then the 20 mm The USA issues on Apache, and M3 Bradley. But saying the Frogfoot is better is Dubious at best. First off it's a day/good weather only aircraft. It Has no LGB, or JDAM, The Max AGM, on Frogfoot is I believe 6, where The Hog, can Pack 6 AGMs On One pylon. And those Agm 65s are Much more expensive and have equal power, likely better optics and accuracy. Another advantage is the a 10c variants Target pod, and advanced Avionics, allow track and search of targets Off the nose, and nearly 340 degrees, in FLIR, or Day TV modes. Where your ROOK, Must Search, identify, get fire permission, Laze and launch on targets on its nose IE Flying Tword, which is much more dangerous, and difficult. While a 10c can hover searching off to the Side or rear for targets. A much safer and easier job. Saying all this, I admire both aircraft. Both fill the role, of Low and slow CAS well. Both are famous and neither has ever been compared scientifically. Both are old designs, being refitted with new tech, given new life. And both are famously survivable. If I had to choose, I'd choose the hog, and all the benefits and support the USAF Bring it.

The MiG-31 is a behemoth of a Fighter plane. It is huge. It is difficult to imagine the size of this plane without some comparison but if any other contemporary fighter would be placed next to it- it would appear puny in size, even the biggest in the US or any other fleet. The height of the plane is almost 6 meters(21 ft) and is 22.6 meters(74 ft) long, would give you the idea. Almost the size of a twin-engined modern mid-size passenger jet. It's replacement design is underway, tentatively named MiG-41[PAK-DP], would be a 5++ or a 6th Gen fighter with Mach-4 + speed. To enter service by 2034-36.

If projectile is capable of acceleration (let us stay in same dimensions) of 340 m per second, it means, that in a second after launching, the projectile would reach speed of 700 m/s ... that is mach 2. get it?

Sapphire fire control set was the first with true lookdown/shootdown functionality but had problems with bus speed and signal processing, so target discrimination was never fantastic and this remained an issue right through until the second series MiG-29S and Flankers. Sapphire is found on most 3rd generation Soviet fighters including Su-15, MiG-23 and the update version of the MiG-25, even the initial production MiG-29. Basically every major Soviet fighter during the 80s used the Sapphire. You did mention the electronically scanned phased array of the MiG-31 Zaslon fire control set, which is significantly different because it uses a coordination of various antennae mounted throughout the airframe in addition to the main dish nosecone to vastly increase signal reception and with a dedicated rear seat operator to assist electronic management is obviously a far more capable system, which at the time was matched only by the radar of the B1-B in the west, certainly nothing in a fighter until the development of AESA. Where the Soviets compensated for a slight shortfall in the target discrimination capabilities of the Sapphire was firstly their entire aerial doctrine was, contrary to American belief entirely defensive and wholly designed to operate within the Soviet EWR and PVO air defence ground station networks and secondly an early mainstream development of datalink between aircraft within a squadron so that signal information was shared between several, widely spaced fighters in formation, with the lead aircraft providing signal interpretation and target distribution from the combined antennae of the entire formation. The MiG-31 was designed specifically to perform this function, as is the later Su-30 which sets it apart from the regular tandem seat version of Su-27. Similarly the Su-33 and MiG-29K differ from their land based counterparts in coordinating their fire control system with warships in the fleet. A lot was mentioned about the Aviadvigatel engines supersonic capability at low altitude but nothing was mentioned about most 3rd generation non-bypass turbojets being similarly capable, it was introduction of the low-bypass turbofan engine which reduced supersonic capabilities in modern warplanes, in particular at low altitude as a trade for vastly increased fuel efficiency and loaded combat range. The Aviadvigatel are notable as being the exception to this rule but one might keep in mind most of the high performing older non-bypass turbojets were as fast or faster at low altitude, many of them could almost achieve maximum speed at altitude within just a few dozen metres of sea level, for example pretty much all of the century series American fighters had very fast supersonic speeds at very low altitudes. Similarly Iraqi MiG-25 were witnessed by F-15 pilots evading Sparrow missiles at low enough altitude to kick sand into the air, whilst travelling fast supersonic. The reason is high bleed turbojets like those equipped in the fastest older jet types have maximised operational efficiency at supersonic speeds unlike low-bypass afterburning turbofans, which are most energy efficient at fast subsonic speeds. This, combined with needle-like streamlining is how they were able to achieve high Mach ratings using relatively low thrust engines compared to today and for the same reasons were, in some cases almost as fast on the deck as they were at high altitude. The Aviadvigatel is the notable exception because instead of being designed for maximised efficiency at a subsonic, heavy load bearing cruise speed like virtually all NATO 4th generation fighters these engines maintained a very specific engineering requirement of 2.35 Mach normal cruise with standard war load. In order to achieve this during bench development the engines would have to be designed for fast supersonic speed at low altitude, completely unlike other low-bypass, afterburning turbofan engines as opposed to turbojets of the previous generation. In other words the MiG-31 engines design requirements were to be fuel efficient during high Mach operation at medium loads, whilst other modern turbofans are generally designed to be fuel efficient in a fast subsonic cruise loaded heavy. The MiG-31 does have a non-afterburning 0.85 Mach economy cruise but it isn't nearly as fuel efficient at this speed as something like an F/A-18 Hornet or even a MiG-29. It has an aerial refuelling probe to offset this and can be fitted with ferry tanks under the wings although they are never carried during combat operations. The speed limitations of both the MiG-31 and MiG-25 are airframe limitations of a shade over 2.8 Mach before window framing, pitot and other essential components begin to melt. The engines of both aircraft are certainly capable and have demonstrated higher speeds during breakdowns in flight management but these are strictly air accidents and not by intention, it is like saying an airliner might exceed its VNE or maximum Mach number during an air crash. The normal speed restriction of the MiG-25 is 2.5 Mach due to engine limitations although 2.8 Mach is authorised during war operations where risk is acceptable and this speed has been repeatedly demonstrated by all variants during specially prepared speed tests and record attempts. The MiG-31 is normally capable of 2.83 Mach airframe limitation without restriction, which any example in service has no problem achieving. The initial flight in 1975 wasn't really a MiG-31 but an early development prototype based upon a redesign of the MiG-25 to increase the interceptor capability. The thing to remember about the MiG-25 is it was first proposed in direct response to the 1958 pending Lockheed Article-11 prototyping of project Oxcart, the Blackbird program which the Soviets feared might mature into a nuclear strike aircraft and also high Mach capable nuclear cruise missiles, at the time it was unclear if strategic development would head in the direction of ICBM or cruise missiles as American rockets were not very reliable. During the 1960s and Foxbat development however it became quite apparent the strategic arms would be using ICBM and so the MiG-25 program shifted entirely to a focus on the reconnaissance-bomber variant, which entered production first. The interceptor, which was a couple of years behind didn't even get the improved series production engines until its midlife update, they were reserved for the RB Foxbats which were initially a faster aircraft when carrying loads. A couple of more years however and serious attention was again returned to the interceptor version of the MiG-25P, to redevelop this model specifically for the interceptor role and this was the MiG-25MP (improved interceptor), which was to become the MiG-31. Thus the first flight of the "MiG-31" was really a redesigned MiG-25 with improved thrust from its Tumansky-Soyuz engines in order to accommodate better equipment for the interceptor role. It later matured into the MiG-31 using entirely new engines and avionics from a slightly later technological period. In the meantime the MiG-25PD in the late 70s updated the Foxbat interceptors as an interim craft with the RB series engines and a Sapphire fire control system with lookdown/shootdown capability and a lot less weight than the earlier Smerch, also adding some ECM facilities and this is probably what the first MiG-25P would've been like if focus had remained on the interceptor variant during development. As it was that first Foxbat interceptor really had to be directed entirely by GCI, with the pilot acting as a mere passenger until enemy ECM burn through and missile firing was required. The MiG-25PD and moreso the MiG-31 are far more capable of independent air crew operation.

Im not sure about technology... Mig 25 was absolutely behind in technology, while having only speed advantage.... Wheather we like it or not but MIG might go bankrupt, cause latest MIGS are still behind in technology even compare to Russian brand Su/ Sukhoi, not even talking about Lockheed Martin.... Su, are the only ones who have Designs and Prototypes and capabilities to produce 5th gen jets. Su57 is in a small production and Su75 (analog of F35) is about get announced .. while latest Mig35 is really just an upgraded Mig27 which is 20 +30 years outdated as a concept... Also in Terms of technology, no one beats F22- Raptor...

30mm cannon ? :D Little mistake there, you guys said 30mm Gsh-6 23M :D Little information for those who dont know about russian cannon naming, the caliber is always in the weapon designation Gsh-6 23 = 23mm Gsh 6 30 = 30mm Gsh 1-30 = 30mm And the number in front of the caliber is always the barrel count so: Gsh 1-30 = single barrel Gsh 6-30 = 6 barrel gatling Gsh is used in aircraft. AK on ships for example AK630 6 barrel 30mm gatling and on Anti air platforms at least in soviet era mostly ZU for example ZU 23-2 or ZU 23-4 but on the ZU i believe you need to differentiate on weapon and platform i think while the weapon stays the same as on the Gsh the platform the weapon is mounted on depends on the name. Sp the MiG-31 would never have a high flying fast target to ever shoot at. So why do you think there was a need for a Mach 3 interceptor? How many kills have the MIG-31 achieved? Zero...

Russain fighter aircraft's superior performance in any mode (Air to air or air to ground etc.) is basically because of the Delivery Platform's charcterstics and that of the missiles. Russia perfected the rt of developing superior platforms (Americans know it better about MIG-31) and the integration of even a mediocre missile on the platform. In US, somehow the missiles and the aircaft are developed very often complimentarily. Now, talking turkey......... Mig-31 has a combat radius of 700 Kms, can launch missiles for multiple targets, get close to the long range enemy by Intertial Navigation before weaponising the radar, has a Weapon Station Officer ........ A platform combining so many strengths has not been designed and produced by any country ( I hope I am wrong) so far. MIG - 31 is a conventional aircraft, but, a class apart from others. ..... Sam
