In pre-revolutionary Russia, the Cossacks were the Tsars' most feared enforcers. Now, they've been re-enlisted as Protectors of the Motherland and are using their new powers to target minorities.
"If I face a tough situation, I simply let my horse loose on that person," states one Cossack. Keen to exploit their military skills, the Kremlin has granted Cossacks responsibility for law and order in certain districts. Using their official powers, they harass minorities like the Meskhetian Turks. "They come to our houses and beat people up", states one refugee. Turks claim the harassment is increasing and believe the orders are coming from above. But the Kremlin refutes any suggestion of state-sponsored persecution.

The Cossacks, devout Russian Orthodox Christians, were part of the guards of the Imperial Tsar Nicholas II. Their Muslim counterparts are currently the Circassian Imperial guard of Jordan. Although Putin may be officially recognizing the Cossack regiments as of late, he is also more diplomatic with the Muslim sectors of Russia. The Cossacks are great equestrian fighters, but compared to the Circassians and Russian military, the Cossack regiments seen here are slovenly. It is time to regain and retain their former glory and respectability (as well as military-grade cleanliness) nd to also attain a more diplomatic way of dealing with those of faiths other than Russian Orthodox. I am a Russian Orthodox who lives near a large mosque, a synoguge, many Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, 2 Greek Orthodox and 2 Russian Orthodox churches here in New York City. If we behaved in such a hateful, unconstrained manner, our established civilized neighborhood relations would deteriorate. Cossacks, it is time to become more refined in your execution of your assigned duties, more genteel. The Imperial Tsar would have demanded it.

Okay, I'm russian and I probably should welcome this, but for some reason I don't think rasing radical nationalists from childhood and giving them some "legal power" is a good idea. Still, there is a point to it - men of strong ideas are harder to be bribed, and that could improve the efficency of public order protection in said regions of Russia. The problem is that the cossacks' ideas are not those of general law and order. A law enforcement officer should treat all citizens equally, while these guys are nationalists, and proud of it. There sure is a problem of ethnic crime in Russia, I've seen it, I faced it, I welcome protection from it. But I don't want any innocent muslims being hurt. Hope any resonable fellow Russian will argee.

They're often given the credit for chasing Napoleon out of Russian in 1812, but instead their true motives were shown when the Grand Armee could no longer carry its loot back to France. The Cossacks often chose to plunder the French than continue on the pursuit. In many cases these "heroes" chose personal gain over any patriotic motive. Its also worth mentioning that the Germans, very early in the war raised cossack divisions of their own with tens of thousands of Russians either defecting or chosing to serve the invader. Or better yet how about the defection of Ivan Mazepa...a Cossack hetman, to the army of Charles XII on the eve Poltava. The same people who were absent from the Battle of Borodino. The Cossacks are nothing but opportunist thugs who have sided with the most vile of regimes and did their bidding. They are no heroes.
