Problem with getting closer to west is that west always treat Asians as slaves. It is like a master-slave relationship. But Russia treats India as equals and never pressurize India to do something which India doesn't want.

US is loosing India’s trust to some extent and the onus is on US to build that trust. To meet USA’s objective, India has been reducing defense imports and dependence on Russia. But at the same time USA and west is not ready to quickly take that place - a lot of promises and MOUs but not equal and quick implementation from USA. Adding to this, west is also playing the Khalistan protection and pressuring India and a SQUAD. Game goes on.
