I am a veteran of the first Cold War. We didn't fight, other than proxy wars here and there. So this is what I have to say about this Cold War II: A. We totally survived Cold War I without a single nuke being dropped. In spite of there being enough nukes on the planet to blow us all up hundreds of times, the only nukes used in actual combat were used to end World War II. Since then, nothing. Lots of kinetic weapons, but no nukes. B. A lot of you are quite young and have no memories of this time. It was tense, even scary at times. During the Cuban Missile Crisis incident with Cuba when Russia tried to implant nuclear missiles into Cuba, my father (a career US Air Force officer) disappeared for a while. We didn't know where he was or what he was doing. But, he came home safe and sound and did not have to kill anyone. C. In my opinion, Putin is saber-rattling, threatening, like a dog trying to scare you. It is a threat that, sure, he can fulfill, but will he? I doubt it. Putin knows that NATO would obliterate Russia with our own nukes if he deploys even one missile into any NATO territory. Even if he wre insane enough to try it, I believe there are enough sane people in his council of advisors and military people who would like to continue breathing. D. This could get even scarier. As a child, I was able to deal with it even though in school we ran out into the hallways and covered our heads with our knees in bomb drills (as if that was going to help). If I could deal with it, so can you. So, breath slow and deep, me beauties, and pray that those with sense in Russia will remove Putin.

The only explanation is that Russia can do what it wants as it's a permanent security council member and Poland isn't, which is why they can invade anyone with minimal consequences.
