It just got swallowed by Polish-lithuanian commonwealth, then Russia, and soviet union, but it fought for independence all of the time. Even kazakhs in the 17th century, and probably even earlier fought for freedom. It wasn't always Russia either. If you count it this way, it also belonged to Poland, Lithuania and Belarus. And maybe a few others. Very long time ago doesn't mean never. And no one is complaining about the USA, though it really never was a seperate country. And ukrainian langage isn't made on the basis of russian. Russians weren't really slavs. If some language came from the other one, it would be russian from ukrainian, but probably russian and ukrainian from proto-slavic. These are ssperate languages, I guess they simply evolved in the similar way because ukraine was a part of russia for 200years. Oh, I almost forgot. Russia oficially accepted Ukrainian borders. They are now fighting over something they agreed on. Your example with calofornia is not valid in any way, it is not the same. And please don't take this as an attack on Russia from my side. I really like Russia, and, in fact, am learning russian. I am just stating that Ukrane has a right to live.

The war is not over yet, and the tide has been turned to Russia has been making a lot of progress Ukraine still hasn't got any major victory but have been capturing small towns and villages and calling it a major victory, they haven't captured any big City or district, Ukraine is too flat and is easy to inavde that's just facts, I oppose the invasion and speak from a miltery perspective, and any war doesn't last for days but months and years I don't why people fail to understand that.
