I was so nervous for this game. I ran a quick lube shop and we had no customers at game time. normally i would have told my techs to find something to clean. That night I said 'come watch this game.' I wasn't alive in '72 but I like to think I did my part in 2010.

The Nash Goal 26:55 was just awesome. Malkin dances with the puck too long, Toews forces the turnover. Puck finds Richards's stick and all three Canadian forwards ACCELERATE. Especially Nash. Richards outlets it to Toews... Nash blows past two Russian backcheckers, receives the backhand pass from Toews and snipes it top cheese past Nabokov. Game, Set, Match.

I remember the lights going dark and Slash hits the first notes of Welcome to the Jungle, and the whole arena became so loud you lost hearing. And the crowd never stopped - it was soul crushing. Poor Russia was so rattled after a 3 minute goal, IIRC they had the NHL lineup, but they pulled their goalie early and started juggling lines. It was just a mess.

@@silentdream8702 Yea, tradition to play cleaner than the NHL like when they cheated the "no professional" rule back when pros weren't allowed by pretending to have an amateur team with regular day jobs when in reality they were a full time team that played hockey together year round. Or that whole big doping scandal which has caused Russia to be banned from the Olympics. It's funny when Russians try to say other people don't play fairly at the Olympics.
@silentdream8702
@silentdream8702 3 жыл бұрын
@@brianhum8765 that's not my point. I do not deny doping usage or violation of "no professional" rule. But this is not related to the fact that in the USSR it was customary to play less contact hockey. And for such a rough game, Canadians would receive penalties according to Soviet rules.

the problem with russia is that they are all goal scorers except datsyuk and malkin. thats all they know how to do is score. canada has many players who are one of the top point scorers on their teams but can take on a different roles when they arent counted on to score. on this team, bergeron can be a shutdown guy, richards could win clutch faceoffs, toews can be the first guy back on the backcheck, crosby can be the guy who gets all the attention to make room for everyone else. everyone on canada can play a different role that a team needs. on russia, everyone tries to score.
@Relbl
@Relbl 10 жыл бұрын
That is fair to say, but I'd say in contrast that Russia has the players to do better at least, but that their coaching is shit. None of the hacks they dig up is qualified to coach a major junior club in Canada, and so they don't know how to use the talent. If they bit the bullet and managed to lure a top Canadian coach they could be taken VERY seriously again. As it is, they are definitely a 2nd tier national squad now, along with the Swiss and Americans.
@scottwill19
@scottwill19 10 жыл бұрын
i also agree. the coaching decisions that bilyaletdinov and bykov did in both olympics are completely mind boggling. like seriously? one of you goalies gets a shutout and you play the cold goalie in an elimination game the next night in 2014? and in 2010 you pull nabokov after SIX goalies instead of after the first period? who in russia is paying these guys? xD

The thing with Russian players is that they a majority of them seem to individual players and don't work well as a team. Ovechkin for example is one of the best goal scorers in the world but if you don't have a great passer like Backstrom feeding him, he won't score and that why Russia always looses in Olympics becaause they only have shooters, expect from one or two players. Some Russian players can get away with just dangling and shooting in the NHL or KHL but when it gets to international level the other teams are just to solid

This game was expected to be more then it was. Russia was a frightening scoring powerhouse. Speed and skill highlighted through out the roster. Canada had the magic weapon for this... a super strong D. And Canada took advantage of the weakness that was the Russian D.

Beating America for Gold was fairly sweet, but there is just something about beating the Russians that is 100x sweeter. That it was an elimination game and we embarrassed them when many predicted Russia as favoured to win Gold made it 100x sweeter still! I can still remember how insanely jacked our office was as we saw the third goal (of course all work stopped after the Getzlaf made it 1-0).

I think Stamkos, Richards and Giroux etc can play wing fairly easily...especially near elite passers like Crosby or Toews. I'm more or less concerned of our goaltending...now that Brodeur is too old all we have left is Price and maybe Smith. (Perhaps I'm underrating Luongo and Fleury, but I just don't see them as the consistent type)
@Relbl

@spyzah What game were you watching? Canada could've potted 4 or 5 easily but Miller was standing on his head; all America got was a fluky tip from Kes and a late scramble with six on the ice that Luongo still almost got. America leaned on their goalie and almost came up with a miracle, but no one with eyes or knows a thing about hockey could say America out-played them in the final. Even in the round-robin game, it was Brodeur letting in softies that won it for America, not out-playing per se

At least you've gotten medals some medals. And there are very skilled players from Slovakia.

All I have to say, this is a match up that SHOULD'VE been the Gold medal game (US-CAN was amazing though) but I hope it would Canada and Russia in Sochi 2014. USA and Russia aren't a primary matchup (people reference "Miracle on ice") like CAN-RUS rivalry because it goes all the way back (1972 Summit series is always epicly known and also the intense World Jr. fight back in '87).

Lets share.....Canada had only 3 goals against in the entire tournament in Sochi.....Russia scored more goals on the Canadians in this single game....then all of the teams combined in Sochi......Amazing.......Only 3 goals against.....Hockey dominance....I THINK SO!

Plus in terms of skill level between Canada and Russia, Canada is more of an all around team, where as Russia is mostly offense based, you can't compare teams who play the game differently.

It's not like Slovakia doesn't have potential. Their game against us (Canada) was really close and exciting. :D
