In Ireland we celebrate Halloween more than other countries. Halloween originates from Ireland. The Americans have popularised it by using pumpkins to carve, but the original Irish holiday was and still is celebrated by carving turnips. For Christmas in America, from my experience, I can sum it up with a word -- stress. Some years it's like the holiday that never ends. You have to plan and prepare gifts and food for a month leading up to the holiday. Then there are more Christmas parties that you are invited to than you can count on one hand. Company Christmas parties, Christmas parties with friends, Christmas meal with family for my mom, Christmas meal with family for my dad (my parents are divorced), Christmas with husband's family on the other side of the country, and everyone usually celebrates a Christmas meal and celebration with their immediate family at home. By the time to get to New Years, I always feel burnt out and stressed. It takes a lot of planning and coordination with others to make it work. It takes a lot of energy to travel here and there and everywhere to see everyone. Everyone expects you to be present for the celebration or you will be shamed. This last Christmas season was the best since COVID cancelled all the parties accept the one at home with immediate family. I made Beef Wellington from scratch. Yes, life is hard for us spoiled Americans.

In Poland the most important day is the evening of the 24th December. In the past it was a good tradition not to eat any meat on that day, only fish and vegetables. And you had to have at least 12 dishes. Most popular were 'pierogi' (with cabbage and mushrooms). Also some herring dishes and the most important - a live carp (not any more as we've got a lot of greenpeace lovers now). Also some salads like the olivers salad you described. This is also the day when Santa Claus is coming to us and leaves the gifts to the children under the Christmas tree. Later there was a mass at midnight (however it is less and less popular now). And the new year is a time to party with friends and usually a lot of vodka. Of course we also drink Champagne at midnight (at least the ones that ale still capable of). The cheapest & most popular is SOVETSKOE IGRISTOE - yes it is a Russian champagne-like drink - only it is produced in Polish Radom :) We also are part of the 'home alone' traditional Christmas movie - only it is ran in Poland on the 24 December.

In Australia we celebrate Christmas and new year, Christmas is either a roast turkey, or ham with salads and prawns. Alot of people celebrate on the beach. We also celebrate boxing on the 26th of December with a famous cricket game that starts on that day and a yacht race across the ocean to Tasmania. New years eve is lots of fireworks and basically everyone gets drunk.

So I just decided to check out your first video and it is surprising how many similarities there are between Polish Christmas celebration traditions and Russian new year. Also, in Poland Olivier salad is known as sałatka jarzynowa or veggie salad and eaten on celebrations like these(I couldn't find perfect translation, jarzyna means one year plants which can be eaten raw. Quite specific, I know). Not to mention mandarines, old pop music shows(for new year) and all home alone films broadcasted only in this time of the year. It is mind boggling how much the old union unified our cultures. However, in Poland we have a lot of our own traditions, too many to list in a comment.

In Germany Christmas and New Year are two completely different holidays. Christmas starts with Christmas Eve on December 24th - it is also called "the holy night", beause - after gregorian calender - this was the night when christ was born. On Christmas Eve, people gather around the christmas tree at home with the family. They sing or make music together. When it gets dark outside, candles get lighted, and we have some traditional pastry for tea time called "Christstollen" and "Plätzchen" (cookies and gingerbread). After that we exchange christmas presents which are being placed under the christmas tree. Later in the evening people usually have a rather simple meal just like fish or potatoe salad with sausages. After dinner we often play some games or just chat or have some fun. Religious people get ready for the church to attend midnight vespres. Christmas Eve is followed by the two Christmas Days on December 25th and 26th. Both days are national holidays on which people don't have to go to work. These days are solely for the family. People visit each other, bring some presents and they have very opulent feasts with roasted turkey, goose or deer. Traditionally in Germany roast comes with Rotkraut - red Cabbage. That's also why we are known as Krauts - we simply love Kraut :-D On the two Christmas Days, in Germany there are often christmas concerts scheduled in churches and concert halls, which I love very much to attend since one thing that transports the spirit of christmas just amazingly is music. I love going to church too on christmas, even though I am not a religious person and so are 40 percent of the germans. I just like the spirit there. Christmas is my most favorite holiday of the year, since it is all designed to make you slow down, come to rest, celebrate love and have some nice time with your family. It's a time that makes me reflect on life and be thankful for what I have. It literally lights up the darkest time of the year (at least for people living in the northern hemisphere) and spreads some hope for brighter days. But in fact, "christmas" in Germany even starts much earlier - with the first advent at the beginning of december. In these four weeks before christmas, city centers, streets, gardens and flats and windows are being decorated with lights, nutcrackers and christmas trees. And there are christmas markets everywhere. A very traditional christmas item in many parts of Germany is the christmas pyramid, some sort of carousel with wings made of wood, that rotates powered by the heat of candles. New Year in Germany is called Silvester. We celebrate into new year from new years eve on December 31st. People give parties at home or attend huge events. In many cities there is a central party arranged which people can attend. In my hometown Dresden this takes place on Theatre Square in front of Semper Opera. At Midnight the new year is welcomed by an impressive 15 minute long firework. I never attend this event, since i do not like driving into town on new years eve. The air is filled with noise and the smog of firecrackers, many drunk people are on the streets throwing them around inconsiderately. I usually flee the turmoil for a retreat on a quiet island at the baltic sea.

In the US we celebrate Christmas and New Year's Eve. But in terms of celebrations and parties and traditions, Christmas is celebrated way more than New Year's because of the Christmas music, movies, shows, parties, decorations and family get-togethers. New Year's Eve is more a celebration with friends and co-workers to get together for drinking and watching fireworks! Every place has unique traditions. But generally speaking, this is how we celebrate the two.

In Canada, Christmas (Dec 25) is the day you spend with your family, the day people exchange gifts for etc. Most families have turkey for dinner, with stuffing and potatoes, carrots, turnip, cranberry sauce. On the east coast where I'm from we usually visit extended family (usually at our grandparents, mother's side for half the night, fathers side for half the night). It's also common that there's lots of different kinds of sweets, and baking going on. Another tradition we have that I think is maybe more specific to where I'm from is that we might have lobster on Christmas eve or on boxing day (dec 26). New Year's Eve is the day people usually party. Some people spend it with their families too, and people usually drink on Christmas as well, but people don't exchange gifts on New Year's Eve, and the atmosphere is more party like, and many people just go out to the bars.

About her request at the end I can just say, that in Bulgaria the traditions are almost the same with the small difference that we celebrate Christmas (Коледа) as the Catolics on 24-25 of December (but usually the young people are going at parties) and Snegurachka is called Snezhanka (Снежанка).
@hristog823 жыл бұрын
New year traditions in Bulgarian family are exactly, exactly the same as Russian. That is because of our common 45 years communist past. We also had Дед Мороз till 1989 and till then Christmas was also forbidden. After the fall of communism we started to celebrate Christmas, Santa Claus (Дядо Коледа) appears, and Christmas turns to be the most important one.

С новым годом 2021! By the way, your discussion about Santa Claus & Coca-Cola reminds me of the fact that the Santa Claus character (and the red color associated with it) is an invention made by Coca-Cola in ~ 1931, based on Saint Nicholas. In France we tend to celebrate more the New year, but we celebrate Christmas too (and it's where children receive gifts, etc.). But these become more and more "commercial-like holidays". Schools take holidays for the whole period of Chirstmas + new-year.

Just saw this video from last year. It was interesting. I have seen videos of the beautiful decorations in Moscow and they are lovely. The room where you made this video is beautifully decorated as is your sweater. In the USA Christmas is by far the biggest holiday of the year (even for some non-Christians) There are lots of pre-parties with friends and then on December 24 and/or 25 the day is usually devoted to family with too much food and too many gifts. Indoor and outdoor decorations go up in November or early December. Lots of traditional movies and holiday music on TV and radio. Best time of year. Lots of parties with friends for New Years eve. Too much to drink.

It's a bit late but Xmas (Christmas) and New Year in New Zealand share equal popularity. Christmas Eve is also very popular where folks visit the pub or cafes to meet up with friends that also live out of town. The NZ Xmas is most closely associated with an English-style Christmas and it's all about giving the kids presents, and the whole family getting together. We eat ham and roast beef and of course Pavlova with whipped cream and kiwifruit! NZ and Oz argue over who invented it but it's very popular in both countries. New Year is a summer holiday in NZ and it's all about the bonfire on the beach on the Eve and singing songs and having a good time. A lot of headaches the next day! It's different but also great to have Xmas and New Year during summertime. The shops "frost" their windows to make it seem like snow : )

In Norway the period before New Years Eve is the most important celebration. Christmas markets before Christmas are important in our country. Else Christmas last to the middle of Jan in Norway. 13th or 20th day. Christmas Eve we celebrate in our homes. Family parties from 1st Christmas day. The children have their own parties after New Years Eve. Then we light up our private gardens until March because of the dark period during winter. Lucia celebration in Sweden is very beautiful to watch 13th Dec. In Norway I watched one in the church. But mostly the children celebrate Lucia. All religions celebrate 24th Dec. in Norway. We also have a lot of Christmas concerts, culture events in Nov and Dec.

In Canada we have lots of beautiful decorations in the public areas. We have nice displays of coloured lights in homes and many people have natural trees in their homes or apartments. We open gifts from under the tree on Christmas day and we often attend religious celebations only once a year, on Christmas eve. We eat tons of heavy food on Christmas day and always have leftover turkey and pies. We gain weight and then try to lose it after the New Year. That is Christmas jin Montreal!

In Czech Republic the most important day of Christmas is 24th December, we have a family dinner (potato salad+fried fish, usually carp), exchange gifts which are placed under the Christmas tree by Baby Jesus and watch fairytales (Three nuts for Cindirella) and a movie Cozy Dens (1999), it's about several families in Prague and Russian invasion to our country in 1968, it's a bitter sweet comedy, it became a Christmas tradition in our country, it's on tv every year :-D

Baby Jesus brings your Christmas gifts!? That's awesome! I'm American. Santa Claus is really more important than Jesus on Christmas here. If Jesus brought our presents that problem would be solved!
