Russian Civil War: The Central Powers attack

During the Russian Civil War the Central Powers launched a military operation to occupy some territories of the former Russian Empire. There was no Russian army to oppose them, so everything went as planned.

No one talks about this part of ww1, All we learned in school was that the russians gave up their western lands in a peace deal. This is very interesing. I guess disbanding your entire army mid war is a bad move :3

It was the only move. There had already been a revolution against the Tsar in 1917, the february revolution. This was successful but that government continued fighting in WW1. The reds now were the only ones who promised to stop the participation in the war and disband the army, had they not done it, another revolution would have been on the horizon.

To tidbit about "Polish corps" - The author doesn't explain what they were but for me they possessed interesting (ea)story. They were originally founded as supporting units for Austro-Hungarian army but with conquest of "Polish Kingdom" German commanders made plans of setting up puppet state to hold the eastern front for them as much of Polish population failed to be mobilized by the Russians. They expanded and equipped Polish units in preparation for construction of national army but that had double loyalities. These Polish units were idea created by Piłsudski who correctly predicted the outcome of the war before it had happened (the breakdown of Russian state but corresponding Austro-German defeat) . After overthrow of the Tsar Polish units rebelled and crossed the border to join up with then (after carte blanche from Russian February government) forming in Russia units. They put up some fight against German invasion but were more decimated by rising Ukrainian masses

In german literature this "battle" is often described as a "weird" war or the "railway" war because from the german POV they simply loaded a few troops on a train, drove to the next train station, declared that place captured, left a handful of soliders and carried on. It alowed them to capture such a vast area in basically no time at all and the actual combat was very light (by comparisson to the rest of WW1). There were cases were some towns were pretty much captured and occupied by no more then a platoon/Squad of soldiers do to effectively no resistance. Continuing the war after they took over was by far the dumbest decision of the reds ever, it cost millions of lifes long term. They would have propably lost less by jsut giving Germany everything it wanted earlier. The main goal of the germans was after all the natural ressources and food of the Russian Empire to continue the war in the west, a collaborating soviet gouvernmeant and some territorial loses (baltics, belarus and half of ukraine) as a buffer area would have statisifed the germans for the time...they needed all their troops in the west after all for their spring offensive. On the other hand, continuing the war forced the germans to leave a lot of troops in the east for occupation duty which significantly contributed to germany losing the big war later on as every soldier was badly needed on the western front.

The Soviets didn't decide to 'continue fighting'. Trotsky was just an i d i o t who basically declared that there was 'no state of war or peace' between the Soviets, Germany, and Austria-Hungary. The Central Powers, who he was supposed to be negotiating with at the time he made that declaration, were baffled. And then they ended the armistice and launched their offensive overruning Western Russia.

Something I don't understand. Where does the Treaty of Brest-Letovsk figure into all of this? According to Wikipedia: "With the German Army just 85 miles (137 km) from the Russian capital Petrograd (St. Petersburg) on 3 March 1918, the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed and the Eastern Front ceased to be a war zone." So, how could the Reds still be legally putting up a defense against the Central powers after that March 3rd date?

​@@Eastory I would be very interested, though that is partly because the Italian front is special to me as I had a great uncle who fought and died in Italy and is buried there. You could expand it out to include all of southern europe in the last phase of the war to capture more interest. Including the fall of italy, the basically unopposed southern naval invasion of France, what was going on in Greece and the Balkans (specifically more info on Yugoslavia as Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria were covered a bit in the eastern front video), also the occupation of southern Germany and Austria and how some Nazis held out in place down there after the fall of Berlin.
