Love the animations and level of detail. The amount of movement of the fronts in such a short time is baffling. In the UK, our schools teach us about the stagnant northern parts of the western front 1914-'18, giving us next to no idea of the conflicts in the wider world and the years following. Hope to see you with 100k subs by the end of the year, so I can say "I was there in the beginning!"

This victory, albeit great for estonia at the time, would only be a phyrric victory that wouldnt last. For less than 20 years...unfortunately. 15:50 It was a critical error not to have supported and pushed the advantage the whites had and take petrograd. It may have weakened the bolshevik position significantly in favor of the whites. Imagine what a difference a Single well equipped French, British or American division might have made at this critical juncture. If the entente countries had made a concerted effort to defeat the reds when they had the chance, much would have been different to the benefit of eastern Europe and the world. Communism may have been finished right there and then. But unfortunately that is not what happened, and this small victory would only remain a phyrric victory as the Soviets would over the next 2 decades gradually gain total supremacy and domination over all of eastern Europe and indeed half the world. the iron curtain and the veil of communism would descend over half the world.

@@livethefuture2492 It doesn't matter what flag Russia would be under, the baltic states along with Poland would have been subjugated regardless. Then a Cold war between the US and Russia would commence just for economical reasons.
@tormfury7376
@tormfury7376 Жыл бұрын
@@livethefuture2492 Pyrrhic victory - a success that brings such significant harm to the victor that it differs little from defeat. This was not one of those. You, sir, need to work on your understanding of the vocabulary you use. Estonia lost little and gained a whole lot in this war, first among those being statehood, something the people of Estonia had never had before, as when they were first subjugated to foreign power through the northern crusades 700 years prior they had been little more than loosely aligned groups of finnic tribes. Much the same can be said about the Latvians, with the difference that they were baltic rather than finnic. Secondly, RSFSR was forced to absolve all of Imperial Russian debt and to pay Estonians an awful lot of gold on top of that. Thirdly RSFSR had to make further concessions relating to land and forest exploitation and construction of infrastructure. Now, I can see why you might consider it a critical error for the rest of the world that the whites were not supported in taking Petrograd. However it was most certainly NOT an error from the point of view of the Baltic states. In fact, this is precisely why Estonia REFUSED to contribute more forces towards that undertaking and rushed towards making peace ASAP (to the chagrin of most of Entente), and rather than Leon Trotsky being a beast organizing defense, there was simply no motivation to achieve success. The officers in the white movement were mostly great russian chauvinists. The separatists were convinced that if the whites were successful in taking Petrograd and with that greatly increased the morale of the entire white movement, and with that possibly being propelled to winning the civil war... then the people seeking independence would have NEVER been allowed to remain free. Yes, the Northern Core/Northwestern Army had signed an agreement to not pursue such an eventuality.. however russians were about as trustworthy back then as they are now. Furthermore the white movement was loosely aligned and didn't have a real leader. Northwestern Army was but a small fraction of the whites, and agreements signed by them wouldn't have mattered to others. Add to this that the separatist would have had no help from the Entente, even if it would have meant weakening Russia for some time, as all of those were imperialist colonial powers - rather than helping, and through doing so fostering thoughts of independence in their own colonial subjects, they would have sympathized with the whites instead. And while the independence of Estonia and Latvia before being illegally occupied didn't last an awful long, it laid the groundwork for working towards regaining independence and further legitimized it. Without having this victory and without having a memory of ever being independent they would have ended up like all the other ethnic minority republics, very much stuck with russia, being used as the source of cheap cannon fodder for the front lines while their culture and identity are being erased - or like Chechnya. As pointed out before, the white movement was headed by great russian chauvinists. Much like the russia of today, waging its bullshit special education operation in Ukraine. Whether communism were defeated there makes no difference for Eastern Europe, because it wouldn't have defeated russian imperialism. They'd have continued to be expansionist, and would have made much the same conclusions about the state of their infrastructure and industrialization as the commies did. So instead of the Soviet Union the nazies would have clashed with imperial russia. And while the fighting over the spread of communism all over the world has been the source of much human suffering, consider this - without an anathema in the Soviet Union and the arms race against it and the many many conflicts over communism we potentially wouldn't have the USA of today with all of its military might and expertise, while we would potentially have a much stronger russia staring down the rest of the world. And that would be a russia without its current corruption problem, as much of the way it is corrupt today directly stems from the mindset people developed in the Soviet Union.

As you can see from the unit description from the link in the description it is the shield of the Talinn Defence Battalion: drive.google.com/file/d/1h03bzTXRMJmfoF78ExFizBjfPsGRzrLB/view However, there is a good reason for your confusion. "Talinn" in fact means "The Danes City" and the Danish flag actually derives from the Danish crusades against the pagans in Estonia in the beginning of the 13th century. Legend has it that the Danish flag ("Dannebrog") fell from the sky during a battle close to modern day Talinn, and it has been our flag ever since. As you can see here Talinn shares various coats of arms with us Danish due to that: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Tallinn

Mstislaw AA - The Finnish in Heimosodat were volunteers, not conscriped by the army of country. I bet that the Russian Whites were not all there by volunteering. Or were they? And also, Mannerheim did have (in 1919) a plan to help out Russian whites against kommunist by helping them to capture Petrograd if Ru-whites would have agreed on Suomis (Finlands) independence. And remember that the Russian whites did lost the Ruski Civil war.

@Egert Roos I can`t say, really. Did it achieved its purpose? Did it became independant? Any reasonable action started from purpose, then a tools to achieve this purpose, then correction with outcome and than curcle connects untill purpose reached. I believe, Estonian people(as any other in any other time) just wanted their culture to be preserved and developed, have freedoms and improvement of life. Nothing new. The question is, how it can be achieved the best way possible. By Agressive actions toward empire that conquered them centuries ago, using moment of of this empire weakness? Maybe it was indeed a best way, but history proved, it not worked. They left only when empire itself let them go. Here in Russia, we have more than 100 nations inside.They are both included into country and have their cultures preserved. This is a bad way for them? They are enslaved? I not say Estonians were wrong in their desires. But MAYBE they choosed a wrong tools to achieve them. Mongolia stayed independant untill USSR destruction. Tuva joined USSR in 1946 only. In a really peacful lway. They were a Puppet States? Estonia was not? Or had a different pupeteers? Fight for independance can have different forms. I believe, hostility toward USSR were not a best policies for Poland and Baltia republics. I believe they become hostile, because untill late 193s they saw USSR as an easy pray. Otherwise invasion of Finnish troops in USSR in 192s not seems as sane move. I bet Mannerham was not insane. So, returning to You question, I would say - estonians fought for their indepandance in a wrong way. In a suicidal way. It was not rational.

@@slicemf5347 Estonia chose the right way. Bolshevik power grab in October 1917 was illegal, therefore Soviet Russia lacked legal continuity with the Russian Empire. aren berberian Surely Estonians fought their own war which they successfully won, but would the Poles have lost the main war with the Soviets then the Estonians and other Baltic states would have not won their independence, as they were only a region in the Soviet Union before and would not have been able to fight the Soviets if those weren’t fully concentrated in the west. They therefore relied greatly on how well the war was going for their allies outside of their country

Well, fighting the Germans did not mean fighting against regular German army troops. The German troops in Latvia were volunteers and since the political situation in Germany was not so clear at the time as well, the commander of the troops did not have full backing of the German government for everything he did. Some insane long-term goal of those troops was even to be prepared to join in a retaking of Germany itself and overthrowing the post-war government. So basically a German equivalent for the Russian White Army with the goal to reestablish monarchy.

F.C. Laukhard now listen here,you can talk all the smack that you want about how the germans or soviets could have crushed the estonians if they really tried,but they fucking didn't so it doesn't matter that maybe they could have. Hej Martin, I am sorry that you felt that I somehow tried to diminish the Estonian success. In fact, I did not say that the Germans would have crushed the Estonians if they tried, my point was more that the German government did not even necessarily WANT to crush the Estonians. I just wanted to clarify the facts and if that somehow came out the wrong way, I am sorry. I did not mean it the way you understood me but seeing as a lot of people on youtube do like to talk smack, I can totally understand how you might think that but again, I think at that time, even regular troops would probably not have been quite successful because the Germans did not have that many anyways (remember after WWI the German Army was limited to 100.000 soldiers and also had restrictions to equipment. Additionally, Estonia was not easily reachable for supplies from Germany and Germany had bigger problems at the time). So I am perfectly fine with saying that I think the Estonians would have been able to overcome even regular troops. I hope you see now that it was merely to clarify things that I wrote what I wrote and of course you should be proud of your ancestors risking a lot and succeeding albeit not for very long until the Soviets occupied you for a longer time. But the way you broke away from the Soviet Union was also very impressive (well, I did not know it at the time for I was just born but I have visited the Lauluväljak when I traveled your beautiful country and liked country and people very much). So stay proud and for now, enjoy your weekend. ;)

F.C. Laukhard Thank you for the kind response and clarification. I am sorry if i came off a bit rude,but lots of keyboard warriors try and talk down the success of our boys and i thought you were another one so I became slightly aggressive. The germans didn't indeed try their best to get at us,but even if they did come with bigger forces I think that we would have had a big shot at winning since hundreds of years of serfdom and rule by the germans really cultivated in our blood so when we finally got the chance to fight back and really let 'em have it,even old men rushed over to fight. It was an oppurtunity of a life time for most folks. I remember reading about a comment made by one british naval officer(the brits supplied us with weapons and protected us at sea) that despite their help,without a fighting spirit,we would have lost the war regardless. Where are you from anyway?

Awesome video.! I'm from Poland so the only version of the war against the Soviets I knew was from Polish perspective. And I must admit Estonian war against the Soviets was also very interesting. Thank you for the video and thank you Estonians for your sacrifice against the communism.

Renunciation of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Russia was the term of Armistice of Compiègne. Russia just couldn't dissolve it because the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was not valid after 11 November 1918. Russian move back to the territory belonged to Russia on on 1 August 1914 was the part of the agreement in Compiègne as well. How can you call that "foreign agression"? Always learn basic facts about the case before sharing your opinion and you'll never look silly.

Just discovered these comments 4 years later, what I ment by Russian civil War at the time was the era and the set of conflicts that arrises from the collapse of the Russian civil War, not that this conflict was a civil War.

@Nordic Alliance Id like to guess he did, the war was a real mess - friends, brothers were forced to fight with eachother on opposite sides, lots of desertions from units and sides not opening fire on eachother. There are no winners in war, everyone loses.
