I think my first realization about Russia's Propaganda Machine was during the F-35 development. I've never seen so much negatively for a single fighter aircraft program. Every time a faulty part was discovered, Every time they could find some self proclaimed "expert" voicing concerns of the program, every time there was a delay, or any reason, every time a test or flight did not go as planned, every time anyone in the program made some sort of common mistake, it was put on a megaphone and blasted out on the internet. And the names pushing the information started to pop up more and more, Sputnik Blog, or Russian Times came up a lot, with several clout chasing "News" sites effectively copying and pasting their idiotic talking points. They really tried to get us to cancel this jet. Im glad we (mostly) ignored them.

I agree. That just shows how much they didn't want that project completed. They have some good videos on the KZbin channel Sandboxx about the F-35 and just how good it's turned out to be.

I would also argue that they did the same back when the internet was in its early years. Whenever the AR-15 platform was mentioned, it was always trashed as an "unreliable" weapon that always jammed frequently, how the 5.56mm was a cartridge only meant to "wound the enemy", how the AK-47 was the "best in the world and can still function after being rolled over by a tank" and that the 7.62x39mm was a "cartridge meant for killing". Hence why in zombie media and the community always featured American characters with AKs rather than the more common AR-15 (thanks Max Brooks, freaking hack).

What makes it so tricky to address is that these campaigns can be so compelling to vulnerable people that they will fully believe it and start repeating these false narratives in a seemingly organic way. Community notes can be a good tool in combating that, but fact checkers are outnumbered for now. I think we should train a neural network to identify the fingerprints of disinformation campaigns and act on it in real time. It's important to keep it neutral, though. Such automated system shouldn't become politicized.

I remember the comments from that China firewall video. A lot were pretty transparent but yeah. There’s another channel I like that basically just takes vintage footage from the 1920’s etc and colourises it. Once they put up footage from Tibet. No comments or statements, just footage from back in the 1920’s or 30’s. Usually that channel might get ten or so comments a video. This one was flooded with random users going on about how the people in the video (wearing traditional Tibetan clothes, monasteries, celebrations etc) were all nobles and lives privileged lives while oppressing common people who starved to death and how things were so much better now. It was a really weird overreaction to such a small thing.

I feel like cyber attacks would ensure mutually assured destruction for everyone except North Korea. Attacking utilities and hospitals is just too easy for states to do, so a cyber war would just result in all participants being without electricity, clean water, and other basic necessities.

I think I'm actually more infuriated by this than the actual shooting war... and I mean that on both sides. Firstly, the west and in particular the US, has long known both Russia's capabilities and it's aims yet it steadfastly refuses to even lift a finger to fight back in any meaningful way. The west possesses the capability to utterly destroy Russia's critical infrastructure beyond repair yet it does nothing about these repeated attacks beyond some pathetic and purely symbolic protest. Secondly, the same west and the same US possesses the the resources and the ability to completely safeguard its vital systems and infrastructure but it refuses to spend the money to do so or have the guts to compel its corporations to do likewise. I'm infuriated at Russia for doing this but I'm even more infuriated at our own authorities for letting it happen.

The problem is the USA is a Democratic nation dominated equally by two major parties - and one of said major parties has been directly benefiting from Russia's cyberwarfare campaigns on the west and the disinformation Russia spreads in its own interests for at least a decade now. Additionally, the world view and ideology that governs said party is the same world view and ideology that Putin himself has. So you CANNOT get the Republicans to provide bipartisan support to take a hard stand against Russian cyberwarfare because they'd never win an election again once the waters are demudified and people see them and their policies for what they are.

Thank you for making a video about this topic. I believe this is one of the most threatening issue our society is facing today. We already have pretty impressive cyber warfare capabilities; the US is the leader (being as they actually own the IP of all the tech used). The Russian attacks are generally all brute force or human subversion - pretty unsophisticated. Excellent video, if not a worrying one. As someone who’s been in and out of the hospital, the hacking of hospitals is especially scary, since everything in hospitals is done on or through computers. I sincerely hope that the government and companies are beefing up their online security. I have a sinking feeling though, that places like hospitals, are far behind in online security compared to international companies and the government. Definitely something to worry about!

Anything medical is incredibly far behind in cyber security, from my experience. They don't view it as a necessary expense (and do very little training or enforcement on the basics like locking your computer when you walk away, strong passwords that aren't taped to your monitor, identifying phishing attempts, etc) and also don't tend to view themselves as a priority target. That's one route a lot of personal information is stolen

It is very fascinating how the illusion of globalisation is spread. How people think every thing is accessible and in reality, they are living in their bubble closely guarded by their governments, like the people of the west. Only Americans hate Russia, and infact, love for Russians has increased throughout the world since 24 feb 2022 around the world. When Russia asked, oic cut down oil exports. When Russia asked, saudi started using brics currencies for exports. When Russia asked, china started a trade deal with Russia in which Russia exports more to china than imports. When Russia asked, india started to by their oil from Russia over the market cap, and so did china. Iran gave them cheap labor and drones that could have taken a lot of manpower to produce in Russia. Belarusians are letting Russia use their lands. Kazaks are letting them by western electronics through them. I do watch cnn and bbc sometimes and its amazing the amount of propaganda they throw at people showing everything is going perfectlyfor west and terrible for Russia, whats more amazing is that people are believing in it. You can't just simply isolate a country as large and influential as Russia, they aren't cuba. If everything was indeed going as smooth as tgey say, Russian economy wouldn't grow by 2.4 percent, they wouldn't be building military bases in cuba and orchestrating cues all over Africa, making Russian version of arab spring in Africa

To win the occupation you need 1 troop per 20 people and those troops need to be stationed in country for as long as you intend to hold the land. So after driving out a whole bunch of their motivated, intelligent and affluent (more than 0.5 million at last estimate) citizens. Killing at least 25,000 of them and wounding another 100,000, Russia is going to have to give up the use of over 2 million troops on permanent occupation duty. This is above and beyond the troops they already have for internal security in Russia and these will all be working age men, who are needed to become fathers of the next generation of Russians. So after blowing a hole in the heart of the nation bigger than what was blown by the Zinky boys of Afghanistan, after crippling a whole raft of people and giving the rest a nice cast of PTSD, and driving off the smart and successful, who will work the factories, raise the next generation, and provide the economy on which Russia depends? Russia has already lost, even if they find a way to have a propaganda "win."

Cyber warfare is one of a range of new(-ish) and increasingly recognised methods of engaging in the opposite side without firing a literal bullet - or as part of what gets sometimes referred to as "hybrid warfare". Russia is far from the only country to employ it, with the US having also famously employed this against Iran's nuclear programme. Other forms of these new battlespaces include information warfare (e.g. propaganda particularly when employed outside their own country), economic warfare (e.g. international sanctions, blockades, etc), and soft power (e.g. developing cultural influence on other countries, particularly in third party states, to favour one's own country) I think it would be really interesting if Warographics did videos on these topics too!

Disinformation and exploiting divisions in society is a big problem in the West, Russia or not. The only reliable way is ending online anonymity with mass surveillance of inbound and outbound communications, or to directly use Russia's tactics against them. Otherwise, your other next option is to turn the cyberwar into a physical one and make Russia back down through the use of physical violence.

As someone in and out of the hospital constantly, a cyber attack on a hospital in the US (particularly large advanced ones) could make that hospital completely paralyzed. Cyber attack on a hospital is so damn easy because their security is laughable. Identify patients, ordering and administering medications, drawing up patients charts including what meds they are on or are allergic to, as well as all insurance information. All are done on computers. All could be messed with easy peasy.

It's also considered one of the most simplistic forms of cyber warfare possible, as it doesn't really require any real technical expertise, it's literally just flooding the server with so many pings/requests that it essentially freezes up and jams. It's less technical even than brute forcing a password, as with that you at least need to get the hash somehow. DDoS theoretically takes some skill to assemble the large network of zombie computers that you'll use, but once you've got that in place, it's literally just tell everything to ping the server all at once

I think it's because they rather focus their efforts on espionage rather than doing flashy and news media attention catching cyber attacks as well as trying to intimidate countries. The effects of such attacks are usually short lived. It's much more valuable to hack a system and stay hidden there collecting intel.

When will cyber attacks be treated as acts of war? There has to be accountability for malicious actions (yes, even those that come from the US). If the international community makes the host countries responsible for what goes on in their country, maybe then there will be sufficient incentive to actually crack down on these people.

I am of the opinion that they have influence everywhere even in those so-called eco-activists that glue themselves onto the roads. Perhaps the activists might not be aware, but surely someone somewhere is funding them to cause trouble. We often see questions "why bother the ordinary people , why not go protest at the government buildings?", yet these 'activists' have no real answers. It constantly annoys me whenever anyone insists that the Democratic Party lost the 2016 election solely because of Russian misinformation. There were a great deal of other factors and issues that would go completely unaddressed if the people in power believe that's the case. There were frustrations over globalization, and the deindustrialization of America, perceived neglect of America's midwestern interior, an immigration crisis from Mexico that had been going on for decades longer than the European one, as well as anxieties over the threat of the Chinese Communist Party. There was also a growing isolationist sentiment that was stoked by shady, controversial wars in Afghanistan and Libya, as well as frustrations with Europe's poor defense spending and America's absurdly high military budget. The Democratic Party was the ruling party during all of this, and Donald Trump's crass nature wasn't enough to keep them in power. The Russian email hack was just icing on a really shit cake for the Democratic party. Russia didn't "hack the election," they merely inflamed political frustration that was already there.
