Russian defences slowing counter-offensive, says Ukraine general - BBC News

The general in charge of Ukraine's counter-offensive in the south has said Russian defences are making it difficult for military equipment, including Western tanks and armoured vehicles, to move forward.
Gen Oleksandr Tarnavskyi said his forces are struggling to overcome multi-layered minefields and fortified defensive lines.
It comes as Russia’s president Vladimir Putin confirmed there's been “intensified” fighting in southern Ukraine.

The mine strategy is working for the Russians and they're not going to stop, they're going to do more. A slow counteroffensive will give them enough time to think out more strategies to repel the counteroffensive even more. I think maybe Bakmut's long war was used as a strategy by the Russians to give them enough time to plant all these mines and Ukraine didn't just see it.

For heavens sake, send them some air support ! The UK has tons of mothballed older equipment that with a bit of training the Ukrainians could put into good use. I'm thinking of Lynx Combat Helicopters, F4 Phantom Jets (300 retired by RAF 2 years ago).... Lets not be complacent, if Ukraine loses this war then Russia wil be a serious threat to Europe, UK and the western world for generations. But If Ukraine wins then the threat will be contained. Apart from the fact that supporting Ukraine is the right thing to do. We in the UK really need a Ukraine victory for our own peace and prosperity.

A main counter-offensive without air power or air-to-ground support will never happen. All the Patients and Time will not help until someone in the high command returns to the chalkboard and starts to rethink their strategy. As much as I want to see Ukraine succeed, without before, as mentioned, they're going nowhere fast, and they are going to suffer much more life loss than they can afford. At this point, Russia can quickly stop any counter-offensive through pure attrition.

This is why it was a stupid decision not to supply Ukraine with the air power when they received the western tanks, all ground units need air cover no matter how advanced. I think best case scenario for Ukraine this year will be they take Tokmak or worst case they loose all their gains and get pushed even further back. Either way there will be enormous losses which could have been avoided.

If you lose more than your enemy and you dont have enough people to keep the ground you supposedly gained you achieved nothing good but sacrificed your people for nothing in a war where you are already outnumbered. Also they most likely didnt break through anything but were allowed to move forward a bit so when the Russians started to use their artrillery the Ukranians couldnt get back to safety in time. Ukraine need peace. The focus should be on saving their lives and not throwing away to achieve nothing.

I think people expected a counter attack to be a massive wave of attacks across a massive front. In reality, considering your enemy is bigger than you, you have to start small, poke the bear slowly and carefully until an opening appears. You then move into that opening and prep for a counter attack. You rinse and repeat this until you have a big enough hole to then dedicate large forces to. This will be slow , and eventually with the right tactics and effort they will get through. Their key objective should be to cut off the occupied territory from mainland Russia and scorch earth the place, every road destroyed, every railtrack. This will be slow basically, a rash push would be a catastrophe.

That's when they took Kherson, hostomel, the nuclear plant etc. They didn't take kyiv but they showed that fast movement is better than a war of attrition.Once they came to hault that's when they withdrew. Ukraine only needs to break through in one place and cut off Russian supply lines. They can do that anywhere along the Azov coast. They already have the railway at Tokmak within HIMARS range. All Russian rail supplies pass through either Tokmak or the Kerch Bridge. Both have been hit recently. Crimea IS going to fall.

Look I love the Ukrainians and their spirit. I cheer them on every chance I get and I would happily go over there as a volunteer Bradley mechanic (my old job in the Army) if I wasn't a broken disabled vet. But that being said. Without huge battalion attacks only small gains will be made, but they all count and are incredibly brave. I think both sides still using tactical groups. Massive minefields and limited air support adds to the challenge. Russia was firing 20,000 shells a day at Bakhmut, an enormous scale of modern warfare. Peace in Ukraine 🇬🇧✌️🇺🇦

So about the Ukrainan counter offensive being so slow. I get the disapointement we all wan't this to be over as fast as possible but Ukraine tried smashing through Russian defencive lines with tanks at the start of the counter offensive and it failled. Ukraine was left with tow options 1) Try again exacly the same way with more soldiers and equipment in the hope that THIS TIME it works. 2) Change tactics and adapt to reality They chose option 2 and concentrated on taking out Russian artiliry to make crossing the defensive lines safer. It will take longer but it will take more terraine and cost less lives

Yeah, only yesterday and only near a small village of Rabotino Zelenskyy wasted 22 tanks, 12 IFVs and hundreds of hapless Ukrainian conscripts, 18 conscripts were lucky enough to surrender. In these suicidal attacks since June 4 Zelenskyy managed to waste hundreds of tanks (including cutting-edge German Leopard 2A6s) and hundreds of armored vehicles (including Bradley) along with tens of thousands (at least 32 000 KIA) of hapless Ukrainian conscripts on the mine fields, hit by Russian artillery or anti-tank missiles without even getting to the first main line of Russian defense. Adding insult to injury Russians captured Leopard 2A6 and Bradley. Ukrainian army has always been poorly led and marred by political interference and pervasive corruption, but now when it lost almost all experienced soldiers every Zelenskyy operation turns into a wholesale slaughter of Ukrainian conscripts like in Bakhmut. Bakhmut was a slaughter which was entirely Zelenskyy folly as Stalingrad was entirely Hitler's folly. Zelenskyy just for media hype wasted on average 500 troops daily (total tally was at least 51 000 KIA) in Bakhmut meat grinder even when all escape routes came under Russian fire control and this debacle turned into a sheer slaughter of Ukrainian troops. But obsessed with Bakhmut Zelenskyy didn't stop even at that. Since May 20 when Russians took Bakhmut General Syrsky (Zelenskyy minion) launched wave after wave of suicidal counterattacks failing to retake a single village near Bakhmut while wasting thousands upon thousands of hapless Ukrainian conscripts.
