Not chess. Chess is largely funded by wealthy sponsors who have coins to spare. Most chess tournaments don't make much money as a business unlike other sporting events. There's not much of an advertisement value either. Companies that sponsor chess events do it either because their leadership loves the game, or as a favour for their grandmaster friends. Edit: forgot to mention government funds. That's another thing that make many chess events possible.

Athletes are people we look up to and we are saddened when they don't live up to our expectation. In Magnus Carlsen's case he has spoken nothing but truth. He spoke it to FIDE when he chose not to defend his title. And he spoke truth here. We all have the right, actually, the responsibility to call out unwarranted aggression that costs lives. The argument that Ukraine was about to join NATO and therefore posed a threat falls flat. NATO has never initiated an unprovoked attack. NATO is a defense organization. If anything, by being part of NATO, Russia would be assured that Ukraine would never make an unprovoked attack against Russia. Why Sergey would say Magnus or anyone else can't speak about politics I have no idea. Maybe not in Russia, I get it, but elsewhere, it is one of the freedoms we all aspire to maintain.

NATO promised not to get countries from the eastern block, because that what was asked by Russia to keep geopolitical security. Russia didn't want NATO at its borders. And when Russia at early 00s asked NATO if they can join NATO said no, obviously because it's against Russia so, why would they. So then Russia turned on it's head and instead of acting pro-western, acting more to defend itself, while NATO expanded east, unlike what was promised, placing bases in Turkey, having balkan states joined as well. Ukraine going western was a last blow. NATO and US instead of calling it off, just provoked a war (oh wait, they never did that, did they?). There are certainly own governments goals in Ukraine, but NATO and US could've prevented this from happening if they merely didn't support Ukraine going western, provoking russophobic moods in Ukraine and therefore provoking Russia.

Yes and no. The horrors of the wars are comparable, however the outcome of isr/pal will have little to no impact on global geopolitics while ru/ukr conflict is a pivotal moment in geopolitics that has major implications for both large and small nations around the world, particularly in Europe and the Mediterranean. On an ethics level I agree with you however it's tough to expect the majority of people to care to the same degree when the outcome of one event will not affect most people, and the outcome of the other affects all geopolitics. You kinda have to be realistic about expectations with people.

Why there aren't nearly the same in any way. Rus/Ukr is a large scale "Modern" war with the aggressor having nuclear weapons and both states are important food producers globally meanwhile Israel is a small insignificant apartheid state that acts as a US foothold in the middle east and Palestine isn't even a recognized state in all of North America, the important part of Europe, Oceania, or Japan. Much less so the designated terrorism group Hamas that are running the show in Gaza in contrast to the West Bank.
