Russian Female Ham Operators R3TM & R1BIG making waves from icebreaker Krassin (Callsign R1LK)

Ham Radio weekend in St.Petersburg with Maria R3TM. Part 1: the historic Icebreaker Krassin. Launched as the Svyatogor in 1916. She was the most powerful icebreaker worldwide. Krassin is very well known in Amateur Radio world: Umberto Nobile expedition to the North Pole was rescued by this icebreaker after the Russian Radio Amateur Nikolai Schmidt caught via home made HF radio station the S-O-S signal from distressed expedition.
Part 2 will be:
our visit to the Radio Museum,
how we heard the astronauts on 2 m band,
how we surprised the operators by taking turns working portable on the same frequency :-)

I was included in an invitation by senior crew with some Russian friends, to tour on a large Russian ice breaker that was berthed in St. John's, Newfoundland, in the late 1990s. It was extremely fascinating. The ship was HUGE.

Hi raisa and Maria. Good to see you both out and about. Love the old radio gear. I had a AR88LF from ww2 that came from hms mercury still with the paper work. Used to listen for hrs when I was young in the 1980s. Shortwave bands were better in them days. Number stations etc. Anyway all the best. Glenn 2e0bvp.🤗

This is so cool Raisa! I love ships. Its very nice inside the Bridge. I couldn't tell exactly what those horn shaped objects were for but I assume they were old school microphones? Or maybe they had no power and only used pipes to communicate to different locations of the ship?
