This gold coin was struck during the reign of Tsar Nicholas II, the last ruler of Imperial Russia. Gold 5 Roubles were minted from 1897-1911. The obverse depicts a bust of Tsar Nicholas II. Tsar Nicholas II was said to bear a striking resemblance to his distant cousin, King George V of Great Britain. Tsar Nicholas II was overthrown by communist Bolsheviks. After being overthrown, Nicholas requested Great Britain to provide asylum for him and his family, but King George V denied that request. Thus the Bolsheviks placed Nicholas and his family under house arrest. The Bolsheviks later assassinated Nicholas and the royal family. It was rumored that Nicholas's youngest daughter, Princess Anastasia, escaped the assassination. The reverse of the 5 Rouble features a double headed eagle. The double headed eagle originated in the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire was divided into a Western Empire and Eastern Empire. The eagle's two heads represent the Roman Empire's western & eastern halves. Russia would adopt the double headed eagle as a symbol. The 5 Rouble contains .1244 oz of 90% gold, making it the same size as a US $2.5 gold coin. The Bolsheviks melted many 5 Rouble coins during the Russian Revolution. 5 Roubles command a premium above their gold value because of scarcity.

Me too. The two headed eagle has a rich Roman/Byzantine history. Russia is influenced by Roman/Byzantine culture such as Orthodox Christianity, their alphabet, and two headed eagle symbol. I'm thinking of buying a 1883 Shield nickel proof graded PR63. Is $275 a good price?

Awesome vid once again! I love your educational videos. Market is flooded with common date 5 Roubles in the Cleveland, OH area. Premiums have really dropped from about $20-$40 over spot to about $5-$10 over spot, and this is for the common dates (like 1898-1900). Premiums remain high for the harder to find dates (like 1897 & 1901-1911). 10 Roubles are soft as well, but the 7.5 R and 15 R seem to always command a very nice premium.

Mine is graded MS64. My coin is also slabbed in a NGC "fatty holder." Fatty holders are early NGC slabs. Back then, NGC's grading standards were stricter. There's a possibility my coin can upgrade in today's grading standards.

MrMonkeySwag96 yh mate the luster on it is lovely you could get lucky if u get it regraded are you gonna do it
@MrMonkeySwag966 жыл бұрын
No, I like the old slabs. Not worth it either. Old slabs have a greater chance of upgrading. However they don't always upgrade. Only an expert can tell if a coin can upgrade. I'm no grading expert.

Many thanks for this video. However I do note some points as the double headed eagle did not originate in the Roman Empire, the earliest symbolic use of the double headed eagle was by ancient Semites (modern-day Arabs and Hebrews) in Iraq and Syria. Before it was adopted by the Byzantines (Eastern Roman Empire), it was used as a symbol throughout the Muslim world. Earliest use after the Mesopotamians dates back to Islamic Spain 10th century. Here’s an example of the double headed eagle as appearing on an early Islamic coin minted in the Levant and Turkey: www.numisbids.com/sales/hosted/album/017/image00613.jpg
@MrMonkeySwag966 жыл бұрын
Actually, the double headed eagle was first used by the Hittite Empire. The same Hittite Empire that fought Ramesses II's Egypt at the Battle of Kadesh. The Hittite Empire encompassed Anatolia/Turkey and Syria. So the double headed eagle has been used since the Bronze Age. I shouldn't have said that the double eagle originated in Byzantium. I guess it's better to say the Byzantines popularized the double eagle in the Western world.
@Fivology6 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I'm saying, the Hittites are considered semites by most historians, even though some classify them as an "unidentified" ethnic group. This is what I meant by "ancient Semites". I also referred to them as Mesopotamians, as some historians do refer to them by that, because at their height of power, they encompassed a significant portion of western Mesopotamia, and their culture was very similar to the Semites of Mesopotamia, such as the Assyrians, from which the Hittites borrowed the Cuneiform script. Their culture, even their names is similar to Semitic culture, hence why many historians classifies them as semites, in addition to the biblical narrative.
@MrMonkeySwag966 жыл бұрын
You're right. The Hittites did adopt Semite gods like Baal into their religion.

Ivan the 3rd of the House of Rurick married Sophia Palaiologina. Sophia was a Byzantine Princess from the last royal family of the Eastern Roman Empire. The Russian adopted the Acrylic Alphabet, Greek Orthodox Religion and had a claim to be direct decedents of Eastern Roman Empire.
@MrMonkeySwag966 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct. A Roman/Byzantine princess married into a Russian family. Ever since the Roman/Byzantine Empire fell to the Ottomans, Russia claimed to be the successors of Rome. In my opinion, the Byzantine Empire is one of the most important empires in history. It's amazing that the Eastern Roman/Byzantine Empire survived 1,000 years after the fall of Western Roman Empire. The Byzantine Empire protected Europe from barbarians, Persians, and Islamic invaders. Under Emperor Justinian, the Byzantine Empire reclaimed much of the Western Empire from barbarians. The Byzantines were often outnumbered by their enemies yet still won the battles. The Byzantine Empire invented Greek Fire, a medieval version of Napalm. Greek Fire can't be put out by water. The Byzantine Empire employed Vikings as elite mercenaries. The Byzantine Empire preserved Roman culture during the Dark Ages. The Byzantine Empire had the brightest minds the medieval world had to offer. After the Ottomans conquered the Byzantine Empire, the scholars fled to Italy. These scholars brought their Roman knowledge to Italy, starting the Renaissance. When the Ottomans conquered the Byzantines, Europe was cut from the Silk Road. The fall of the Byzantine Empire indirectly led to Columbus's discovery of the New World. As you said, the Byzantine Empire brought Orthodox Christianity and Acrylic Alphabet to Russia. It's a shame that history books fail to mention the Eastern Roman/Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine Empire had an enormous impact on world history.
@onuscronus9846 жыл бұрын
Yes a lot of rich History around the Byzantine Empire. They survived almost a 1000 years after the the Western Roman empire fell apart. Good informative Video. I always enjoy the History behind things.

Great gold coin and stunning design. Very interesting history! The Bolsheviks also gave all the farms to non-garming peasants that they used to overthrow the tzars. When people started to starve because none of those peasants knew how to farm the Bolsheviks took the land. Funny those peasants told them they couldn't take it because it was theirs lol. Welcome to what communism gets you. Thanks for sharing brother.
@MrMonkeySwag966 жыл бұрын
Same with Maoist China. The commies rounded up all the rice farmers and placed them in communes. The farmers were expected to make steel. Obviously the steel is shitty quality because these are farmers, not metal workers. Mao calls this the Great Step Forward when it's really 50 steps backward. Millions of people died in a famine. Forget communism/socialism, the idea of collectivism is dangerous. I like the two headed eagle design of this coin. The two headed eagle is a symbol of the Eastern Roman Empire. The Eastern Roman Empire is also called the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine Empire prevented barbarians and Islamic invaders from entering Europe. The Byzantine Empire is one of the most important empires in history. It's weird that textbooks don't talk about the Byzantine Empire. The Eastern Roman/Byzantine Empire influenced Russia's culture such as religion and writing.
@dwingsworld25816 жыл бұрын
MrMonkeySwag96 you and I sir are on the same page for sure. Collectivism will kill innocents no matter what the cause thats pushed in. Individual liberty is the only true way. I agree with you about the empire. I think a lot of the time its because they never want to offend different cultures. Appreciate it buddy.
