I've been studying the Russian language, history, culture and politics for the past three years. I've made some Russian speaker friends online, also I've made friends with some Russians who live in my town, Sarasota Florida. I was super surprised at how quickly they opened their hearts to me when I spoke their language to them. To a Russian it's a big deal when they hear a non-Russian trying to communicate in Russian. They understand and appreciate the struggle. LOL I love Russian people! ❤

I can remember my first day in Russia.........I had traveled for 48 hours with no sleep from the other side of the world, and I could not get my contact in Russia on the phone.......to meet me at the end of my journey in Siberia. A complete stranger at the airport in Moscow who spoke no english, helped me (almost no russian) figure out that I had the wrong area code and then spoke to my contact about my flight number and time of arrival. Absolute champion.......who at least I could thank profusely in Russian.

You can be detained for having rainbow colors in your clothes in Russia, this is considered a symbol of an extremist organization in Russia. In Nizhny Novgorod a woman was arrested for 5 days for wearing rainbow earrings (with the usual 7-colored rainbow). This was on 31 January 2024. (Not everyone, of course, would be punished for that, but they speak English in public, which is a risk factor as well.) The foreigners who don't know the local laws/customs can get into trouble. Locals generally feel how to behave to avoid such things (to not provoke those in power), but don't talk about that.

My local town has a 'mall' and there are only 7 shops occupying the place. One of them is a bakery and the other is a secondhand store. The major stores like WHSmiths and Wilkos have shut down leaving massive empty spaces. UK is sooo prosperous. NOT. Almost forgot to mention the main street looks derelict with more buildings sat empty than stores there too. It's almost a ghost town and it looks depressing.

I live in the city center of a large Russian city, St Petersburg, where there was not much land to build large mall since the old buildings are too beautiful and historic to tear down for malls but we do have one that was built about 15 years ago and outside the city center many were built in high rise residential areas. So those living our in the sleeping districts have malls like these so there is less need to go to the city center for shopping. So those living out further have much more convenient lives than 20 years ago. That also had the benefit for the historic city center to have less traffic and continue to have their many small shops on every block. I never needed or wanted a car after moving to St Petersburg from California 24years ago and never having lived in a city before, able to walk everywhere or use the very convenient public transportation really improves quality of life by not having a car and increases social and cultural interaction by 100x at least. I always valued having property and being more self sufficient so my old friends were surprised by my reports of loving city center life. In the US, crime poverty and dirt is the main product of cities with very distinct districts that separated people by wealth and security. But here it i so safe, and everyone gets along, with unlimited access to culture and social activities I find I love it. Any area of the city is a mix of wealth and interests and everyone gets along so walking home from a night of dancing or late night dinner after opera or drama is a pleasant safe thing to do here while back in the US it would be foolhardy and life threatening. That additional feeling of security and the calm it brings makes interacting with strangers or exploring new areas represents real freedom unknown in the US where suspicion is the default state.

It’s a pity you didn’t go to the store in this mall which sells traditional Russian crafts. It’s opposite that big food store Окей. And to the right of the shopping mall there is another building ( I guess it has the same name and in the same style) with nice food stalls kinda a food market
