The Russian Typhoon-class SSBN (Project 941 "Akula") is the largest nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine ever built. Designed during the Cold War to counter the U.S. Navy’s Ohio-class SSBNs, it features a displacement of around 48,000 tons submerged and measures 175 meters (574 feet) in length.
The Typhoon carries 20 R-39 Rif (SS-N-20 "Sturgeon") intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), each with multiple nuclear warheads. It boasts a twin-pressure hull design, providing enhanced survivability and internal space, including relatively luxurious crew accommodations. The class also features a double-hulled construction, icebreaking capabilities, and advanced sound-dampening technology to reduce detectability.
Despite its formidable design, only one unit, Dmitry Donskoy (TK-208), remained in limited service for testing new missile systems until its reported retirement in 2023. The rest of the class has been decommissioned due to high operational costs and the introduction of Borei-class SSBNs as their successors.

Isn’t that like… 1/3 a Yamato or Musashi? That’s just freaking crazy…. Edit: Yep, sure is. Yamato weighted in at approximately 71,000 tons and her sister boat at 73,000. So yeah, an Akula/Typhoon class nuclear submarine weighs 1/3 a Yamato! THATS CRAZY….! I have to see that in person one day.

Fun Fact about Russia: It was Russia who saved The Union during the American Civil War as they sent their Navy to San Francisco and New York when England and France were just about to enter the war on the side of the Confederates since London created the Confederates. France was already in Mexico making a spear head movement to resupply the Confederates and to open up a Pacific Theatre and to create a port in California. England already amassed 11,000 troops and growing stationed at their Northern Confederacies border now called Canada ready to open a Northern Theatre to divert Union troops away from their Southern Confederacy then to attack The Unions naval blockade. The Union would have been completely destroyed and annexed by those two great powers leaving the Confederates to exist as either a puppet state of London or to be fully brought back into the fold of the British Empire. London was already courting (threatening/bribing) other countries to get involved like Spain while Russia was in talks with Prussia to ally with incase London was to intervene. Seeing all of this Tsar Alexander II wrote a letter to Queen Victoria saying “If you enter in this war it will be a casus belli for all out war with the Russian Empire”. The stage was set for the 1st World War and Russia stopped it. There is also a memorial in San Francisco for the hundreds of Russian sailors who came off their Asiatic fleet ships that died while helping the city put out a fire that threatened to lay waste to it during the War.

Before then it was Catherine the Great's decree of Armed Neutrality that'd broke up the British naval blocade of the budding American Republic and enabled vital trade. But America did pay Russia back in a way back in those days: it was none other than John Paul Jones, father of the American Navy, who'd gone on to live in Russia serving Catherine the Great. He was very instrumental building up Russia's naval posture along its Southern frontier (Frontier = Okraina in Russian) which played a vital role in Admiral Ochakov's victory over the superior Turkish forces whom Britain convinced to test Russia's defenses on the Black Sea. The series of conflicts led to Russia eventually gaining Crimea.

@@AlexKarasev Very unfortunate that we became an Empire in the late 1870s and turned on our Best Friend even after they saved us 3 separate times. After we fell it only took 40 years for Russia to fall and go into civil war/revolution. Together we were a counter balance to the British Empire. Reminds me of that one Movie quote: Russia: "You were the Chosen One! It was said you would Destroy the Empire not Join them!" America: "I Hate You!" Russia: "You were my Brother, America. I loved you." Since our founding we have had much help on the International Stage and we were saved by Russia 3x. Starting with the Revolution where Russia and France saved The US in a Direct manor along with Spain just not as strongly then Morocco and India helped save us Indirectly. India because Franklins friendship with Hyder Ali the Sultan of the Kingdom of Mysore in Southern India planned together to start their revolts against the British around the same time which in turn absorbed 20% of the British Armada in India from being sent to America which could have definitely changed the tide in favor of the British if that didn't happen. During the Revolution the English King George III asked Russia to give him a Russian expeditionary force with the participation of Cossack units to suppress the American Revolution, but received a personal refusal from Empress Catherine. Much of it thanks to Benjamin Franklins political influence especially with Yekaterina Dashkova who was close friends with Catherine. Then again in 1812. There was a good speech at one of the Balls the Americans gave to the Russians in San Francisco during the War when they arrived to stop Britain and France from Physically intervening saying that "Alexander the 1st saved us in the War of 1812 and Alexander the 2nd is saving us now". They said this as Alexander I prevented Full Invasion by the London in the war of 1812 when Napoleon was pushed all the way back and the Russians occupied Paris, Britain wanted to put all their efforts and resources towards the Americans now that France was out of the way and while the Russians occupied Paris Alexander I sent a very stern letter to George Ill saying (sum and substance) 'you better cool it, or we will intervene ourselves'. And then the 3rd of course is the American Civil War as I stated before when Britain and France were going to open up 2 new Fronts against the Union as well as attacking the Union Naval Blockade. Tsar Alexander II sent the Russian Navy to San Francisco and New York and wrote a warning to Queen Victoria and prevented possibly what would have been the 1st World War.

@@AlexKarasev I think you will enjoy this quote from the Russian Foreign Minister Alexander Gorchakov writing to Lincoln in the Autumn of 1862 a year and a half into the war- "You know that the government of United States has few friends among the Powers. England rejoices over what is happening to you; she longs and prays for your overthrow. France is less actively hostile; her interests would be less affected by the result; but she is not unwilling to see it. She is not your friend. Your situation is getting worse and worse. The chances of preserving the Union are growing more desperate. Can nothing be done to stop this dreadful war? The hope of reunion is growing less and less, and I wish to impress upon your government that the separation, which I fear must come, will be considered by Russia as one of the greatest misfortunes. Russia alone, has stood by you from the first, and will continue to stand by you. We are very, very anxious that some means should be adopted-that any course should be pursued-which will prevent the division which now seems inevitable. One separation will be followed by another; you will break into fragments."

Fun fact: NATO called the soviet hunter submarine Project 971 Shchuka-B "Akula". From Wikipedia: "Some confusion may exist as the name Akula (Russian: Акула, meaning "shark" in Russian) was used by the Soviets for a different class of submarines, the Project 941, which is known in the West as the Typhoon class. The Project 971 was named Shchuka-B by the Soviets but given the designation Akula by the West after the name of the lead ship, K-284. According to defense analyst Norman Polmar, the launch of the first submarine in 1985, "shook everyone [in the West] up", as Western intelligence agencies had not expected the Soviet Union to produce such a boat for another ten years."

In an alternate universe where the Soviet Union took a bit longer to collapse, I like to imagine that the 7th Typhoon was finished but was instead converted into a cargo carrier to transport huge masses of stuff under the ice to bases deep in the arctic. The only one that almost matches the stats given is the USET-80, but that was not wire guided. Usually you are more thorough in your systems analysis so I am surprised at this generality. Sorry, the SS-N-20 SLBM (3M-65 & 3M-65M) it's code name is Sturgeon not SS-N-32 (3M-30) Bulava SLBM Only the Dmitry Donskoy SSBN was refited to carry the SS-N-32 Bulava. The R-39 Barak SLBM was intended to replace the SS-N-20- but due to the fall of the USSR and development issues the Barak program ended in 1998 with no missiles deployed. Interesting video. Regards from Romania.

Every Russian sub has retractable propulsors. Their actual purpose is for super silent moving, not manouvering. That is why Alpha clas would thunder around at 50 knots and would sudenly evade all tracking. There are old nato submariners here, ask them, they would confirm it without vanity.

I really think Super subs like these could have a big part in future drone warfare. Imagine a super sub that is also a drone carrier?

Seems like you did a mistake on the Type 53-torpedo. You say it has 2000kg warhead, but little bit further down in your presentation it says 400kg. I guess 2000 kg is the overall weight with fuel, engine, electronics, warhead and sonar. :)

Has any tried to develop a method for submerged subs to courter ASW aircraft?
@corvanphoenix
@corvanphoenix 6 күн бұрын
Absolutely! It's just very uncommon with nuclear powered subs, as they don't tend to play in the shallow end much. It started from the earliest days when subs would have deck guns for surface & air targets. In modern times, the maximum you can expect is a man portable SAM & LMG's the sub can fire if they're on the surface. The soon 🇩🇪 will have IDAS, which can shoot you down without the sub even surfacing.

So what WAS the actual range of the "Mouse Roar"? And the warhead of the Type-53 was 400kg and not 2000, that was the weight of the whole torpedo I assume.

Is that 380MW combined power or per reactor? Finland has 4 + 1 nuclear reactors, one of the four old ones, Loviisa I has 507 MW. So that sub has 4/5th of average size country’s nuclear power plant for two screws and sauna+pool.

Hey Sub Brief, question RE other subs. You've profiled SSGNs having 'pack-hunting' cruise missile programming. Based on what we know NOW about Soviet/Russian hardware & capabilities, do you think that was a genuine possibility, or an on-paper option that would never work?
