I have learned that the noise from the Rubis (at any speed) had more to do with her hull than her power plant. Thank you to everyone who pointed me in the right direction to confirm this without getting anyone in trouble. I can confirm now that the Rubis noise problems had more to do with the hull itself than the powerplant. We have one of the MOST INFORMED communities on KZbin and I am very grateful for your contribution and discretion.

out of interest, as a non-expert; given you said the agosta was the same hull, why would that have been quieter?
@josemariaserrano1812 жыл бұрын
I think you need to check your sources again Aaron, the reason why Rubis was "noisy" wasn't the powerplant, but the hull form. The French re-used the Agosta hull form, which is fine if you are tooling around at 5 knots, and found out that flow noise blinded the sonars at speed, which is bad because it's just about the most expensive fix that you can have, so they redesigned Amethyste and rebuilt the previous hulls as they went through refilts and refueling. The reactor was fine, and, being smaller that other nations', actually more silent.

We had an L.A. class and a Rubis operating in the Azores area during a 'FLAP' in 1988, messing with the minds of the transiting Russian boat's crew. During the post-FLAP debriefs of the captains of each, it came out that the L.A. boat got caught in the middle of a sprint crossing the bow of the Rubis which was nearly stationary while listening to the Russian and American boats passively. The Rubis captain said they had the L.A. boat at about 1200 meters at its CPA. The L.A. captain went ballistic claiming that there was no way because his boat was undetectable at 24 knots. The debrief team actually had to go and play back the tapes of the encounter (from the overhead P-3s) to prove to him that he indeed is not undetectable to a Rubis when he blasts by at close range. A little humiliation is a good thing for the arrogant, now and then.

Indeed. The Nautilus proved that in war games. Out of more than 5,000 mock attacks, only in three was the Nautilus was deemed sunk. It was hunting the U.S. fleet with near impunity, and it was the first of her kind. She was noisy, she was limited in her speed, but she still bested her opponents because her crew was more than up to the task. All the boats that followed her world wide only were faster, quieter, and deadlier. Even an older boat with a skilled crew and captain is the 21rst century version of a nightmare at sea for enemy forces.

They are similar in size to the early US Skipjack class. I believe the reactor is an integrated design with the steam generator within the reactor vessel which makes it more compact. It uses low enriched fuel, rather than high enriched of other nation's nuclear subs which cuts back on duration, but the reactor is easier to refuel with a big hatch above it, no having to cut through the hull like in other subs. 25 knots under power for extended periods still beats 20 knots for a couple of hours of a DE submarine, or 5 knots for a few days to a few weeks in the same. The French agents sailed into NZ onboard a small sailing yacht. I see a Mk48 torpedo is 5.8m long versus the F17 at 5.9m, so the French torpedo is slightly longer. I wonder if these measurements include the canister for the guidance wire? Ah, diameter is different, the F17 used French standard 550mm torpedo tubes, which were used on the Rubis and other French submarines of the era, the Mk48 used Nato standard 530mm tubes. The French tubes could be sleeved, but you would still have to change the fire control system for the Mk48 I presume. For me, the biggest problem is the limited warload, 14 weapons only. That had to account for torpedoes and Exocet, perhaps 10 + 4. Offload Exocet to carry mines. Perhaps in wartime that could be increased to 18 total with tubes filled.

Actually astonishing that the Rubis is substantially smaller than an Alfa/Lira. Also sets the Han class into perspective IMHO. Its larger than both the Rubis and the Alfa and they still managed to have insufficient shielding of the reactor compartment, whereas the French got it right in such a compact form factor.

Interesting video, but there seems to be a few caveats. To my knowledge, the nuclear reactor is thought to be very silent and also very safe, and since the Amethyste refit which dealt with the hull issues, this sub class is actually considered very discrete, hence the performance seen during the exercice with the US fleet. It is true that these subs are not very fast and cannot carry the same amount of weapons as larger attack subs (no cruise missile for instance) but they are very capable. Another comment you made that surprised me was about the F21 torpedo vs the spearfish torpedo: contrary to the US and UK torpedos, France has chosen to use an electric-driven propulsion: this is not just safer to use but much more silent, even if the speed and range may not be as good as their US/UK counterparts (but not by much): this makes the incoming torpedo much more difficult to detect and contributes to the overall stealth of the sub.
@kevincook10182 жыл бұрын
1, Nextgen US heavy weight torpedo program managed by DARPA is electric 2. Agree with you about radiated noise of modern reactor plants - very quiet. Elimination of reduction gears is also an important noise reduction. US had their early experiment with electric propulsion on nuclear submarines. She was the USS Lipscomb. The motor technology in the 1970s was not up to the reliability needed and she became something of a "pier queen".
@sebastianguerraty64132 жыл бұрын
There is more to a torpedo than just propulsion, I was interested in the scorpene sub brief since it is the newest sub my country operates, specially in the amount of public info about the torpedos. Having said that, I was surprised that a much newer torpedo falls begind the ADCAP and the sprearfish, however good those are. Aron if you read this, how do you access torpedo performance as a civilian? is it comments from people in active service or just the facts sheet for the weapon that with your experience gives you a good idea of how capable it will be? That would be a really interesting sub brief, one only focusing on weapons. Though from the sensitive nature on the subject I imagen the only info that can be said is it's long and skinny and eventually goes bum hehehe Maybe one of only the public info on russian weapons?

I had to read up on the Rainbow Warrior sinking when you mentioned it, and I'm *still* not sure I have it straight. Greenpeace had been protesting France's nuclear testing, this annoyed France. Okay, fair enough, would probably annoy me too if I were a nuclear nation state. Word had gotten to the French that they were planning to protest the 1985 nuclear tests and place people on nearby islands to monitor the blasts and the impacts of the tests. In order to deal with this and stop it being an...annoyance? France decided it would be a good idea to...*checks notes* send an undercover government agency team, fully supported with government assets and assigning a *nuclear submarine* to exfiltrate some of the agents to defeat New Zealand law enforcement, with the whole operation approved directly by the president, to bomb Greenpeace's flagship when it was at anchor in New Zealand, thereby violating an allies sovereignty and making an attack on innocent civilians...got it. WTF!?

That’s what secret services do. France invests billions in nuclear deterrence, sinking a small civilian ship is not very concerning in the whole scope of what government do usually.
@brunol-p_g88002 ай бұрын
That’s why it is called special services, because they run their business out of law, like any other agency be it from USA, UK, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Egypt, Japan, Australia, or NZ itself… On this particular matter, everybody was supposed to be outside the ship, one of the agents was in the crew and made everybody get off the ship, but the one guy suddenly decided to get back I side the ship to get his camera… The operation would have taken place no matter which one was the port of call of the ship/country the ship was. They decided to do it there in the port so nobody would be hurt, instead of just sink it in the ocean, but that one guy had to go get his camera at the bad time..

"It's a very good rotation for quality of life of a sailor who wants to serve on board a nuclear submarine but not be underway all the time." This is exactly why out of the 8 department heads I served with when I was a junior officer on a 688, every single one of them did their JO tour on an SSBN. If it were not for SSBN's, the US would not be able to staff its fast attack submarines. The true purpose of SSBN's is to serve as a way to lock in junior sailors who do their tour and think "hey this isn't so bad" and then when they get assigned to a fast attack they're like crap I'm already in it for X, if I leave now I get no retirement.

Only at the beginning there were some sound issues due to the hull form, issues that were taken care of with the refit. Nor is its engine room noisy. But considering that the CdG carrier needs to be at at least 27 knots to launch aircraft and that the Rubis class job is to escort, it stands to reason that it can do at least 27 knots to keep up with the carrier group it is escorting. For such a noisy sub as you say, it did manage to not only "sink" the USS Theodore Roosevelt and her escort (including a Los Angeles class sub) during Comptuex exercise in 2015; but in 1998 during exercise Péan, The Casabianca "sank" the carrier USS Dwight D Eisenhower as well as a Ticonderoga escort using both Exocet and torpedos. I am not sure which is worse a noisy sub or deaf sailors? ☺

CMN is a privately owned shipyard, well known inter alia for having built fast patrol boats and minesweepers. But CMN has never built a submarine! There is a Naval Group shipyard in Cherbourg (easily located on Google Maps) which has built most of the French submarines. The "Liste des sous-marins construits à Cherbourg" (available on Wikipedia Fr) enumerates more than 100 submarines built for Marine Nationale since MNS “Morse" in 1899. MNS “Rubis" (Rubis class, launched in 1979) belongs to this list, together with all French nuclear submarines. __ .

This presentation is pretty good, but the French navy had its own twist: the Agosta class was described as a pre-nuclear class, a nuclear-like design fitted with a diesel engine. If I remember well the Agosta was capable of 20 knots on battery (short burst..), which the navy boasted to be the fastest diesel sub underwater at the time. So the Agosta was to prepare for the upcoming nuclear class, the Rubis was the cheap first class to learn how to operate them and the Barracuda is the real thing. The navy was proud of Rubis being the smallest nuclear sub (at least it was first on one count, small may help in the Mediterranean too). This is very French, stretching every bit of the budget and running on prototypes. It just take 30 years.. Imagine the US Navy deciding to build subs based on the USS Nautilus, just to get nuclear subs faster and cheaper. 🙂

@Gentleman...Driver2 жыл бұрын
Carriers were always very vulnerable. If you think about WW II, quite a few were sunk. A few were just lucky. Nethertheless the benefits of carriers are quite significant. If you want to put down some major firepower far away from home, these are the right tools. Also as an assett to show some power in a certain region. In a WW III scenario (nuclear exchange) submarines are the most important assett. Not carriers.
@TXGRunner2 жыл бұрын
Carriers proved to be our most valuable naval asset in every conflict and near conflict since World War II. No other asset can provide power projection, close air support, and non-lethal "show of force" like a carrier. Yes, in a hypothetical slugfest with another naval power, they'll be very vulnerable, but that is the least likely threat/conflict scenario. Carriers remain the best, nee only, conventional force power projection weapon we have.

@Sub Brief The reason why carriers continue to exist and be built is their utility in non-nuclear, non-naval scenarios about force projection across the seas. I do concede that in an intense naval war, the carriers will likely find themselves being specifically targeted to affect the USN's ability to assist in concurrent land campaigns. 18:52 The Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) is also definitely *not* one of the newest CVNs we operate; TR is the 4th of the 10 Nimitz-class hulls and was built during the Reagan-era naval expansions. Indeed, her second deployment was to the Gulf for Desert Shield/Storm.

Canadian here. I remember in High School arguing with one of my teachers. Sometimes I hate how the kept safe people ignore things.... like physics... and put those keeping them safe at more risk. Respect to my uncle who died in our armed forces.
@stitch771002 жыл бұрын
As often, the answer would be : yes and no. A diesel sub definitely has to surface sometimes to "breath" and it is especially critical in the North. However, it is not an "instantaneous spotted moment" as you may believe. A network of satellite can not survey all the surfaces of the Earth, especially not all the oceans. Detecting a vessel in that big of a surface to watch is more a matter of luck for now. You can only follow what you know is already here. So a sub, it's still quite quiet. Especially if they use snorkels too. I don't know how the debate went, but you should make sure you were not blinded by your belief you were absolutely right. (In some cases, even by today standards, conventional propulsion subs are quieter, but you need to explain when, and why...)

Because the UK didn't had the technology to build their own nuclear sub and are dependent of the US. The first SSN they made themselves is the Astute and it did not go very well...

I was visited by DNCS in 2014 to help them design their submarines with acoustic tiles and how to attach them to the hull; the visit was sponsored by the MoD/Royal navy we had technical discussions and demonstrations for about a week. At that time the Marine Nationale decided it was too much work to design their boats to take full advantage of anechoic tiles (their are a considerable number of design changes to the metal bits) and they felt it was too expensive. I retired at 70 in 2018 as a subject matter expert on stealth, sonar and propulsion, and I think that the French have decided that they really need to make their boats quieter. The visit was essentially to improve the Barracuda design and to get tips on design for the Australian boats they were designing (very badly and over a long time and ripping the Aussies off on price). Thankfully the Aussies saw what was happening and sensibly went into AUKUS. Kind regards

Well, French subs are already quiet enough without the tiles anyway, else HMS Vanguard and Le Triomphant would not have rammed each other.

While your forecast of a future sea battle between maritime powers is plausible, maybe even likely, it's a bit like battleship admirals in the 1920s talking about the future Pacific War. Even as the elected civilian and appointed military leadership systematically hobble the US Navy and other services, America (especially with her allies) can effectively control the sea lanes worldwide. The only possible major conflict on the horizon we can see is with Communist China, most likely over Taiwan. There's no indication the US has the political will to meet our obligations to defend Taiwan, so the US loses before the first shot is fired. In the unlikely event the US decides to uphold our promise, what prevents the conflict from escalating to a nuclear confrontation rendering most of the US Navy irrelevant, not just the carriers? I concede our carriers are of limited utility today in a slugfest with another naval power. That's the least likely type of conflict to develop. They have, however, proven to be the most useful tool in our arsenal in every conflict since World War II. Power projection and local air supremacy remain our most likely scenario. I agree our super-carriers are far more vulnerable than we accept. The exercise where a theoretical Iranian force of Boston-whaler type small craft overwhelmed our defenses should have been a wake-up call. Maybe we have too many eggs in very big baskets. A good argument can be made for more LHAs that can function as light carriers. Certainly some smaller adversaries can field submarines too. For our most likely and common mission, the carrier remains our most potent and irreplaceable tool, for now.

As usuel very complete. let me add some point They where our first ssn, so we have to learn à new way to make war. Diesel.can't run very fast. the first four submarine where slow and noisy they have the role of draft. the hull create lot of fir the propeller were really bad. and the sonar system not so good and an old scrolling combat système. But on the other side small ship are good for Intel.mission near ennemi coast. most if the deployment take place in med which is à noisy sea. we participante to desert storm with that kind of submarine and the mission was à success. Mort of the dsub that came in med were relativement noisy VI/II, CII and the EII. we can track them with our poor sonar without being detected. with the Amethyte nerly everything is new. the dmux is very good for its size.and the towed array worked fine. with these we were able to play with other even if we were under the trafalgar class and Los Angeles. during Sharp Guard we have been used by Nato in missions well suited for us. Bon vent, Bonne mer

The UK is looking to agree on a £2.6 billion takeover of Ultra electronics by a US company Advent International which supplies anti-submarine technology for British warships, as well as spy aircraft and UK submarine technology, and some of the technology that Ultra technology came up with, was funded by UK taxpayers according to Bloomberg.
