@vylbird8014Ай бұрын
They are great as a deterrent though, providing you can act crazy enough to make the treat plausible. If Russia didn't have nuclear weapons, NATO would have sent their own forces in to assist Ukraine long ago and the war would be over by now with a decisive victory for Ukraine. But NATO can't do that, because if they did there's a significant chance Putin would actually fire the nuclear weapons.

A little lesson about Russian propaganda. It is for internal politics and citizenry first and foremost, it is secondarily for anybody else. The target audience is mainly the Russian audience, any effects that they can get from the same propaganda outside of Russia is welcomed, it is the cherry on top. But if you understand that little clause, about the consistency of it being used internally first and foremost, the propaganda starts to make a lot more sense. Gaslighting on the other hand, trolling, misinformation not specifically propaganda, is normally for Western or outside of Russia global south countries consumption

Marc, what you wrote might have been true during the cold war but certainly not today. Todays Russian propaganda is mostly designed to soften up foreign countries so that they are either scared of Russia (and vote accordingly) or would even welcome Russian occupation (these two themes or angles are absolutely constant). This is called "reflexive control" in academic parlance.

I think they are underestimating what 750 kton would do, nagasaki and hiroshima was 16 & 21 ktons and the damage was already similar to whats told here, the places were so flattened and so disconnected from the outside it took days for the rest of the country to realize the magnitude of what had happened. But the worst part is modern missiles are multiple warheads so it's basically cluster nuclear munitions... yeah some are supposed to be lures but chances are you still get more than one going off in your region. Current French M51 missile is 10 warheads of 110kton each for exemple. Each submarine carry (up to?) 16. Not only your local infrastructure, electric grid, hospitals etc are in ruins, but so are the ones of the neighboring cities that could help. Thats where ultimately the casualties would really start racking up in the following days. Most people can't even comprehend what the situation would be. I'm not saying any of this to mean we need to cave in to russian threats btw. That's what 'mutually assured destruction' doctrine means. If they want to play games, we will all play, and all lose. So the only winning move is not to play. Remains to be seen if 2bit dictators can still understand that in their hubris and delusions of grandeur.

Of course, that nuke has to work first. I would suggest looking at the amount of money it takes to maintain a modern nuclear arsenal. The USAs most recent budget allotted over $60 billion a year for the next ten years to continue to maintain and keep up to date - their nuclear arsenal and delivery systems. The USA has the same amount of warheads as Russia. Yet Russia's entire military budget has barely outpaced the USAs annual nuclear weapons maintenance budget. With their low budget and history of embezzlement it is unlikely these weapons have seen any upkeep or system maintenance since the fall of the USSR. We have more to worry about these warheads becoming a dirty bomb randomly exploding at some unfortunate point than an actual nuclear explosions over our major cities.
