The good thing is even if I don't understand the whole video I still spend time watching her pretty facial expressions. I don't need subtitles. Спасибо за интересный урок. ❤

@@LinasLessons Isn’t it strange? The Russian word for “stop” is “Oстановка”… “Oстановка” has the same first 4 letters as “Octagon”. An “Octagon” in English is a shape that has 8 sides. Our “Stop signs” are shaped like “Octagons”. AI says that it’s just a coincidence, but it admits that there’s no specific evidence to support that assertion. These type of things fascinate me about linguistics.

I have a few things to add to the topic. 1) The ending of a surname isn't the best way to describe its origins. For example, surnames like Yusupov or Levin sound like Russian surnames, but it is very unusual to ethically Russian person to have it (these surnames are respectively Tatar and Jewish) 2) You didn't mention that most of our family names are changing in case if the person is female. For example, my last name is Tretyakov, but my sister's one is Tretyakova (my mom haven't changed her family name after marrying my dad, so I'm using my sister as an example). But where's a rule, there is always an exception. Russian family names ending with -ykh, such as Chenykh or Sizykh, cannot be changed. 3) Some of Russian belittling names can belong to both men and women. Like Zhenya (Yevgeny/Yevgenia) or Sasha (Aleksandr/Aleksandra). 4) There are three names in Russian language that have different forms: Ilya, Foma and Kuzma (though the last two are extremely rare). Male patronyms formed from those names end with -ich, and female ones - with -nishna. So it would sound like Ilyich/Ilyinishna.

What happens to отчество when a mother is not sure of baby's father first name? 🤔
@LinasLessons

She give’s a child her dad’s name as patronymic or leave it blank. So some people actually have only surname and first name as their official name.

Why can’t we start with alphabets, that way we get accustomed to ascents and speak it gradually.

Because the point of my channel is slightly different. I focus on grammar and things that beginners should know after they learned how to read. You can find many other videos where teachers teach Russian alphabet 😊
