1. "yotted" vowels (е, ю, :е, я) + и soften the predececcing consonant when they are not in the beginning of the word. 2. soft and hard signs with the following "yotted" vowel show that the predecessing consonant is softened оr not + the vowel is pronounced with a "й" like in the beginning of the word

I do not have a "hard sign" on my onscreen keyboard, so i'll use ^ instead Compare Пять (p'at') - 5 and пьяный (р'janyj) - drunk Отец (ot'ets)-father and от^ехать(otjehat')- drive away

Hard signs nowadays are used mainly in the beginning of the word with Yotted vowels and indicate that the consonant read withoud softening

Been learning Russian on my own and ь was easy and I assumed ъ to be opposite and to be a hard sign... I was right.. but it didn't seem right when it was used in the middle of words.. always confused me. So now it makes sense!

@@IshEaterson does “молодец” change depending on the gender of the person you’re speaking to? i know that nouns have transitions of spelling if you are speaking to a female, male or something with neuter gender but.. with other words than nouns? is that possible? (apologies i’m just at an a1 level of fluency 😅!)

ль is like a spanish l and нь is like ñ in spanish. im not sure about сь tho, probably a palatal version of с (ç), but im not sure. if anyone knows please tell me

I am struggling with the ь a lot, for example the words ест and есть sound pretty similar, but one means “eats” as in он ест яблоко and the other one means there is as in у миня есть. I guess it takes a lot of practice before you can hear the differences and are able to apply them.

Ъ in bulgarian is pronounced like a uh

Ъ is never used at the end of the words! You can see it only after prefixes nowadays. Then why were there the examples with ъ at the end of the words? It was done for the purpose to show you how the words sound compared with words with ь.
