As a native English speaker (not sure if that makes a difference, but whatever), there are several things that have always stood out to me. If you listen closely, he never says "we"; there is always a strict distinction between "you" and "me". That's _me_ in the corner. I thought that I heard _you_ laughing. And there's always distance between them; the "you" and "me" of the song are never mentioned in the same breath in a way that would imply that the two are engaging with each other. The way the lyrics are laid out, the singer's cadence, and the tone (in the literary sense, not the musical one) also all point to a distinct division between the singer and everyone else. The second thing that's always stood out is the singer's apparent severe social anxiety. Phrases like "Oh no I've said too much--I've said it all" are absolutely dripping with the fear of rejection. The singer is afraid to share his deepest self, his inner thoughts, because he's afraid that people won't like the person he sees in himself deep down. I will say lady even though you are drop dead gorgeous I am enjoying listening to your dog breath heavily. Reminds me of my dog pushing his face on the screen door and breathing over the sound of our loud dishwasher. That was a seriously loud breathing sound. Hope your dog is ok. He/She is so cute.

I still love his dance. I have great memories of dancing around the house like that with my kids to this song (they are 34 & 29 now). Michael very rarely, if ever, let’s us know what his lyrics are about. He leaves them to our interpretation. He may be singing about the milk that spilled & how his mum will be angry & the dance is from his mum’s punishment so he’s praying to be more careful lol! (Just kidding, I know it’s deeper than that). Love this song. Also I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets emotional with some music & can’t explain why. Great reaction as always 😊

The phrase basically means losing self control usually with anger - so if you Lose Your Religion" you are sort of out of control. I assume it's based on the idea that if you are truly following Christianity then it's supposed to be the meek inheriting the earth stuff rather than letting your negative emotions overwhelm you.

I like the melody,the music,the vocals,although the music video and the lyrics dont make any sort of sense to me so I disregard that..I discovered that many bands in many music videos tries too hard to be profound,to have this mysterious depth and meaning but often in the end it just becomes a confusing mess to everyone,maybe even to themselves,out of it....anyway,the song was a hit,it sounds good,the melody and vocals and thats the most important part anyway,most would say.

It's nothing to do really with religion. The group is from Georgia (USA!) and in the south it's a way of saying you're losing your composure or decorum - as a person with faith shouldn't do that!

Irina another great review of a great song. Despite your confusion over the title and lyrics you still wanted to cry. I believe you felt empathy for the emotional difficulties you felt the singer was expressing. Just my opinion as you are always an open book with your emotions. Having said all that I would just say that song titles and lyrics often have more than 1 meaning and not always literal. Especially older songs when certain subjects were not communicated openly. Just to let you know, Irina, the song has nothing to do with religion. The phrase "to lose one's religion" comes from the Southern US and it means to lose one's temper or feeling frustrated and desperate". The whole long probably doesn't really have any real meaning to it, it was just based on the lead guitarist learning the mandolin which is a strigged instrument.
