The Soviet expert visits the "New Belgrade" - the communist planned neigborhood in Belgrade, Serbia. (Former Yugoslavia) I grew up in Soviet neighborhood in Russia, so it was interesting for me to compare these communist era neighborhoods.

With lifts/elevators that have double doors like that one you have to close the inner door first otherwise it won't start, also you can't open the door before the elevator completely stop otherwise you won't be able to open the outer door. In our country, buildings are not usually named after leaders and politicians, at least I don't know of such a building. We have some older buildings that bear the names of some famous people, benefactors, artists, writers, etc. such as "Kapetan Mišino Zdanje" in the center of the old part of the city. Brutalist buildings were generally named after their shape, some geographical place, street, part of the city in which they are located, etc., such as for example "Televizorke" (they got their name from their windows that resemble old square televisions); "Potkovica" (horseshoe); "Kifla", "Banana", "Testera" (saw); "Toblerone" (named after the famous "Toblerone" chocolate because of its angular shape and protruding terraces in the shape of a triangle); "Rudo" (the name of the birthplace of the architect); "Mercedes" (seen from the air, the three buildings joined in the middle form a sign reminiscent of the Mercedes Benz brand); "Crvenkapa" ("little red riding hood", got its name from its unusual red metal constructions on the facade and on the roof); "Genex kula" or "Zapadna kapija Beograda (Genex tower/ Western City Gate, it has two names, one is by Genex Group and other is because it resemble a high-rise gate greeting people arriving in the city from the Western side; it's that tall building near the end of the video that resembles a rocket and a spaceship, it is one of the symbols of Yugoslav brutalism, at the top it had a restaurant that was supposed to be rotating, but that idea was abandoned). We didn't have astronauts, but we had people who, together with the Russians, Germans, and others helped the Americans fly into space. For example Mihailo Pupin, one of the greatest Serbian scientists besides Tesla, the father of telecommunications, known for inventing long-distance telephone communication by placing loading coils (of wire) at predetermined intervals along the transmitting wire (known as "pupinization"), he was a founding member of (NACA) on 3 March 1915, which later became NASA. Seven Serbs participated and were in high positions in Apollo, that's why we personally received pieces of the moon from Armstrong, which are in the museum of Yugoslavia.

Interesting comment! Especially about the space scientists 👨‍🔬. But in case of buildings we also have some nicknames sometimes like the “korabli” (ships). But mostly it’s due to the Leader’s names. But I noticed in New Belgrade a lot of different types of buildings. While in Russia the design is much simpler

5 floor standard for elevators was introduced in Yugoslavia in 1960s, so any older building that had 5+ floors didn't have elevators. And that building at 17:45 is actually 4 floor building by our standards (ground level+4 floors) so when it was built it didn't really need elevators, but they added those 2 floors probably in 90s after fall of Yugo (since such things were forbidden back than), many abused that 90s chaos to gain something, build some illegal building, add extra apartments and so on.

Those building in Belgrade were not made of panels. They are build by reinforced concrete. It might look to you as a panel, because it is basicaly concrete, but it is different consctruction system.
@CrazyRussianSergey

Ohh. Interesting. Thanks for clarifying
@atomov
@atomov Жыл бұрын
Actually, they are panels, pre-fabricated panels are made out of reinforced concrete in factories and put together on site. Same was done in USSR and the only difference is that Yugoslavia had more diverse prefabrication and emphasis was put on designing spaces following Le Corbusier's philosophy. Each block or development had it's own unique design, whereas in Soviet Union they were more standardised and often reused.

The Tower, left side used to belong to a very successful firm 'Genex' (so it is called 'Genex Tower') and it is mostly abandoned and they put those big commercials. The right side is with apartments. It is not very sound proof because it picks sounds of cars from the highway and it's concrete is vibrating a lot, so it is different from other buildings which have better sound isolation.

'Zastava' means 'flag' in Serbian. The factory where they make weapons and vehicles in Kragujevac was called Red Flag. Now it's just Flag because you know. It was among the first factories (1836) in Serbia liberated from Turks and it was an Arsenal for weapons repairs, along with Cannon Foundry in Belgrade! In 1851 Cannon Foundry moved from Belgrade to Kragujevac. Soon it became center of workers' movement and that's how it became 'red'.

That Genex building with Zepter neon and the huge Beckham bilboard a.k.a. the Western City Gate is gradually eaten by urban decay, it becomes ugly and dirty. During 70es that building was new, modern, and exclusive. On the top was scenic restaurant, and it was a motive of the Belgrade city skyline That style of architecture is known as a Brutalism, well a Yugoslav commies was under influence of Le Corbusier modernism, each block was build with a different type of buildings, as a matter of fact that urbanism is high quality of planning, and in the most cases with nice apartments inside. OK there was a few exceptions some buildings are for demolition, but generally it was a high quality of built, and those commie neighbourhoods still has it's living value. Soviet style of those kind of buildings was an endless copy and paste of the same project, a Yugoslav commies wanted to present themselves different kind of commies than Soviet commies so they build differently, with diversity of style. Socrealism was out, modernism was in. Sadly Novi Beograd now looks derelict, those buildings and infrastructure missing a regular maintenance, as a matter of fact that part of city was the biggest and the most exclusive commie blocks in all of ex YU but today looks like a shit. Modernist commie blocks in Zagreb are in better shape, and quality of the build was proven by the earthquake M5.2 two years ago, and after that event a commie buildings are cool again.

Very interesting! Please do more videos like this! Very different from Brooklyn apartment buildings. Oh, the glorious deterioration in Serbia. Also, the thing about picking up dog waste...it could be the law there. New York has that kind of law where you must pick up after your dog. Plus, we have more decorative fire hydrants here. Surprised (we'll, maybe not) that such a thing doesn't exist in Russia. How would the fire trucks pump endless amounts of water if needed? Also, the one-way double door in the elevator is quite common in New York apartment buildings. But elevators are often much nicer.

Hello! I don't know about the law, but for example you need to pay in the pablic transport, but not many people pay here haha. So even if there is a law about the dogs - still it's respect that they pick it up. But I don't know why they don't pay in the buses or trams though haha. Yeah. Alright I'll try to answer as many as I can so I'll edit a lot. That first car was Fiat. Then the car you asked is FIAT UNO. they are not Yugoslavian even though plenty of Yugoslavian cars were based on the FIAT. Zastava means flag in Serbian, not fortress. Every building that have more than 4 floors must have elevator by the law. Usually buildings are closed but during the day they open the door but after 4-5 they close the entrance doors. Here in my building they are doing the same. Yeah we do have baba at the windows as well. During the 80s and 90s even though we were under the sanctions we had plenty of cars. Yugoslavia was never communist country by the way, we were Socialist Country but with oni polar party system, in the 90s we introduced multi party system. The thing is that we had really developed industry but everything was crashed after the collapse of the Yugoslavia because a lot of big companies had production in the different states for example engines were produced in Serbia, casting for engines was in Bosnia, parts was manufactured in Croatia and so on.. So when the collapse happened complete industry collapsed as well. Lately started to recover but we have knowhow, we have experienced engineers and we have open markets to China, Africa, Soviet countries etc... Sometimes elevators was on the side, but first floor it doesn't count sometimes, it called ground floor or mezanin (I have no idea what it means and I can't even translate something that I don't know what it means in Serbian 😂 but it's something like high ground level) and that doesn't count as the first floor sometimes so you can count 5 floors but they have 4 and they don't have elevators. My building has 5 floors and we do have elevator, but I live in elite neighborhood called Dedinje in Belgrade, its pretty expensive. Sometimes last floor is built later, usually during the 90s when we had a lot of refugees from Bosnia and Kosovo and we didn't have much regulations, basically the law was you build and later on you will regulate it but it has to fit in the design. Here as well, last floor and first floor is cheaper than middle. As I said I'm in the 5 floor building and I live in the middle, 3rd floor and my apartment is 10% more expensive than the last floor or ground level. And I don't live in that kind of buildings. My neighbourhood is planned, every building is the same but it's done with the red bricks and it's the same, last and ground floor is 10% cheaper. Simply people are trying to buy middle floors even though it's not commie block, it's pretty much elite neighbourhood and its the same thing. Yes it's for carpet.

If a man was wandering around buildings and playgrounds, looking into cars here, people would call the police right away.😂🤣😂 the fire things we call fire hydrant . Used to be fire trucks carried water but as buildings got much bigger they had to pipe water for the pumper trucks . Newer buildings have pipes all through the buildings in the ceilings and smoke detectors, if there is a fire it sets off the water system that helps put out fires immediately….in most cases, unless grease fire or fire that’s been smouldering inside the walls.

Good system. I wonder why they didn’t introduce this hydrants systems in USSR. Maybe tried to save money? 🤔 but in modern areas of Russia even in rich neighborhoods I still didn’t see these hydrants. Hmm

@@CrazyRussianSergey In Russian towns and cities, how does the fire department put out house fires without having access to these fire hydrants? Do they just rely on the fire truck bringing water?

In Serbia, people don't have the customs to call the police for trivial reasons. Is that good or bad, I don't know, but the main reason is that Serbia is a safe country. Petty crimes are happening, but they're usually not life-threatening and not that common.

Sergey is a very smart guy, and he is figuring stuff out very quickly, but he can't figure out that that nice car is Fiat. That Zastava car is Yugo, and it was supposed to be a Fiat car as well, but the Italians concluded it was too ugly to be put into production. Regarding the language, I think that you guys destroyed Russian with the vowel reduction.

You can call houses in USA and Canada poorly built. Wood we use to built dog houses and all the building on this video are at least 50 years old. Our military budget is 2% only and it doesn’t swallow anything related to those building. Buildings are private property and it is up to owners to maintain them.
