When she's creating her songs with her team, if she doesn't like something, she's going to want to correct it, she's a perfectionist. She will make corrections until she likes her. She was basically arguing with someone on her team and she said, do you see my hips moving? The song is not ready. My hips do not lie. Said in my words, what she told in an interview.

Shakira is Colombian but her Father is/was from Lebanon and her mother is A native Colombian and Shakira means Grateful and thankful in Arabic and quite frankly its ironic for that is how many of us feel a bout such god given gift that she is.

Hips Don't Lie is a song about a guy and a girl flirting, with the girl basically telling him to follow her lead by saying "be wise and keep on reading the signs of my body". The iconic "hips don't lie" line in the song is used as a way to say that her body's liking what she's feeling with him, but it also has a deeper meaning to it coming from Shakira. See, Shakira's colombian (a country full of dancing) but she's half lebanese, so she's been belly dancing since the age of four and she has incorporated arabic elements into her music in the past. So she says that when she's in the studio (cause she writes and produces all of her songs) and they're working on songs and she doesn't feel like dancing (that is, her hips don't start moving) that that would mean the song's not really ready as she would tell the producers cause her hips don't lie and they wouldn't be moving yet. So putting together the colombian joyful carnaval elements in both the dancing and the music itself (it features Cumbia style instruments and lots of Spanish words) with her arabic belly dancing signature moves, the song completely makes sense and is basically synonymous with Shakira at this point. This song was so huge in the 2000s it went to break the record for the most plays in the radio stations and it became the best selling song from that decade. That's actually huge, coming from an artist that's not from the US or Europe, whose native language is not English, with a song that fuses indigenous colombian instruments with arabic belly dancing and spanish words in it. It's just an amazing mixture of the whole world, yet remains very much Shakira's essence. I mean, there's a reason why Queen Shakira's the biggest Latin artist ever.
