Before WWII, even during the Great War bayonet charges were common practice. The Russo-Japanese War served mostly as a prelude to how the battles in Europe would be fought. Men were thrown into meat grinders to take objectives and push back the enemy. Some succeed, a lot failed. And at a high cost.

The Japanese still made Banzai charge in W.W.II with bayonet on rifle. The Red Army made similar charge known as "Hoorrah" with Ppsh41/43 submachine gun. Big difference in result!

But more than 10 years later, in world war i. They assaulted a machine gun position in the same way. Tens of thousands of people were killed in one day.
