If people din't know, that's the infamous 88th Infantry Division of the NRA (National Revolutionary Army) and was one of the most well-trained unit of the entire NRA forces that was trained by the Germans. Before the Japanese invasion, China and Russia was in good terms and were often given arms and such. However when Chiang thought it was a good idea to rid the CCP once and for all, he riled up the Soviets and soon they pulled out in supporting and sending arms towards China. That left the KMT in a pickle and somehow along the way, Nazi Germany was just rising and need cash to revitalize their economy and what better way was to sell arms to one of their biggest exporter since the time of the Kaiser and that's China. When the Nazis realized that Chiang has the same common goal of ridding the Communist as much as they do, not only did they sell them weapons enmasse, they also picked up the idea to help in training the NRA soldiers and along the way, 22 infantry divisions were sent to Germany in and all came back very well-trained in the German standard. When Japan invaded, Japan wasn't in the triparte act thus Germany continued supporting China along the way by sending helmets, guns, ammo and even had their military advisor to Chiang, Falkenhausen stay in China and continue assisting Chiang with this "New Army". Chiang was told to use them sparingly and only send them out as a breakthrough force by Falkenhausen but with the situation being desperate as the Japanese were overruning all Chinese positions from Shanghai (Chiang had already lost 2 German trained divisions in Shanghai with one even involved in the infamous Sihang Warehouse battle) to the outskirts of Nanking, Chiang still believed these forces were to be tossed in and fight hard to defend the city. Turns out, Chiang was wrong and that's how the lore of these German trained Chinese soldiers that have the ethos of "Not one inch closer for the Japanese" came about and how enraging it was for Chiang's military commanders to watch their best troops die in the slaughter when they could have kept them back and wait for a chance for them to strike a weary Japanese army.

Also Hitler made the worst move ever. China was in the same pact under "Anti-Comintern pact". The one who actually betrayed the whole pact was Japan. Germany abandoned China for Japan is when US got full green light to invade Germany. He made the biggest mistake in history was trading China for Japan and declaring war on US after Japan in attack Pearl Harbour. Japan was already on its own by the time the war started. No one trusted the Japs more than Germany. When Germans went for Japs. Everyone knew who should be destroyed first. He first planned for US to join Germany, then he went against it. Basically who ever goes against China is usually an enemy to the world by that time.

@@makemap Japan was a fully industrialized powerhouse with a capable navy. The sole Great Power in Asia. And you're saying the Germans should've sided with China, when what they needed was an ally with a powerful, modernized Navy? China was a liability. They would've been powerful had they had enough time to westernize, unite and become industrialized, but that wasn't the case during WW2. Sorry but you're an idiot for criticizing Hitler's one optimal choice. It was wrong in hindsight considering the blunders Japan made themselves, but that was the best decision he could've made at the time. And you're also wrong thinking we cared about China. No one gave a rat's ass (save for the tea-loving brits) about that backwards "nation" of savages. All they had to show for their large size were their large manpower and trading ports. Or did you miss the part where the League of Nations did nothing aside from morally condemning Japan's actions? The only reason the US embargoed Japan was because its ambitions in the south were disrupting the economy and trade. The KMT even went as far as to try and garner sympathy from the West with their Sihang warehouse clown show. And we all know how that went, lol. No one from the West respected China. It was ironically just Hitler who appreciated those rice farmers because China was historically powerful, but even he realized how futile it is to side with savages as opposed to an Imperial power who even though has an army with feudal mentality and equally feudal discipline, has modern weapons and can kick Chinese rice farmer butt 10 to 1. The Japanese Imperial army, at least, despite being known for their sick perversion and cruelty were devoted to their own people and event went as far as to commit mass suicides just to keep the Allies away from their mainland. On the other hand you have the Chinese who at the same time period flooded and drowned thousands of their own people just to win the war. Really, it's not surprising since these are the same types of people who take pride in their history of having "great" leaders who encouraged his men to cannibalize their wives and children, all to win a war. Such loyalty and heroism! Truly the way of a Chinese hero! LOL! I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out the reason the Chinese fought so hard against the Japanese weren't because of empathy and sorrow, but because of intense racism - that their pride got crushed when the people they, for the longest time, considered to be inferior dwarves invaded them and they couldn't fight back. As their famous Sun Tzu said, If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the dwarves so off to the meat grinder you go, my gullible Ling monkeys.

@@Kevin-kn6uq That's... Not really the case. Chiang's purge of the Communist isn't because he found the Soviets useless and din't need them because "China was strong enough" but because the CCP was sowing discord amongst the alliance. Before the actual 1927 purge, the CCP had already caused chaos for the KMT and the Zhili clique warlords who controlled Shanghai at that point back in 1925 during the May Fourth Incident. Chiang had personally saw how much chaos these Communist could do and with him just gaining power in late 1926, he can't have these people right in his backyard trying to create chaos and potentially wrest power from him. It also din't help that he found out that Wang Jingwei, the actual defacto leader at that time of the KMT had worked behind Chiang's back and tallied up with the right-wing members to oust and coup Chiang which ironically Chiang found out about. Then what gave Chiang the ultimatum to get rid of the thorn (the CCP) once and for all was how the CCP took Shanghai down themselves. When the Communist wing of the alliance heard about the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) marching towards Shanghai in an attempt to oust the Zhili Clique once and for all, they started an armed uprising led by Zhou Enlai and Chen Duxiu and they indeed kicked the warlord army's ass and claimed Shanghai. When the NRA forces led by Li Zongren and Bai Chongxi reached Shanghai, they were actually shocked that the CCP had grown soo large and had beaten off a warlord army themselves. With the CCP now basically having a militia army and the fresh memory of what happened in 1925, the KMT were scared that these right-wingers would create discord again by going on massive riots and protest which, they were right. Soon as the NRA had settled Shanghai, the CCP went straight to work and harassed the European powers in the International Settlement to release the entire area back to Chinese jurisdiction. This actually shook the entire left-wing and caused paranoia to Chiang and many of his associates that if this continues, not only would the "face" of China be tossed into the bin with a burning fire right in it but also with the CCP armed now, they could challenge Chiang's authority with them being so great now and thus declared the CCP ousted from the Nanjing KMT. Thus, Chiang started passing secret edicts along the Nanjing KMT-held territories and even employed Triads like the Green Gang in Shanghai led by Du Yuesheng to capture, torture and publicly execute these "Commies" for all to see as the CCP were "anti-revolutionary in the ideals of late-Sun Yat-sen". Soon, the purge happened everywhere from Zhuhai to Nanking and Changsha and beyond. In an ironic twist of fate, Wang Jingwei was still at loggerheads with Chiang and still maintained a standpoint that these Communists were actually helpful and they could work together for a better China and maintained good ties with the Soviets in Wuhan with his own government called the "Wuhan KMT" but when he received news that Stalin had personally wrote to the leaders of the CCP even in Wang Jingwei's regime to raise up as a peasant army and kill Chiang. This shocked Wang who promptly negotiated with Chiang while watching his government collapsed and then fleeing to Germany.

@@JsJdv If Germany gave China more technology, Japan would not even stay in China. The Japanese army was crap, some Japanese were converting to Chinese side anyways. The Chinese puppets were giving up and de-linking from Japanese control. Japan would have been the first to go in the war and capitulate. They couldn't hold China let alone stay in China. Even with the Navy, the Navy is useless because they cannot fight on land & an air war. The Zero was overrated. The BF109 fair much better against Zero as it can fight against P51 Mustangs and Spitfires no problem with Aces under the wings. Japan would have ran out of manpower and aircraft fighting against full German-Chinese alliance. Japan had to get better weapons trading with Germans for example Tiger tank techs. Soviet Union could have just sat out for a while anyways as Germany is the main power house of all factions in WW2 technologically. They were the first to get Jet aircraft's, first to build continental rockets, first to get Heavy penetrating tanks that can knock out even cold war era tanks. With Chinese manpower and resources German would have produce as much equipment as Soviet Union and gave them a massive edge. Just like today's German cars. Japan was not fully industrialized, it ran out of fuel. They did not know how to mine fuel. They were trading with Americans to get more fuels and conquering lands that produce fuel for their aircrafts. Why else they went Kamikaze mode. Hitler made the biggest mistake of his life, not helping China out ,esp when they were already fighting Communist since Spanish civil war.

The soliders have german gear because they are part of the nationalist chinese forces that were trained and supplied by Nazi Germany prior to Hitler eventually cutting of support for China at the request of the Japanese. These were the most elite and formidable troops of the Chinese nationalist forces and were more skilled and disciplined than their Japanese counterparts, winning many victories over them. However, in an effort to gain more substantial foriegn support against Japan's assault, Chiang threw them into the fray in the defense of Nanking, hoping they would put up a heroic defense that would move foreign countries to help. They did put up such a defense, often staying even when all other Chinese units had disintegrated and fled, holding to the last man or acting as guerrillas after being overrun. As the Chinese Nationalists were unable to relieve or replenish these units and no substantial foreign support arrived, they were decimated at Nanking and either wiped out or were only a shadow of their former self afterwards. The skill & determination of them presented in Flowers of War might seem overblown, but I can assure you that if anything the movie downplays this. Compared to standard Chinese & Japanese soldiers, the German-trained Chinese were supersoldiers that outwitted, outplayed, and frustrated the Japanese army to no end. Part of the reason Japanese soldiers were so brutal in their treatment of the people of Nanking was in retaliation for the shame of defeats inflicted on them by these soldiers.

Japanese troops were moving, not standing in one place like in the first stand off. Plus they had tanks for additional coverage and fire support.

Some of the contributing factors of the Japanese Victory over China's Allied army has to be with infighting among factions such as the Kumentang and Communist. China lacked alot on what Japan had tenfold a well equiped and Mechanized forces consisting of Tanks, Artilery, Aircraft and ships ready to support a long drawn out offensive though this doesn't mean china's weak.

@Shadow Responder true, nazi Germany and imperial Japan were allies. but typically Imperial Japan never in fact help nazi Germany defeat the soviets union. Because Japan sign a temporary truce with USSR. If they were closed Allie’s Japan could’ve invade soviets union and the soviets would have to worry about fighting both sides. But it never happen.

The fact that they were not even communist on the Chinese side shows you have a large lack of knowledge and maybe should not be talking this was made the the the country led by the ccp but it does not really overdue what happened during the war you sir though don’t seem to be very smart and probably live in America and have learned China = bad because communist which I do not like the Chinese government but sometimes you have no reason to talk about subjects.
@ilikeships93332 жыл бұрын
Also the fact they didn’t talk about the efforts of communism in this movie also shows you lacked the effort to even try to know about this and decided to go with being somewhat racist also this movie is not about the people who led in fact it shows that many that led were not good but it shows the bravery of Chinese soldiers during ww2 in which they were out gunned out dated and had no organization but still put up a fight.

@Buzzy_Bland Жыл бұрын
Those aren’t communists, they’re soldiers of the Kuomintang’s National Revolutionary Army. Entirely different political entity, so you don’t get to justify the Japanese atrocities there with them being communists. They actually fought against the Chinese communist party before and after Japan had surrendered. They eventually lost to them, not least because the CCP used the war as a way to let japan grind the KMT down and went from a haggard collection of broken rebels in an isolated province, to a power capable of seizing China. So in a way, Japan is partially responsible for the CCP getting as far as it ever did.
