Never saw this deleted scene until just now. Really enjoyed it. The fact that Rust said sorry at the very end, while mostly futile in Laurie's eyes, is actually a big testament to his character. He wasn't just saying sorry for how he made her feel, he was saying sorry for who he was. And he was saying it honestly. Basically, "I'm sorry for being the piece of shit that let you down in this way." Just my view though. Maybe others have different opinions.
@johdominic4 жыл бұрын
I read it that way as well. What makes it especially powerful is that we’ve NEVER seen him apologise before, largely bc he’s cut himself off from sentiment since the dissolution of his family, thus he doesn’t need to feel accountable to anyone on an intimate, personal level. But now for the first time in YEARS he actually has someone close, thus he actually feels accountable.
@SuperRobertoClemente4 жыл бұрын
I don't think he sees himself as a piece of shit, or is apologizing for who he is. I think he's apologizing for hurting her-- and perhaps for having enjoyed being close to her, knowing that sooner or later this would happen. His convictions about not having children are consistent and defensible. Conversations like this happen in the real world more than people want to admit. Having kids is complicated stuff, even if we have a lot of encouragement to not think about it.
@catslino50372 жыл бұрын
@@SuperRobertoClemente I agree, children often happen and people that are in love accept them, learn to live happily with them. But some of us strongly oppose carrying another person into this mad world, it is a hard choice, like Rust says, it contradicts our programming but it is a choice your higher mind grants you. For me Rust says sorry for her and for himself. He would love to make her happy, but his convictions are a absolutely serious.

I understand that shows cut out certain scenes for the sake of pacing and significance to the overarching plot, and while I think the end result that we got was perfect, I think seeing a bit of Rust’s home life would’ve been worthwhile. In the 6th episode we see Marty chide Rust for having let Laurie go, and it’s clear that that hurts Rust (even though he wouldn’t admit it); a scene like this could’ve explained why

I see a lot of people on here pinning this all on Rust, but it seems like she also knew what she signed up for. They're two people with two different desires, it doesn't make either of them more at fault than the other. Her calling him a piece of shit is an emotional reaction, him saying he's sorry isn't him saying he's sorry for leading her on. If you've actually watched the show, I don't think Rust would be inclined to lie about how he felt about having kids. He was saying he's sorry because he can't give her what she wants even though she probably thought she could get him to change his mind with enough time.

Can't she understand how Rust more than anyone would not want to bring children into the world he knows?gee When my wife and I got married, the minister insisted on an interview with us before he'd agree to perform the ceremony. He was her minister growing up. Not mine. I felt a little put out like, "what does he expect us (me) to prove?" It really wasn't anything like that but more an opportunity to explore the main question of if we'd discussed if we wanted, as a couple, to have kids. His point was, "if you're both not on the same page with the kids subject, you might not want to enter into the contract of marriage. You both deserve to know where the other one stands on this one. If you want to talk about other things you want to be on the same page as one another, we can. But this is the one I and our church are most concerned with for the happiness of you both." Since we were "negotiations" I insisted that if she wanted to have children, both before and after they were born, activities that create children must continue no less than once a week. You've got to hash this stuff out before the vows. Boilerplate contract negotiation really.
