i dont see it this way, he never cares about honest with himself, or about trust in his relationship. he lies, betrays her all the way, but wouldnt see this aspect in his own actions. he's selfish, in his way he own his wife, he is the law. and rust was telling him, but he raged and dodge it. it was only a matter of time, his wife already noticed that he's not telling the truth. its a normal relationship in my opinion. all she did was to hurt him, he should know how it feels. and then he push the anger against rust to compensate his feelings. he would never see that he's the center of this all. if you where her....why would you be in this relationship anymore?......rust was outside, he knows very well, if he has this problems, she had the same problems mirrored. rust yearned closeness, that why he get in there. all his speech about evil mankind was to compentsate his losts and to overwrite the pain.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it a thousand times. The first season of True Detective is a masterpiece. Every actor and actress involved brought their A game. Unlike a lot of other viewers, I didn’t necessarily hate the following seasons, there were good moments and I’m glad I watched them, but season one just set the bar way too high.

It's all down to Cary Fukunaga's direction, and Pizzolatto plagiarizing Thomas Ligotti. Which also explains why the lightning in a bottle which was s1 wasn't repeated. Pizzolatto was exposed for what he is -- a hack -- in s2 (for s3, HBO brought in David Milch to carry him), and Cary Fukunaga didn't return, partly because of a combative relationship with Pizzolatto.

The exquisite malevolence of a woman scorned by a man is perfect. I love this scene. Marty is so dumb. A beautiful wife, two beautiful young daughters. It shows how lost he must be to throw all that away for a fling with some young girl he met at a bar. I love the look on her face when he walks in. No make-up. That look only a woman who is ready to destroy a man can have. I've seen that look. It's devastating. Even before she opens her mouth and speaks my heart has been ripped out of my soul. That look on her face when he walks in. Great acting. We've all been there. When a woman knows. There's no turning back from that look. It's devastating. "I haven't been f*cked like that since before the girls". Oh that's a killer line.

I come to conclude that it's because women in relationships (marriage and society and general) treat sex as a commodity - they trade favours with it; attention, protection, material goods. In a relationship, sometimes they deny sex a s a way to manipulate or communicate. In that context, a man that receives attention outside of marriage has to overcome a lot of biological and societal programming to say no. Whan a woman does it - it's easy and deliberate, she only has to "give it way". Hopes that clears things up, to the gender differences about cheating.

I mean, yes, he blames Marty first and foremost. But let’s not pretend he doesn’t also resent Maggie for taking advantage of him at his lowest. When she shows back up in 2012 to see him, he’s extremely cold to her, and justifiably so. She also insinuated he was a bad husband with zero knowledge of his past just because he tried lobbying that her kids still need a father. Maggie is the victim of their marriage, but she’s no saint herself.

Maggie was right in that Marty wouldnt leave or even be that upset that she slept with someone, considering all he has done and the fact he would know she only did it to try and hurt him, not because she wanted another man. But then she thought of Rust, not only were they partners and friends but Maggie knew there had always been tension between them but she knew Marty had been jealous and paranoid about Rust and her before. All the things Marty had told himself were just in his head or his own guilty conscience projecting, like when Rust mowed his yard and was with Maggie, he would now second guess and doubt all that. Would drive himself crazy thinking maybe this wasnt really the first time between them, all those nights he left Maggie to set alone maybe she wasnt always alone. Did she really just show up out of the blue at Rust and seduce him after 8 years knowing him, or maybe it wasnt there first time sleeping together. I believe Marty tortured himself with wondering for along time before being fully convinced that nothing had ever happened between them before then. Maggie was pretty distraught and desperate when she showed up at Rust. Maggie wouldnt have done it had she really had time to think about it without being so hurt and mad. Had Rust not been there I dont believe Maggie would have went back. She was only thinking about hurting Marty and getting him away from her and her kids she hadn't been able in her state to think it through fully what happens to Rust. Had Rust not been as hurt, frustrated and pissed off as she was but about the case and drunk to boot he wouldnt have done it, he wouldve seen what she was doing if she even would have tried it had Rust been sober and alert. Neither one was thinking as clearly as they normally did but were both acting out of pure and powerful emotions, something neither one did often.

Rust also shows guilt over things even more fully out of his hands lol it's hard baked into his character. Of course he's going to take responsibility for this despite the fact he was drunk and (per the script also on pills) coherced into it by a trusted friend. Its a complicated situation but Maggie showed up at an alcoholics house with booze and the intention to get him drunk to sleep with him while he's vulnerable. If the roles were reversed I really don't even think it would be a question.

+Mesmer ASMR You're missing the point. Maggie could have fucked anyone as a way to get back at Marty. By using Rust, she dragged an innocent, already severely broken man into this fucked up situation. She knew Rust's weakness and completely exploited it, just to get back at her husband. It may have made her revenge even sweeter, but at what cost? She could have done this without collateral damage.

Oh please. Rust, be manipulated? By a pissed off housewife? He knew perfectly well what he was doing. I think he'd actually been hoping for the opportunity, as a way to push Marty away. Rust had been drinking. He was in a fragile state, emotionally and mentally, basically 24/7. You know damn well if the gender roles were reversed, you would be singing a different tune. What's with your fucking condescending attitude anyway? It's just a TV show.
@mesmer3780
@mesmer3780 7 жыл бұрын
Oh gross you're one of THOSE. "If the gender rolls were reversed damn feminazis stole my ice cream waaa!" How do you live with yourself? Ok fine. If the gender rolls WERE reversed, the show would still be a character study in the cost of self-absorption. She-Rust would still be a manipulative, self-destructive, misanthropic asshole who takes advantage of an angry spouse to nuke the one positive relationship in their life, so they could continue in their mental image of themselves as the Christ Jesus of Pessimism. At the cost of several dozen lives over a decade. "Oh but Rust had been drinking." First off all, Rust was ALWAYS drinking. I'm convinced he was mid-blackout through the whole raid on the projects. Secondly, is anything about his and Maggie's relationship believable? Does Rust really strike you as the sort of character who enjoys girly talk phone calls about how cute so-and-so is? Does Maggie really seem like she'd be interested in being bffs with a mentally-unstable middle-aged police detective? Come on. He endured Maggie's awkward attempts to befriend him because he knew she was his exit plan from his life. Maggie awkwardly tried to get close to him for the same reason: "bang this person and I have an excuse to let go of my life."

I reviewed two scenes from True Detective regarding these characters. One where Marty attacks Lisa’s lover and this one, where Maggie admits her vengeful infidelity. I realise not many people seem to care for the circumstances that drove her to this self-damaging point of manipulation and utilisation of Rust’s vulnerability. People seem to adore labelling her a “cunt” or “bitch”, while justifying Marty’s actions in the other video where he drunkenly assaults Lisa’s date, claiming that “pussy drives a man wild” and essentially placing the blame on women. Sensibly try to prove me wrong, but why is it that sinful acts of imperfect female characters are less justified than their male counterparts? Everyone seems content on the shallow name-calling when it comes to women. Maggie did some very bad things, but as Rust put it when speaking to Marty in the present during their reunion: “You pushed a good woman to do bad things.” And I think that truly is the essence of Maggie’s breakdown. It’s a tragic misstep driven as a realistic expression of distress. She’s not just a “bitch”, she simply fell prey to circumstance. Marty had the free will to not cheat on her. But he made the choice to.

She only fucked Rust because it was the one thing she could do that Marty couldn’t live with. She did it so Marty would let her leave him. She didn’t ruin Rust’s career, Rust did that himself. Rust’s boss was very close to firing him before he qui because Rust wouldn’t drop the Dora Lange case.
