This is a really simple and quick way to rust dye lots of fabric. The trick is to layer as many layers as you can and to weigh down the layers with books or heavy objects to make sure there is ample contact with the rusty items to the fabric.

Just a tip on rust dye-best to leave outside if you can-rust process is airborne & can rust other things around the pan or in the room.

I've always wanted to try rust dye but thought it was a difficult process. The staples are a great idea and I can't wait to try this process! Thanks very much for sharing.

Hi Aimee, I did watch this vid when it was first out, and had to give it a go once again. You did an amazing job on this, and I find the scrubby pads an intriguing idea to try. Thanks so much for all of your shares.

You need a SODA bath to neutralize the vinegar. Salt is not alkaline enough. Look at saltwater on iron at the coast.

So, are you using straight vinegar? Or mixed with water? Shouldn't you wash these afterwards to get rid of the vinegar? I feel that the vinegar might destroy the fiber if left on.

I just finished your amazing Magpie Journal workshop! So amazing!! I did have a question about this process. Will these materials have a strong smell of vinegar in my books? Or should I launder before placing in my journal? Love your work!!!

Hi! I’m so glad you enjoyed the course. To neutralize the vinegar smell you can prepare a salt bath with a bowl, water and a couple tablespoons of salt. dip your rusted pieces into the bath and air dry.

I'd like to try this with paper. Maybe just laying the objects on top and in between layers of paper to dye.

I tried this yesterday....Do you take the staples out afterwards? And I also rinsed one that had a lot of vinegar on it and it rinsed most of the color with it, I'm guessing not to rinse?

Hi! I did not take the staples out on some of my pieces and they look really cool either way. If I rinse I use a bowl of water and a couple big tablespoons of salt. Just dip the rusted fabric in quickly and set out to dry.

Are these fabrics washable? Or are they "only" to be used in an artificial way?

I would only use this technique in pieces that do not need to be laundered. There are other techniques that stabilize the rust and would be better suited for different applications. This is a purely experimental technique. A beginners approach.

Great tutorial! Thank you!!! I'm just curious whether you have any advise on large pieces of fabric. I have several sheets that I would like to use in rag rugs of different techniques. I don't need any fancy designs, just an overall dye. Maybe it would work best with the strips torn already. 🤔

You could achieve a rust dye effect on a larger piece of fabric by using a tub. Just throw all the ingredients in together and let soak. I would then make sure did the salt soak at the end to set the rust and keep it from fading.
