@@DIYMAN Any OTC rust removal product will contain an acid. All of the rest of the gunk they put in there is used for smell, look and viscosity. TBH, you would get better results just going to a hardware store and buying phosphoric acid. Make sure you use rubber gloves, eye protection and have a neutralizer nearby (baking soda). I give it an A+ because it cleaned my parts and made the metal shine like new. I used a peice of Scotchbrite to scrub my parts after allowing the jelly to do it's thing. Sometimes you have to do another coat and Scotchbrite again. I sometimes use a brass "tooth brush" which is not as abrasive or steel tooth brush. Either way I will sand and prep my parts for paint or polish them a wire wheel and squirt clear on them. Other times I polish some or my parts with buffer wheel so the look like chrome and then squirt some clear. I like some kind of coating to keep my parts rusting making my work last longer. A+

To keep the metal from re-rusting use a good corrosion inhibitor if you don't want to paint it. Blaster Heavy Duty Corrosion Stop Protectant is good. Shake the can then spray it on and wipe it clean. For heavy rust, apply a kinda thick layer then cover with plastic wrap so it won't dry out, then leave it for a few hours or overnight. It also helps if you can knock any scale or loose rust off with a wire brush. If you use a wire wheel in an angle grinder to get most of the rust off, then 5 or 10 minutes is adequate. Otherwise this stuff takes a bit more time to work.

naval jelly is essentially phosphoric acid with a thickener to make it into a paste. I have used naval jelly in combination with 85% phosphoric acid (food grade is readily available). It is an excellent rust remover, and does not have the toxicity of oxalic which is also an excellent rust remover.

Oxalic acid only toxic if you eat too much in food. Also bleaches things, as commonly used for linens in the past.

@@timwhite4288 Oxalic acid is toxic and may cause burns, nausea, severe gastroenteritis and vomiting, shock and convulsions. It is especially toxic when ingested. As little as 5 to 15 grams (71 mg/kg) may be fatal to humans. How well a person does depends on the amount of poison swallowed, how concentrated the poison is, and how quickly treatment was received. The faster a person gets medical help, the better the chance for recovery. Severe damage to the mouth, gastrointestinal tract, or airway may occur and quickly cause death if not treated. Holes (perforations) in the esophagus and stomach may cause serious infections in both the chest and abdominal cavities, which may result in death. Surgery may be needed to repair the perforations.

I have been using naval jelly since 1980 when I had an old rusty set of wheels for a rustier Firebird. Took two applications but all rust was gone so I could paint them. What can I say? At 16 in the 80's, you did whatever you could to get your old POC muscle car looking as good as you could on the cheap. Wish I would have used the naval jelly under the bondo. I bet the body would have lasted a little longer! My indrocution to DIYing. The wheels never rusted, the body fell apart. Royal jelly has been my go to for - my whole life I suppose. It is somewhat acidic so if you are like me and tend to not wear gloves etc., I would make an exception on this one. I have had it splash into my eyes when in a hurry and that did not feel good so would recommend eye protection. No damage to eyes just rinsed them out with an eye washer in a hurry.

My best process for removing rust is use a 40 gallon plastic trash barrel ( hold big parts, fill it 2/3 with water, then throw in a gallon of muratic acid (about 16 bucks for 2 gallons at home depot) for heavily rusted parts leave in over night, ( don't put aluminum parts in they will disappear, small steel or iron parts like screws can vanish too) remove and wash liberally with water to neutralize the acid, will turn the steel black, if parts are greasy clean with soap and water before soaking, 9 % vinegar works well too...don't put in chrome parts it will turn them black...done a lot of parts like this, for lightly rusted parts, leave in less time. It will remove paint too.

muriatic (hydrochloric) acid is used in swimming pools to balance the pH levels of the pool water, to kill mold, remove rust stains, get rid of calcium deposits, and clean the surfaces. You need to be careful with muriatic acid since skin contact is dangerous and mixing it with some materials can release free chlorine gas which is extremely toxic.

Another way to remove rust is with a container of water and an electrolyte in the water... baking powder baked for 15 minutes turns into baking soda. Use that in water to Cary the current. You can use 12 volt current, but since I have a lot of extra laptop power supplies I use 19v at about 3 amps. You will need a piece of iron or steel. . No stainless steel. Mix baking soda in water. Attach the metal you don't want to the positive lead. Attach the metal you want to de rust to the negative terminal. It's the reverse of electroplating. The rust deposits onto the sacrificial metal.. I did have some larger clips that I attached to the wires to make it easier.. I used a 55 gallon drum and could do most of the bumper When I was done all rust was off but it left major holes.. a friend welded it it up good as new
