Thank you so much for tuning in This was a bit of a surreal experience for me since I've been listening to Rustage for multiple years now. Was a tad nervous talking to him! I hope to get better at these interviews. In the meantime, check out all of Rustage's links in the description and give his DnD content a try! I will be uploading more episodes of Beyond The Booth every Friday, so stick around because there's a lot of amazing artists I had the pleasure of talking with!

my favourite parts of rustage interviews are always the parts where it diverges into a discusison about sport

So stoked to hear Rustage talk about Watsky, as he’s such an aspiring individual in so many ways. Incredible talent with insane artistry for his craft and amazing genre bending spoken word tracks that are so impactful. Genuinely the nicest guy I’ve ever met too, legit stayed for over an hour just talking with me after a show in boulder. Then saw him at Red Rocks, saw us out in the front row, just to come out and talk with us and introduce us to people. Which is something that just doesn’t happen at Red Rocks. Also really happy I got to see his final for awhile tour. As I really shared my love for music with my mom and she absolutely loved Watsky too. We’re actually both in the vr recording of the boulder show. So since she passed it meant a lot to go and see that final show, even if I went solo, I did get given my vip pass for missing a show that had to be cancelled. Which I’m happy I got that opportunity, because music is one of the few things I really get the chance to go all out for and be a part of the community. So, it’s definitely really cool to hear and not at all surprising why I mesh with Rustage’s music in general, not to mention I’ve just gone deep into nerdcore and love to see it all as a passionate fan. Maybe I’ll be able to make it out to npc in the future, but don’t get the chance to get out of Colorado often due to issues with my health. Tho if any of these incredible nerdcore artists do a big U.S. tour and end up in Colorado, you know I’ll be snagging tickets as soon as I hear about it.

Yeah, I think nerdcore is the perfect melting pot of passions and interests. As it can span so many genres and niches, bringing together people from so many different places and corners of the internet. I admittedly have so many varying passions, that I’ve managed to end up in a lot communities that you wouldn’t think would have crossover. Tho I do think Rustage specifically having inspiration from Watsky makes so much sense. As they’re both so experimental and willing to make music for the love it, spotlighting smaller artists and making tracks bigger than sum of the artists coming together. I mean they’re just genuinely wholesome individuals that are so passionate about what they do and actually sharing that passion with other artists and their fans. I mean Watsky did that world’s longest freestyle record to raise money for tour staff and fans who weren’t able to recoup costs during the pandemic. Even tho he’s kind of taken a step away from his music career at the moment, a track between the two of them would be unreal. I mean I just love seeing so many separate artists coming together and exposing one community to another artist. That’s why I love live shows so much, you meet the coolest people and often you share so many random things in common you wouldn’t expect. I mean I definitely wasn’t expecting to see so many middle aged women at a One Ok Rock show, but my mom was one of them and all of them were so incredible hype for this J Rock band that’s not even that big in America.

Looking back, it’s hilarious to me that I didn’t know Rustage was a serious rapper until I listened through 90% of One Piece DnD, then stumbling on the rap he’d made for the series. Even then I thought “oh, this is probably really niece and cheesy”, but then he started singing and it was the biggest plot twist of the series.

I tried to not cut out any real parts of the conversation. Just a few dead zones or moments where we got interrupted by someone else or noise. I appreciate you noticing because my main goal, which I wrote in my notes when i came up with the idea, was: No fabricated moments, no committed outline, no gotcha moments. Just talk - human to human.

Keeping most interviews around this length, I still didn't have enough time at NPC to get everyone haha. Definitely would love to do a longer form style to really delve into details, but that all depends on how well these interviews perform and if the artists agree to hop back on with me for something of that nature.
