Ya. Usually it just idles a little funny, until it warms up. Then it cleans out. This was really bad, and I should have known better. Then again, nothing like a little youtube drama.

Best video I've watched for this procedure. At least the owner didn't waste good money on oem or Gates parts. 😂 It's a shame he kept driving it with just water. What a waste. I only buy OEM or Gates for timing belt kits. When you pointed out the melted lower shield my gut said he roasted the head gasket. Great job with camera and commentary. If you care about those sorts of things 😂 👍

"Tree-Jackers" Love it. Thank you so much for the vid. BTW.. That "special tool" to hold the pulley in place while you loosen / tighten the crank shaft nut is called a 'spanner wrench'. The KIA Sportage was 'engineered' to use that tool to take on and off the crank shaft pulley. Personally, I wouldn't use an impact wrench to put that nut back on. Also, I wouldn't turn the engine over (before starting project) with a wrench and socket lodged to loosen that nut as Scotty Kilmer suggested. The pulley was 'engineered' to use a spanner wrench to take it on and off with.

@@RustBeltAuto I also like when you say "the victim". I don't know what these car / truck owners are thinking. They're not. They are a 'victim' of their own stupidity and laziness. I have a 2009 KIA Sportage with 110K on it, and everything looks 180 degrees from this guy / gal's Sportage.

Great walk through. Good images and commentary. I appreciate you actually taking the time to put it all back together rather than just saying "the build is the reverse of the teardown" as. Thanks for the torque information as well. Using a socket extension as a cheater bar was a good tip. I just put the laptop on the air-cleaner and worked right through it. Great job. Thanks for the help! For others - > Get an organizer box with about 20-30 compartments. At each step, take all the bolts and clips for that component and put them in a compartment, filling left to right. Then when you put them back, you work right to left and you have exactly the right bolts, at exactly the right time - rather than trying to keep them sorted on a work bench. > at 26:10 - the right idler pulley. The offset lobe should be up as pictured. it's very easy to put that part on upside down. The pin can miss the hole and go off the side of the back of the pulley. It installed flat and torque down fine, but the offset lobe was on the bottom. I didn't notice it until I tried to put the lower cover on and it just would not fit. > To fix that, I had to remove the tensioner and compress it with a 5" clamp and replace the pin as mentioned earlier in the video. Then reinstall the pulley and the tensioner and pull the pin again. > Other thing was the lower cover and upper cover share a long bolt between them, so when putting on the lower cover, I thought I'd misplaced a bolt until I got to the upper cover and found it went through both. > If you're torquing down the crank pulley by hand, it's easier after the motor mount is installed. Keeps it from moving around.

Sometimes that happens when the crank jumps a tooth, or it was not assembled properly. It should have a camshaft correlation code of somekind.

hey man thank you so much for the video, so i had this same problem but it started as a cam shaft position sensor. Went ahead and changed it and as the engine was about to turn over it made a pop and smoke same from around the serpentine belt. I was about to do this replacement but i see that at the end you say that the engine is cooked. My question is how can i tell if this engine is no good before i go ahead and do this replacement?
@RustBeltAuto

@@markovalenzuela3315 if you think you overheated it, and wrecked a head gasket, or something, you can do a block test. It needs to be running to do it. Cmp sensor codes might happen because of a timing belt issue.

That's always the trick, trying to scrape the old gasket off without scoring up the surface. I just did this on my 98 Camaro Z28 with the LS1. Aluminum face, you don't wanna mess that up. Plastic scrapers and a bunch of gasket removing gel that barely seemed to work.
