Rustic Oak Door Project Ep12 | Penultimate Episode of 'How to make a front door'
Uncle Al adds some finishing touches to the rustic oak front door by adding the beading to the door window; fixing the sliding gate to the inside of the oak door so it's got that prison style, or Prohibition era, feel; and fixing the letterbox in place.
There's a few bits outstanding that will be added when the door is hung - locks, handles, escutcheons and drip beads.
One last episode to come and then this puppy is done! In the meantime we'd really love to hear your thoughts, and if you haven't already... SUBSCRIBE!

It’s already eaten a rainbow trout, it’s full! In fact it just needed a piss in fast water! Good times! Thanks for watching! All the best!

She is 20 years old and we have replaced some steel but mostly wood within the boat as well as new wooden deck. New electrics throughout and new engines. @simoncroatia

Dirty Shed Creations Finishes I’m no expert and what I’m about to say is my own personal experience. Currently I’m using 2 component Polyurethane based finishes. I like the quality of finish and the longevity of the finish. They are easy to apply with brush or spray and until now seem to last much longer then oil based varnish. Hi gloss varnish is extremely difficult to get perfect and looks terrible unless it is perfect, mat finish isn’t everyone’s cup of tea so I usually mix equal quantities of mat and gloss to get an eggshell type of finish. When applying I always thin the first coat by 50% to help it penetrate the wood. When reapplying varnish I am mindful of the amount of time between coats. If the previous coat it totally dry/cured then sanding is required to get a mechanical bond, if the previous coat is still soft or slightly tacky then the bond is chemical and no sanding required. 1 mistake i see some people make is to sand between coats using a high grit paper, this just polishes the previous surface and isn’t rough enough to get a mechanical bond. I won’t use a higher grit then 150 between coats. Another advantage of 2 component PU varnish/paint is that once fully cured you can sand with a high grit paper 1500-2000 grit and polish of you need a perfect finish. About 15 years ago a friend was building a steel ship and asked me to make all the windows for him from oak which I did, on completion I asked if he wanted me to varnish them and he did, he asked that I use oil based varnish and he wanted 12 coats applied. I laughed thinking he was joking but he wasn’t, he told me to try just 1 window and see the result so I did. Wow! After 9 coats the window looked amazing so I applied 12 coats to all of them. The main problem I have with brush on oil varnish is that it needs revarnishing quiet regularly and applying 12 coats is quiet time consuming and you can’t apply too many coats without through drying or it will become quiet orangepeely and look horrible. Chopping boards I make my own finish using board oil and beeswax, just melt the wax mix in the oil and ready to go. Nice finish but doesn’t last long before needing reapplying. I don’t like water based products and have very little experience with them. 🤷‍♂️ Hope this helps. 👍

Great question Elias, and tbh idk. The door was biscuit jointed, glued, and then riveted together, but Al's shoddy workmanship doesn't come with a guarantee! It'll undoubtedly warp and bow and turn into a complete nightmare being an outside door open to all the elements the UK weather has to offer. I'd ask Al to defend himself, but he's taken the cash and done a runner!
